Review of Death Said The Gypsy Queen

Death Said The Gypsy Queen
A Lily Gayle Lambert Mystery, Book #4
Susan Boles
5 Stars

“Beware the sign of the vampire blood,” said the fortune teller. “It brings madness and turmoil.”

Lily Gayle knows what that means, but, for the life of her, can’t figure out how the fortune teller does.

A quick road trip with Dixie. An unplanned stop at a roadside park. And, an hour later a dead body. Lily

Gayle, Dixie and Miss Edna find themselves knee deep in another homicide investigation when the local vet assistant turns up dead behind an outbuilding at the farmers market.

Lily Gayle believes the words of the fortune teller will have a major impact on the investigation but can’t bring herself to tell the other ladies.

To reveal what she believes the words mean might bring trouble to another old friend. And would betray a trust. Only Ben knows and he, as usual, advises Lily Gayle to stay out of his investigation – which she isn’t about to do.

When the secret is revealed, the townspeople go mad and the fortune tellers words come true. Can Lily Gayle, Dixie and Miss Edna solve the murder before more people are harmed?

The characters are well developed and well rounded. I really enjoy the time I get to spend with Lily Gayle, Dixie and Miss Edna. Lily Gayle and Dixie are best friends and you can tell how much they care about each other. And Miss Edna adds some humor to the story. The characters all have southern charm and the gossip gene.

The writing style flows smoothly and defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. I love the southern community that the author has created and I would love to go there for a visit. I thought that the mystery was well plotted and had enough cluse to sift through and suspects to consider. I kept swiping the pages as fast as I could to see what was going to happen next and who the culprit was.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted mystery. If you like engaging characters, humor, a great southern setting and a perplexing mystery, then grab this book (and series)

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

And when a judge for the Miss Pelican Mardi Gras Gumbo Queen pageant is shot, Maggie’s convinced the murder is connected to the body on the bayou. Does someone covet the pageant queen crown enough to kill for it? Could the deaths be related to the Orphan Train, which delivered its last charges to Louisiana in 1929? -Of the first three books, this one is the “squirmiest.” The first chapter, in particular, ends viscerally. Just a note to the reader.

-Disaster City is a real place. While the training scene that takes place there is different from training that normally occurs there, I have trained in Disaster City with my cadaver dog.

-I learned about the form of brujo’s curse used in the book during research I was doing into curanderismo.
