Review of Death Of A Lobster Lover

32451963Synopsis:

Food and cocktails columnist Hayley Powell is off on a girls’ getaway with her two best friends. But soon they’ll have to get away from a killer

The quaint fishing village of Salmon Cove, Maine, seems like the ideal location for a girls’ weekend with Hayley’s gal pals, Liddy and Mona. Liddy’s on the rebound from a breakup, but when she meets a handsome tourist, it looks like a little romance might liven things up.

Unfortunately, Liddy’s new sweetheart is found dead on the beach the next morning at the town’s Lobster Bake, next to an overturned cooking pot. The liberated lobsters may be scrambling back to the sea, but Hayley’s not about to let a murderer escape so easily. To crack the case, she’ll need to blow the lid off some serious undercover activity–or risk becoming ensnared in a killer’s trap…

Includes seven delectable recipes from Hayley’s kitchen!

Praise for Death of a Bacon Heiress

“[A] fun mystery that will have readers enraptured.” —Kings River Life magazine (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Haley, Liddy and Mona are best friends from way back.  They have always had each other’s back, they know each other’s secrets and they are not afraid to call each other out if the need arises. The characters are quirky, eccentric and laugh out loud funny.  Sometimes I was surprised that they are even friends because of how much they bickerer.  Haley is the peacemaker, Mona is the eater and the instigator and Liddy is just a rather unpleasant woman.  After a while, I got tired of her being so selfish and self centered.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The authors are very talented in their descriptive writing and during much of the book, I felt like I was right there, watching all of the action taking place.  I really enjoyed the blog posts that were included at the end of some of the chapters.  It is a good way to get to learn more about Haley, in a fun way.

The mystery is carried on well throughout the book.  There were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through that it was almost impossible to figure out the culprit. And that is a good thing.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy.  This is a great series, and although I missed Haley’s family, I still liked the book.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.  I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Review of Taming Of The Tabby

Taming Of The Tabby

Whales and Tails, Book #12

Kathi Daley

5 Stars

35399600Synopsis:

A murder, a wedding, and a teenager in danger, all collide in this fast paced mystery set on magical Madrona Island. Cait is in a terrible accident resulting in a temporary loss of memory. She can remember the events leading up to the accident but cannot remember what occurred or how she came to be on a remote part of the island in the middle of the night. When she finds a dead body on the road which is there one minute and the gone the next she decides she must be losing her mind. Cait sets out to piece together the events surrounding the accident while Cody agrees to watch out for a teenager on the run in this fast paced cozy mystery. (Goodreads)

Review:

This book grabbed me from the first page and took me along for a tension filled ride.  The first chapter had mystery and suspension, wondering what was going to happen to Cait. Once that was resolved there was another mystery waiting in the wings right away.

The characters are well developed and well rounded.  Not only did we get to spend more time with Cait and Cody, we also got to spend time with Alyson, a character from another on series of this author, The Seacliff High Mystery series.  The author does a very good job of writing a crossover book that is entertaining..

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book I felt like I was right there, watching all of the action taking place.  The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.

I really like the paranormal aspects of this book.  Not only do we have Shadow, the mystical cat that has appeared to help Cait solve the mystery, but we also have Alyson, who happens to be able to see ghosts.  These two things combined made for a bit more paranormal than usual in this series, which I enjoyed.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  The author continues to write great books for her readers to enjoy.

First, it’s Granny’s neighbor Sally (who gives up the ghost in her weed-filled front yard), followed by Esmeralda Periwinkle (the squirrel lover on Main Street), and then, Mr. Nail, owner of the local hardware store (who is squashed when dozens of bags of fertilizer fall on top of him). Granny is baffled. Who is behind this murder spree?

Granny enlists the help of her sort of boyfriend franklin Gatsby, the town’s police chief Cornelius Stricknine (or “The Big Guy”), her reality-show loving neighbor Mavis, and her own son Thor. And, of course, the special assistance of her menagerie of pets — including Mr. Bleaty, the goat. Soon Granny is hot on the trail of this dastardly murderer. Unfortunately, when Granny herself is poisoned, everyone insists that she cool her crime solving ways and stay indoors and out of harms way. Of course, that’s never going to happen! Not when Granny knows all the secret passageways and tunnels that run underneath Fuchsia. Out she goes–and watch out, you evil doers! Granny will solve this mystery–you can bet your pink undies, she will!  (Goodreads)

Of course, Granny can always count on her many furry friends to provide her with moral support, but it’s quite possible that Granny—that is, Hermiony Vidalia Criony Fiddlestadt—has a secret or two of her own, which may very well be revealed as Granny Snows A Sneak.  (Goodreads)

“The authentically Southern Boyer writes with heart, insight, and a deep understanding of human nature.” – Hank Phillippi Ryan, Agatha Award-Winning Author of What You See

“Susan M. Boyer gets it. And by ‘it,’ I mean ‘the Southern voice.’ And by that I do not mean she throws ‘Y’all’ into every other line of her dialogue. I mean she understands deep down how Southern people talk and can replicate the cadence and music of that speech on the page as delicately as a master chef adding a last pinch of sea salt to a batch of Hollandaise sauce.” – CriminalElement.com

Review of Death Threads

Death Threads
A Southern Sewing Circle, Book #2
Elizabeth Lynn Casey
5 Stars

Death Threads (Southern Sewing Circle Mystery Book 2) by [Casey, Elizabeth Lynn]Synopsis:

The Southern Sewing Circle mystery series continues.

Yankee librarian Tori Sinclair is basking in the warmth of her new circle of friends from South Carolina’s Sweet Briar Ladies Society sewing circle. That is until local author Colby Calhoun reveals an unflattering secret about the town’s historic past-and then disappears, leaving a bloody trail behind him. And when Tori begins to see a pattern of the townsfolk’s age-old Southern pride standing in the way of justice, she knows it’s time to unravel the mystery. (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional. Tori and her group of sewing friends each have unique personalities and it is fun to listen to conversations that they have. I think my favorites of the group are Margaret Louise and Leona. Margaret Louise is the grandmother that we all wished we had (and some of us did). Leona, her twin, is always trying to flirt and be noticed by eligible men. They could not be more different, but you can tell that they love each other greatly. They are a great group of women to visit and hang out with.

The mystery in this book is not a murder, but rather a disappearance, that may have led to murder. It was refreshing that no one happened upon a dead body. I mean, how many dead bodies can show up in any given town? There were enough clues to sift through and red herrings thrown in that is was near impossible to figure out who the culprit was. And I will say, I had no idea who had done the deed, they were not even on my radar.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author creates a small town setting that seems realistic and inviting. The town folks are nosy, caring and honest to a fault. Although at times they have trouble handling the truth, they usually come around.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I am taking my time reading this series and I am enjoying it very much.
