Join Zoe and friends as they work together to solve a murder mystery and plan a festive celebration for Catherine’s first Easter.

Review:

When I was reading the first half of this book, I felt like I was watching a movie, such as Saw.  There was so much action contained within the pages and you could have cut the tension with a knife.  Zoe and her friends were under so much pressure to solve a variety of puzzles, clues and tasks, all the while being timed, to save Zak.  I could not stop reading, I had to keep swiping the pages to see what would happen next.

As usual, the characters are well rounded, well developed and three dimensional.  I love any time that I get to spend with Zoe and all of her friends. And add in Catherine and Eli, Zoe and Ellie’s babies, and the fun gets even better.  There is so much love and caring within that group and it is so refreshing. I feel that this author’s speciality is character creation and development and I feel like Zoe and her friends are my friends.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  As in most of this author’s books, there are two mysteries to solve, which makes it twice as fun being an armchair detective.

I highly recommend this book (and series) to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  Give this book a try, I know you will not be disappointed.

Synopsis:

Cut down among the flowers . . .

Britta Johnston might be a late bloomer, but after leaving her deadbeat husband and dead-end job, she’s finally pursuing her artistic passion at her aunt Elin’s floral boutique, Blooma, in Portland, Oregon. It’s on the banks of the Willamette, in a quaint district of cobblestone paths and cherry trees. The wine bar featuring Pacific Northwest vintages is a tasty bonus, offering another kind of bouquet to enjoy. But things aren’t as peaceful as they look.

For one thing, someone’s been leaving dead roses around–and a sleazy real estate developer who wants the waterfront property has put a big-money offer on the table. Then, after a contentious meeting of local business owners, he’s found on the floor of the shop, with Elin’s garden shears planted in his chest. And before the police decide to pin the crime on her beloved aunt, Britta will have to find out who arranged this murder . . .(Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  I enjoyed reading about the relationship between Britta and her aunt Elin.   You can tell that they love each other very much and are happy to be reunited again. Elin is a real wiz with flowers and Britta is happy to be working with flowers again.  Her life has taken a downward turn but she really wants to be happy again. It will be hard because she lost her confidence while she was married to her jerk of a husband, but she is determined to get it back.  When, shortly after she arrives in Portland, a dead body is found, she realizes that she has to find the culprit before her aunt is sent away permanently.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy way.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book, I felt like I was right there in Portland being part of the community.   Her descriptions of the flowers and creations that they made made me feel like I could smell them and see them in my mind’s eye. You can tell that the author knows a lot about flowers or she did a lot of research (I think she probably knows a lot about them).  I also liked the flower tips included at the end of the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  If you like vivid descriptions and enjoy flowers, you will want to read this story.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Synopsis:

Tex-Mex waitress and part-time reporter Josie Callahan serves up more Lone Star justice in this spicy mystery from the author of The Good, the Bad, and the Guacamole.

It’s fiesta time in Broken Boot, Texas, and tourists are pouring into town faster than free beer at a bull roping for the mouthwatering Cinco de Mayo festivities. Tex-Mex waitress Josie Callahan, her feisty abuela, and even her spunky Chihuahua Lenny are polishing their folklorico dances for Saturday’s big parade, while Uncle Eddie is adding his own spicy event to the fiesta menu: Broken Boot’s First Annual Charity Chili Cook-off.

But Uncle Eddie’s hopes of impressing the town council go up in smoke when cantankerous chili cook Lucky Straw is found dead in his tent. And when Josie’s beloved uncle is accused of fatal negligence, she, Lenny, and the steadfast Detective Lightfoot must uncover who ended the ambitious chilihead’s life–before another cook kicks the bucket. (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well developed and well rounded.  Josie is a smart caring person who has a feisty personality.  She is surrounded by family and loved ones and she loves them as much as they love her.  Maybe it is the reporter in her, but Josie has never met a mystery that she did not want to solve.  And when her uncle is a person of interest, she becomes determined to find the real culprit. There were quite a few characters in this book and at times I had a hard time keeping them straight in my mind.  This is only my opinion and others may not agree with me. Since this is the first book in the series that I have read, I would imagine it would have been easier if I had read the others. I really liked the feeling of familial love, caring and support that the author brought to all of the pages in this book.  And her dog, Lenny, is just adorable.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book I felt like I was right there, watching all of the action taking place and listening in on conversations.  The mystery was carried on well throughout the book and there were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through. There was enough action taking place that I happily kept swiping pages to see what would happen next.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I think for optimum enjoyment you want to read the other books in this series first, but again, that is only my opinion.  I plan on reading the first two soon.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Berkley Publishing Group, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

When did you know that you wanted to be an author?  What things, if any, influenced that decision?

I was going through a rough patch and had three children at home under my feet. I read so many romances they were coming out my ears. One day I looked at the book I was reading and said those famous words, I can write better than that. Little did I know how hard it is to write a good book and that the best writers make it look easy. I did my research, joined North Texas Romance Writers, and began learning about the craft of writing. I began writing my first book as a way of being creative without having to leave the house. Play It Loud is a sweet romance I wrote under the name Gina Lee Nelson for The Wild Rose Press. The inspiration for my hero was Josh Groban; and I chose New York City as my setting because I missed living and working in the Big Apple.

With so many cozies being written today, what makes your books stand out from the crowd?

You’re right! There are hundreds of cozies that are currently being written. I think my cuisine, Tex-Mex, and my locale, Far West Texas–otherwise known as Big Bend Country, are unique to cozy mysteries. The desert town of Broken Boot, Texas nestles at the foot of the Davis and Chisos mountains at the edge of the Chihuahua Desert. I can’t say that having a pet in my mysteries is unique—but at least Lenny, the Chihuahua in my stories, has long hair!

Do you work from an outline or plot or do you just see where the characters take you?

It’s not always just one thing or another. Sometimes I’ll start with the main characters and begin writing to discover more about the characters. I start with a very slim outline. After I begin to write, I add to the outline various scenes and plot twists.

Do you read your reviews?  Do you respond to them, good or bad?  Do you do anything special to get those reviews?

I read every single review when my first book in this series came out; maybe because it was my first mystery. After that initial release, I read reviews only the first few weeks after the second book was released. If I visit my social media or vendor pages and see new reviews, I’ll read a few. On Goodreads I’ll read most of the reviews and make sure to like the positive reviews. If readers take the time to comment on my posts on Facebook with positive comments, I respond back with a comment. I have found many negative reviews give me insight into how to write a better book. Not all, mind you, but many readers make valid points.

Writing is my second job as I’m sure it is for many writers. I’m fortunate to have a publicist at Berkley who organizes a blog tour for me. Many of those blog posts are reviews. I also reach out to writer friends who have a blog or a review site and request a review or a guest post.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Try harder. Dream bigger. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Forgive yourself.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in someone buying your book(s)?   Who designs your book covers?

I do think covers make a big difference. I know it makes a big difference to me as a reader. My covers are designed by cover artists contracted by Berkley.

Please give us an insight into your main characters.  What do you think makes them special?

Josie Callahan’s my girl! She’s gutsy, funny, brave, and able to put together clues like nobody’s business. She might come across a ditz in the beginning; but she’s very committed to protecting her family and friends. She’s had to overcome the adversity of being jilted at the altar and being laid off from her dream job without losing hope for a brighter future. These life-altering experiences may have brought her unexpectedly back home to the small town she left behind; but she’s not bitter.

A close second on the list would definitely be the quiet, thoughtful, and oh-so-handsome Detective Quint Lightfoot. I am a huge fan of Tony Hillerman’s Native American lawmen Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn, not to mention Native American actors Adam Beach and Michael Horse. When it came time to create a local deputy, I couldn’t resist introducing the handsome Detective Quint Lightfoot.

Um, I’m feeling guilty. I can’t not mention Josie’s erstwhile grandmother, Senora Mari, hard on the outside, marshmallow on the inside. She’s in charge of the kitchen at Milagro, the family restaurant, and a member of the local folklórico dance troupe. A real spitfire!

And what would Lenny, the long-haired Chihuahua, say if I left him out? He’s a big fan of tamales, Tejano music, and wearing his mariachi costume.

What have you learned about yourselves since becoming an author?

I’ve learned that I need to push myself to be a better writer. I’ve also learned that I can write longer books than I thought and make deadlines even when life interferes—which I realize is by the grace of God.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

I’m a full-time theatre teacher and a part-time author.

What do your plans for future projects include?

I’m a member of both Sisters in Crime and North Texas Romance Writers. My NTRWA chapter just released a free short story anthology on Smashwords entitled Lone Star Love. Man of Steel is a short story written under my real name Gina Lee Nelson. I’m also planning my next mystery series.

What do you think the hardest part of writing is?  What is the easiest?

Easiest? Hm. Editing is easiest for me. After I slap down that rough draft, I find the deeper layers of my characters—which leads to more interesting conflicts and scenes. Consistency is often the hardest thing for me because of my school schedule. Writing every day is important; but if I can’t do that, I set up a schedule and try to stick to it. When I’m consistent, I give the story its due.

What type of books do you like to read?  Who are some of your favorite authors?

I bounce around a bit. I’m currently reading A Clash of Kings by George Martin. Before that A Curious Beginning by Deanne Raybourn. I like to read Alan Bradley, Elizabeth George, and Louise Penny…

What is the one thing you would like your readers to know about you?

My childhood dream was to be a director. I fleshed that out in elementary school by writing the plays, casting the popular kids, and creating the performances for my friends and teachers to applaud. Fast forward several years and I’m still at it. My day job is corralling high school theatre students; my artistic outlet is creating characters in my own original stories; and my joy is encouraging my sons especially my actor/director middle child. Though I live in an urban area of Texas, my heart yearns for the beauty of Big Bend Country. That’s why I placed my story near Big Bend National Park in a town nestled between the Chisos and Davis Mountains and the Chihuahua Desert. It made the perfect excuse to do research in Alpine, Fort Davis, Stockton, and their weird cousin Marfa.

Do you have anything specific you would like to say to your readers?

A big thanks to all the mystery readers and writers who welcomed my first series, The Taste of Texas mysteries, with open arms. Josie, Lenny, Senora Mari, Detective Lightfoot, and I hope you’ve cracked a smile, chuckled a time or two, and enjoyed some delicious Tex-Mex recipes as we’ve cleaned up the dusty streets of Broken Boot, Texas.

If you missed Josie’s early exploits as an amateur sleuth, be sure to check out Here Today, Gone Tamale, Book 1, and The Good, the Bad, and the Guacamole, Book 2 in the series. Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Rebecca Adler grew up on the sugar beaches of the Florida Gulf Coast. Drawn to the Big Apple by the sweet smell of wishful thinking, she studied acting on Broadway until a dark-eyed cowboy flung her over his saddle and hightailed it to the Southwest.

Prior to writing women’s fiction, Gina always found a way to add a touch of the dramatic to her life: dinner theatre in Mississippi, can-can club in Florida, and playing a giant Furskin in the New York Toy Fair, plus the occasional play and musical.

She’s currently content to pour her melodramatic tendencies into writing her Taste of Texas culinary mystery series. Set in far West Texas, her humorous stories are filled with delicious suspense and scrumptious Tex-Mex recipes. Her alter ego, Gina Lee Nelson, writes sweet contemporary romances with a sweet, Southern-fried flavor.

To Die but Once: A Maisie Dobbs Novel by [Winspear, Jacqueline]Maisie Dobbs—one of the most complex and admirable characters in contemporary fiction (Richmond Times Dispatch)—faces danger and intrigue on the home front during World War II.

As news of the plight of thousands of soldiers stranded on the beaches of France is gradually revealed to the general public, and the threat of invasion rises, another young man beloved by Maisie makes a terrible decision that will change his life forever.

Maisie’s investigation leads her from the countryside of rural Hampshire to the web of wartime opportunism exploited by one of the London underworld’s most powerful men, in a case that serves as a reminder of the inextricable link between money and war. Yet when a final confrontation approaches, she must acknowledge the potential cost to her future—and the risk of destroying a dream she wants very much to become reality.  (Amazon)

On the day of the cruise, the departure city is enflamed with massive protests, counter-protests, and violence on both sides. When one of the ship’s passengers is found dead that evening, Jacob is faced with an even more urgent question: Was Chomp himself behind the murder, or was it one of his desperate political enemies? The search for the truth will take Jacob and his mother off the ship and into the dangerous tropical landscape of the cruiseline’s private island, where Chomp and his supporters will finally reveal what they’ve been planning all along.

A Cast of Killers (Hubbert & Lil Cozy Mystery Series Book 2) by [Gray, Gallagher]A MYSTERIOUS GROUP OF ELDERLY ACTRESSES—WITH SECRETS TO KILL FOR…

In Gallagher Gray’s SECOND cozy Hubbert and Lil mystery, stalwart amateur sleuth Theodore Hubbert and his trusty sidekick Aunt Lil take on a scrappy should-be-retired troupe of ex-actresses, who—surprise, surprise—aren’t at all what they seem….

Quirky investigator Theodore Hubbert—T.S. for short—is awakened out of his regular afternoon revelry (watching his favorite soap opera) by a phone call from none other than his Aunt Lil, whose penchant for interrupting… well, really anything T.S. is interested in, is uncanny. As per usual, Aunt Lil is calling to ask for a tiny little favor—a helping hand at a Manhattan soup kitchen. Naturally, T.S. wasn’t listening to her beggar’s soliloquy and unwittingly agrees to work that afternoon’s shift. But T.S.’s afternoon turns out to have more in store than ladling soup. Because no good deed goes unpunished—especially when Aunt Lil is involved.

In the middle of lunch—an inventive chili recipe Lil proudly boosted from a real life cowboy in Santa Fe—a little old lady suddenly jumps up, clutching at her throat… and drops dead. New York’s Finest couldn’t care less about the demise of an elderly woman who presumably had a heart attack. But a group of soup kitchen regulars—a crew of snooty failed actresses from the Eisenhower era—appear shaken. Turns out they knew the deceased. And their woeful reactions are dramatic, to say the least. But are they just acting?

Ever unable to keep her mouth shut, Aunt Lil offers up the shocked and (seemingly) grief-stricken actresses her nephew’s private investigator services to investigate the woman’s real identity. Reluctantly, T.S. agrees to help. After all, he dryly muses, it’s not like she was murdered. Famous last words.

Throughout this irresistibly cozy mystery, Aunt Lil’s tall tales sprinkle about as comic relief to a thoroughly engaging murder mystery. And true to form, she remains a nosey pest—who happens to be utterly adorable. And T.S.’s antics, reminiscent of Columbo or Agatha Christie’s finicky Hercule Poirot, will delight the fervent mystery fans.  (Amazon)

Paul Spencer has just about had it with Latimer’s incompetence and wilful time-wasting. Spencer knows for a fact that he is the cog that keeps NeO-aD rolling and wishes that Barraclough would take a stance and get Latimer out of the way.

And Barraclough? He just wants to do his job without the constant bickering of his two insufferable colleagues.

When a new client (approached by Latimer, he might add) presents an opportunity for the company to hit it big, Latimer contemplates taking matters into his own hands. He hasn’t considered, however, that Spencer and Barraclough might have plans of their own…(Amazon)

Review:

I had been looking forward to reading this book since I first heard about it.  I have to say that is was well worth the wait.

The characters are well developed and well rounded.  Hope is a smart, hardworking woman who is trying to make her own place in the blogging world.  When a body is found at a garden party that she is attending, she feels compelled to try to find the killer before her sister ends up in jail.  I really enjoyed reading about the relationship between Hope and her sister. It seemed realistic and added a lot to the story. I will say that there were a lot of characters introduced in this story and I had trouble keeping them straight in my mind at times. That is only my opinion and others may not feel the same way. The farther I read in the book it did get easier to keep track of everyone.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  I think that the author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I could imagine many of the scenes in my mind, which drew me into the story even more.

The mystery was well plotted and it was not easy to solve.  There were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through.  Add in the twists and turns and red herrings and even the most seasoned armchair detective will have trouble solving it.

I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I will happily read the next book when it is published.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

New Releases For The Week Of March 25th, 2018–Part 1

Here is a list of some of the new releases for the week of March 25th, 2018.  I am going to divide the list into 3 days because there are so very many of them this week. Today is first  day of my list.  Hope you find some selections for your weekly reading.  Enjoy and happy reading.

The Bengal Identity (A Cat Groomer Mystery) by [Watkins, Eileen]Everyone knows a leopard can’t change its spots. But can a thief hide the spots on a catnapped Bengal? Groomer Cassie McGlone is about to find out . . .

With no ID for his pet, an agitated young man shows up at Cassie’s Comfy Cats claiming his house has burned down and he needs to board his big, brown cat, Ayesha. But after a bath washes dye out of the cat’s coat and reveals beautiful spots, Cassie suspects the exotic-looking feline may in fact be a valuable Bengal show cat, possibly stolen. At the same time, there are rumored sightings of a “wild cat” in the hills of Chadwick, New Jersey. Could there be a connection?

When Ayesha’s alleged owner turns up dead, it looks like whoever wants the beautiful Bengal is not pussyfooting around. Working with the police, Cassie and her staff need to be careful not to reveal the purloined purebred’s whereabouts while they discreetly make inquiries to cat breeders to find her real owners.  But after a break-in attempt rattles Cassie’s cage, it’s clear someone let the cat out of the bag. And when a second body is found, it’s up to Cassie to spot the killer, who may be grooming her to be the next victim . . .

Praise for The Persian Always Meows Twice

“A delightful debut mystery. It’s smart, well-plotted, and features a cast of characters—both human and feline—that I want to see more of. This book will be catnip for cat lovers.”

“The purr-fecf mystery to curl up with for a lovely cozy read, preferably with a cup of tea, cuddly cat optional but recommended.”—Leslie Meier, author of Turkey Trot Murder  (Amazon)

Synopsis:

On the way to the emergency room, an elderly woman regains consciousness long enough to inform paramedic Zoe Chambers that her fall down the basement steps was no accident. Before she can say more, she succumbs to her injuries, launching Zoe and Police Chief Pete Adams into the investigation of a burglary ring targeting the area’s vulnerable senior citizens.

Zoe—in spite of Pete’s objections—takes it upon herself to act as protection detail after the con men, disguised as water company employees, set their sights on Zoe’s beloved former landlady. It’s a decision that eventually puts Zoe in harm’s way.

With Zoe already recovering from one close call, Pete must race against time to stop the crime ring—and a dangerous killer—before they strike again.   (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional.  I think that Zoe and Pete are some of my all time favorite characters. Individually they are both loyal, tough, caring and hard working.  As a couple they are loving, unsure and totally devoted to each other. But they also have problems like everyone else. They have family problems that they try to tackle together and they can be stubborn to a fault.  I just love Pete’s father, Harry. He reminds me so much of my own father and it was bittersweet reading about him and his problems.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  I felt the style of writing allowed my to get a very clear picture of the characters from their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I felt like I was right there, watching the snow swirl around and watching all of the action taking place.

The mystery was well plotted and carried on well throughout the whole book.  There were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through. The mystery was not an easy one to solve and I was surprised who the culprit was.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  With fantastic characters, a realistic setting and a top notch mystery, there is not one thing I would change about this book.  The whole series is not-to-be-missed.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Henery Press, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
