Security officer MJ Murphy and her assistant, Bradley Gros, face many other obstacles while investigating the murder, including the Chief Security Officer, who is quick to criticize their efforts; Regal Cruise Lines, which has already suffered too much bad press; the Copenhagen-based FBI agent, who is looking to exert his authority and has little patience for what he feels is the work of amateurs; and especially the witnesses, most of whom hated the victim and are reluctant to assist in a search for his killer.

And even when the mystery is finally solved, MJ Murphy’s goals in achieving justice may prove to be somewhat different than those of the FBI.  (Amazon)

The Halloween House (A Tess and Tilly Cozy Mystery Book 4) by [Daley, Kathi]Every town has one. The big old house which has stood empty for so long that no one really remembers anyone living there. The iconic subject of lore and folktales which hints at supernatural occurrences, tragedy, and family curses, that can be neither confirmed nor denied. For the town of White Eagle Montana the house that served as the subject of ghostly stories by the campfire was a huge old mansion built more than fifty years ago by a wealthy industrialist as a summer home for his wife and five children. The house, void of love and laughter, served as a sort of luxury prison far away from the hustle and bustle of Hartford Harrington’s full and busy life in San Francisco.

Structurally, Harrington House had weathered the long winters and hot summers of northern Montana. It had endured long after every one of those five children had been buried in the little family cemetery at the edge of the huge estate. I’m really not sure why the place was never sold, or even lived in, by whichever Harrington relation inherited the place, but after the summer Houston Harrington jumped from the third floor window to the concrete bricks of the veranda below, not a single Harrington or Harrington heir had set foot in the place.

Until now.

When Jordan Westlake inherits the house from his mother, he decides to break tradition and take up residence. He expected that the renovation on the old mansion would be an expensive and time consuming endeavor, what he didn’t expect to find was a skeleton in his closet. Literally.  (Amazon)

Review of Italian Iced

Italian Iced

Ethnic Eats, Book #3

Kylie Logan

5 Stars

Hot pasta and a cold corpse make for quite a combination in the latest book in the Ethnic Eats mystery series.

When Laurel Inwood features Italian cuisine on the Terminal at the Tracks menu, she knows she’ll need to stock the shelves, the fridge, and the freezer with plenty of wonderful delicacies. She just never expected one of them to be her old boss, Hollywood superstar Meghan Cohan.

But one day when Laurel is at the restaurant early to get ready for the regular rush of customers, that’s exactly what she finds–Meghan dead in the Terminal freezer.

What’s a Hollywood A-lister doing in Hubbard, Ohio?

For Laurel, that’s the real question, because the first question she’d ask in any other murder investigation–who would want the victim dead?–seems pretty much a no-brainer in this case.

Who would want Meghan dead?

Just about anybody who had ever met her. (Goodreads)

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  I really enjoy Laurel, she is gutsy, smart and determined.  She is not easily fooled and she sure is not a pushover. But she also has a softer caring side.  She seemed multifaceted to me and very real. I enjoyed spending time with her work “family” and especially her “not aunt” Sophie, you can really tell that they care about and love each other very much. And Declan is a wonderful boyfriend and Laurel better not let him get away. But with her past of growing up in foster homes, she has trouble believing in happily-ever-after.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  It helped me get into the flow of the story and kept me there the entire time.  The author is very talented in her descriptive and through much of the book I felt like I was right there, smelling the foods and listening in on conversations.  The author does a great job of describing the dishes being served without turning the book into a cookbook. And the couple of recipes at the back of the book sound delicious.

The mystery is well plotted and is not easy to solve.  With so many suspects that disliked the deceased and lots of clues to sift through, I had a difficult time trying to solve this mystery.  Throw in some twists and turns and red herrings and I was not sure of the culprit’s identity until it was revealed. Which is just how I like my mysteries.

I would highly recommend this book, and series, to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  To me, this book is exactly what a cozy should be. Check it out and I bet you will agree.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Berkley Publishing Group, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Review of The Advice Column Murders

The Advice Column Murders

Oakwood Mystery, Book #3

Leslie Nagel

5 Stars

What’s the couple next door really hiding? Vintage fashionista and amateur sleuth Charley Carpenter finds out in this engrossing cozy mystery from the USA Today bestselling author of The Book Club Murders.

In a small town like Oakwood, Ohio, everyone knows everyone else’s business—except for Charley Carpenter’s standoffish new neighbors, who tend to keep to themselves. But behind closed doors, Paxton Sharpe’s habit of screaming bloody murder at all hours of the day keeps Charley awake all night. Coupled with the stress of the increasingly delayed expansion of her shop, Old Hat Vintage Fashions, the insomnia is driving Charley crazy. Her only distraction? The local paper’s irreverent new advice column, “Ask Jackie.”

Jackie’s biting commentary usually leaves Charley and her employees rolling on the floor, but her latest column is no laughing matter. An oddly phrased query hinting at a child in peril immediately puts Charley on high alert. After arriving home to a bloodcurdling scream next door, she follows the noise into the basement and makes a grisly discovery: the body of Judith Sharpe’s adult daughter.

With Detective Marcus Trenault off in Chicago, Charley decides to take matters into her own hands. Convinced that the murder is connected to the desperate plea for help in “Ask Jackie,” she embarks on a twisted investigation that has her keeping up with the Sharpes—before a killer strikes again. (Goodreads)

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  I enjoyed getting to spend time with Charley, her best friend Frankie and her detective boyfriend Marc.  Charley is smart, hardworking and can get feisty at times. When there is a murder next door, Charley knows she has to do what she can to help find the killer.  And she will not give up until she does just that. The secondary characters add a lot to the story and I really love the relationship between Charley and her dad.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  I felt that the writing style let me know the characters a little better through their actions and words.  The author is very talented in creating suspense from just the written word. I found myself swiping pages as fast as I could to see what was going to happen next.  This book is a little edgier than most cozies I read with a little more language but that did not bother me at all. I thought that the mystery was well paced and well developed.  There were enough clue to sift through and suspects to consider and solving the mystery was not easy at all.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy.  I have read all three books in this series and I have loved them all. I cannot wait for the next book.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Random House Publishing Group-Alibi, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate

Review of Portrait Of A Sister

Portrait Of a Sister

Laura Bradford

5 Stars

Katie Beiler was always the follower to her twin sister Hannah’s lead. That is until Hannah left their Amish upbringing for an English life—leaving Katie to find her own footing in a world that no longer looks as it once did . . .

Katie has always imagined her life being just like Mamm’s. It’s why she chose baptism and why she’ll soon marry Abram Zook. But ever since Hannah left, the only thing that truly makes Katie smile is the sketchpad in which she indulges her talent for drawing faces—a sin that, if discovered, could get her shunned by her family, her friends, and even Abram. Yet Katie sees her secret pastime as the only way to quiet a growing restlessness she’d just as soon ignore. That is until their Mamm’s untimely death brings Hannah back home to Pennsylvania, with a new outlook on life, a man she adores, and, soon, an invitation for Katie to visit her in New York City.

Suddenly, Katie is experiencing a freedom she’s never had, in a world she never imagined. She’s also spending time in the company of a fellow dreamer, someone who sees her as strong and brave and makes her laugh. But it’s when Hannah shows Katie’s drawings to a gallery owner that she truly finds herself at a crossroads between the only life she’s ever known and the powerful lure of an unfamiliar future. (Goodreads)

When I read this book, I went through a vast variety of emotions.  I had tears (right from the start), I laughed, I got mad, I felt happy…  It has been a while since I read a book that had me feeling so many emotions, and I think it takes a very special author to accomplish this.

The characters are well developed and well rounded.  Although Katie and Hannah are twins, they could not be more different.  Katie has chosen the Amish life, Hannah has left and moved to New York to start a new life.  After their mamm dies, Katie is at a loss. She does not feel prepared to take over caring for everyone.  But she promised her mamm she would, so that is what she plans to do. When Hannah comes home for the funeral, Katie realizes how different their lives are.  She has always felt like she lived in the shadow of her twin and never felt she was as strong as Hannah. The one thing that she has that was all hers is her drawings.  When she is drawing, she feels alive and confident. But her drawings are a sin and something that could get her shunned. Katie has some decisions to make about what she is going to do with her life.

This book is about choices that have to be made in life.  Some choices are right, some are wrong, but they all need to be made in the course of one’s life.  Some are easy to make, some are very tough, some have very little effect and some are life changing.   The best we can hope for is that the right choices are made.

I would highly recommend  this book to anyone who enjoys a well written women’s contemporary.  The author is very talented in writing about the Amish way of life, and she has written a book that is heartwarming and heartbreaking.  Pick up this book, you will not be sorry.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Aunt Dimity and The King's Ransom by [Atherton, Nancy]In the 23rd installment of the bestselling Aunt Dimity series, a dark and stormy night kicks off a ghost chase in rural England

On a dull and dreary October day, Lori Shepherd and her husband Bill set off for the historic town of Rye, on the southeast coast of England, for a quiet weekend together without the kids. Bill must first pay a visit to a reclusive client–but after Lori drops him off, a powerful storm drives her off course and leaves her stranded in an ancient, rambling inn called The King’s Ransom. When Lori is spooked by ghostly noises in the night, Aunt Dimity reminds her rather tartly that not all ghosts intend to harm the living.

But the longer Lori is stuck at the inn, the stranger things seem. She learns that the inn was once a hangout for smugglers, and that it’s riddled with secret tunnels the smugglers used to reach a network of hidden caves. Then there’s the inn’s cook–a brawny, gruff ex-con–who seems to have a beef with a mysterious French guest. Are the noises Lori hears made by the spirits of long dead smugglers? Or should she be more worried by the inn’s living inhabitants? Joining forces with her new friend Bishop Wyndham, and guided by Aunt Dimity’s wise counsel, Lori sets out to discover once and for all who–or what–is haunting The King’s Ransom.  (Amazon)

As a reporter for the Battle Lake Recall, Mira James is roped into writing up the word war. But the festive mood sours when a well-known Glokkmann-bashing blogger is found dead . . . and the congresswoman herself meets a gruesome fate.

To keep the heat off her best friend’s fiancé–an ex-con reporter–Mira wades through the candidates’ dirty laundry, their unsavory secrets, and some murderous mudslinging to expose the killer.

Part of a ten-book series, October Fest is perfect for readers who love to escape into the humorous mysteries of Amy Vansant, Sarah Strohmeyer, Janet Evanovich, Denise Grover Swank, Margaret Lashley, Carl Hiaasen, Chelsea Field, and Stephanie Bond. The fun, escapist, culinary Mira James mysteries will leave you guessing―and laughing―until the very last page.

The Case of the Salubrious Soft Coated Wheaten (The Thousand Islands Doggy Inn Mysteries Book 19) by [Snow, B.R.]It’s wedding week and big changes are in the air.

And since change has never been one of Suzy’s strong points, she’s on edge and often grumpy until Josie and Chef Claire sit her down for a little chat. One of the major changes, apart from those her upcoming nuptials will create, is the fact that Chef Claire and Josie are moving down the street into a new house.

Just when it appears that Suzy has dealt with her moodiness and melancholy, during the moving process, they discover the body of the ninety-two-year-old man Josie bought the house from. At first, Charlie Merrihew’s death appears accidental, but when Suzy and Chief Abrams start piecing things together, it soon becomes apparent the old man, an avid collector of antiquities and war memorabilia, was murdered.

Suzy and the Chief flounder at first given the apparent lack of a motive. But when an antique, priceless dagger is discovered, along with the old man’s will, the list of suspects grows in a hurry. Charlie’s two kids, both childhood friends of Suzy, are in town for her wedding, and many others from the Merrihew clan are also in Clay Bay for a family gettogether. There’s no love lost between most of them and their contempt for Charlie was strong. As such, there is no shortage of suspects, including Suzy’s lifelong friends, a possibility that threatens to send her into another tailspin. The investigation continues as the wedding creeps closer and Suzy does everything she can to balance both without sending her mother into orbit.

The Case of the Salubrious Soft Coated Wheaton is the most emotional series installment to date, and by the time readers finish, they will have been taken on a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows as Suzy and the rest of the Clay Bay gang are confronted with a stark reminder: When it comes to life, there are no dress rehearsals.  (Amazon)

Bend the Rules (Big Mike and Minnie Book 2) by [Kelly, Susan Amanda]A high-octane cocktail of romance, crime and humor.

Everyone deserves a second chance and Mary Holmes, accountant extraordinaire, is determined to make the most of hers. Sure, she’d love to get her old life back – she used to be thin, well-dressed, engaged-to-be-married, on the corporate ladder and regularly bought three kinds of lettuce. Back then, she could afford the hair products needed to keep her hair sleek. But one unused wedding cake, a regrettable public safety incident and a teensy prison record later, her life goals have shrunk to being able to afford to eat regularly. To do that, she needs to make a success of her second chance… an accounting job with Vetruvious Security.

Everything is proceeding according to Mary’s detailed, color-coded, new-life plan until Vetruvious Security hires a specialist, Crash Coolidge, to work undercover to smash a truck cargo heist ring. Crash is sexy, insolent, sexy, disheveled, sexy and scarily relaxed about the prospect of killing people. Even in a tough-guy company like Vetruvious Security, Crash is the equivalent of a Rottweiler surrounded by Chihuahuas. After Mary is assigned to his team, her life-plan rapidly derails. She is targeted by the sinister and mysterious head of the heist gang and only Crash stands between her and an undignified death.

Mary finds herself doing things that most definitely were not in her employment contract like stripping the shoes from a corpse; adopting a deaf, rank-smelling guard dog; clue-hunting with Crash’s crazy, supermodel sister and lurking in a biker bar to locate a specific tattoo artist. All because Mary ends up wanting a second chance for Crash Coolidge as much as she wants one for herself. And she must find the sinister and mysterious head of the heist gang before Crash does. Because she doesn’t want Crash to do something reckless that lands him in prison. Not when he has become a vital part of her detailed, color-coded, new new-life plan.  (Amazon)
