Miss Julia Takes the Wheel by [Ross, Ann B.]The delightful new installment of the beloved and New York Times bestselling Miss Julia series

When Miss Julia’s regular doctor goes on vacation with his wife, leaving a replacement in his stead, Miss Julia is immediately concerned. Never one to miss an opportunity to entertain–or size up–a newcomer, she invites the charming Dr. Don Crawford, and his painfully shy wife, Lauren, to dinner. While Miss Julia and Sam both note Lauren’s obvious lack of social skills, it’s her friends Hazel Marie and Binkie that pick up on some of Dr. Crawford’s less palatable qualities.

Meanwhile, Lloyd has gotten his first car, and LuAnne, fresh off her divorce, has started a job at the local funeral home and is in urgent need of an occupation-appropriate makeover–Miss Julia has enough on her plate. Yet there is just something she can’t place about the Crawfords, and she won’t rest until she gets to the bottom of it.

As always, hijinks ensue as Ann B. Ross delivers this delightful and entertaining installment, Miss Julia Takes the Wheel, in her bestselling Miss Julia series.  (Amazon)

Only the Quiet (A Death Gate Grim Reapers Thriller Book 2) by [Lee, Amanda M.]  Izzy Sage is settling into her new life despite the pall hanging over her past.
While the memories of the catastrophe that took her parents when she was a child remain elusive, she finds she’s comfortable in her new environment … even though she happens to have taken up the same position her father held when he was killed.
She’s the new death gate operator, which means she’s in control when souls are ferried to the other side. She literally controls death … and it’s not a comfortable spot to be in.
Her only problem is a man … and it’s not something she thought she would be facing because romance was supposed to be off the table.
Braden Grimlock isn’t exactly known for being mature and grounded, but there’s something about Izzy that calls to him. He can’t stay away. The feeling only grows stronger when a group of deaf students tour the aquarium located on top of the death gate … and the teacher drops dead in the middle of a blackout.
Right away, Izzy senses something is wrong … other than the obvious, that is. She simply can’t figure out what sort of opponent she’s facing.
The past is about to meet the present as a long-hidden secret grabs Izzy by the throat and demands answers. There’s a malevolent spirit on the loose and he has designs on escape from Belle Isle. The havoc he could wreak if freed is immeasurable.
It’s up to Izzy and Braden … and the rest of the Grimlocks … to figure out what’s happening and stop a horrifically determined ghost from claiming an innocent life. It’s going to take all of them working together … and if a little romance gums up the works, they’re simply going to have to deal with that, too.

What if you discovered your lively new friend wasn’t really…alive?

Amanda Tucker is excited about opening her fashion design studio in Shops On Main, a charming old building in historic Abingdon, Virginia. She didn’t realize a ghost came with the property! But soon Maxine “Max” Englebright, a young woman who died in 1930, isn’t the only dead person at the retail complex. Mark Tinsley, a web designer with a know-it-all attitude who also rented space at Shops On Main, is shot in his office.

Amanda is afraid that one of her new “friends” and fellow small business owners is his killer, and Max is encouraging her to solve Mark’s murder a la Nancy Drew. Easy for Max to want to investigate–the ghostly fashionista can’t end up the killer’s next victim!

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Amanda is hardworking, trustworthy and very talented in fashion design.  It is no wonder that she decides to open a fashion design studio. Max is a ghost who happens to reside where Amanda opened her shop.  Max is funny, quirky and sweet and she added so much to this story. I really like paranormal cozies so Max makes the book extra special.  And I thought that Grandpa Dave was wonderful and I thought the relationship between him and Amanda was very special.

The mystery was well plotted and carried on well throughout the book.  There were enough clues to sift through and a couple of very questionable suspects.  There were also some surprising twists and turns that I really enjoyed.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through her words I could picture the clothing being designed and the stores in Shops on Main.  The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  And if you like a bit of paranormal with your cozies, like I do, then you have to check this book out.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Grace Abraham Publishing, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Gayle Leeson is a pseudonym for Gayle Trent. Gayle has also written as Amanda Lee and Gayle Trent. As Amanda Lee, she wrote the Embroidery Mystery series, and as Gayle Trent, she writes the Daphne Martin Cake Mystery series and the Myrtle Crumb Mystery series. She has a series of women’s fiction novellas set in a shopping mall that has been converted to include micro-apartments (the Kinsey Falls series) and has just begun this new cozy series, the Ghostly Fashionista Mystery series. Another Down South Cafe novel is slated for release in August with book two in the Ghostly Fashionista series scheduled for October.

There’s a lot of noir surrounding this rare pinot.

As the vineyards in Seneca Lake, New York, prepare for the seasonal “Deck the Halls Around the Lake” festivities, someone is determined to keep pinot noir off the wine list. Hijacked trucks and sabotaged ingredients have made it a hard-to-acquire vintage for the six local wineries—including Norrie Ellington’s Two Witches Winery.

The case of the stolen and spoiled wines gets stranger when Arnold Mowen, owner of the company distributing the wine, is found dead, the apparent victim of a hunting accident. As Norrie tries to find the connections between the pinot’s problems and Arnold’s death, she uncovers a conspiracy among many locals whose hatred for the wine distributor was bottled up for far too long . . .

Ann I. Goldfarb

New York native Ann I. Goldfarb spent most of her life in education, first as a classroom teacher and later as a middle school principal and professional staff developer. Writing as J. C. Eaton, along with her husband, James Clapp, she has authored the Sophie Kimball Mysteries (Kensington) set for release in June 2017. In addition, Ann has nine published YA time travel mysteries under her own name. Visit the websites at www.jceatonauthor.com and www.timetravelmysteries.com

James E. Clapp

When James E. Clapp retired as the tasting room manager for a large upstate New York winery, he never imagined he’d be co-authoring cozy mysteries with his wife, Ann I. Goldfarb. His first novel, Booked 4 Murder (Kensington) is set for release in June 2017. Non-fiction in the form of informational brochures and workshop materials treating the winery industry were his forte along with an extensive background and experience in construction that started with his service in the U.S. Navy and included vocational school classroom teaching.

When did you know that you wanted to be an author?  What things, if any, influenced that decision?

While Ann always enjoyed writing, it was a new venture for Jim. Ann had written articles for trade magazines as well as a number of YA time travel mysteries (http://www.timetravelmysteries.com) when Jim approached her about collaborating on a cozy mystery. He thought it would be a fun venture and they decided to use their own retirement community of Sun City West as the playground for murder. Both of them were influenced by the books they read and the opportunities they’ve had to meet with other authors.

With so many cozies being written today, what makes your books stand out from the crowd?

Our Sophie Kimball series has an older sleuth (forty-something) solving murders in a senior retirement community. We’ve been able to introduce a number of quirky characters and an abundance of hyperbole to make our books stand out. Humor is key in all of our novels.

We have younger sleuths in our Wine Trail Mysteries and our Marcie Rayner detective series, but both of those are humorous as well.

Do you work from an outline or plot or do you just see where the characters take you?

We do both. We usually come up with a general plot outline and keep revising it. We are definitely “pantsers” since we work by the seat of our pants. Recently, we learned of a new term for writing – Plantsers. It combines plotters and pantsers and it seems to fit us.

Image result for flying by the seat of your pants clipart

Do you read your reviews?  Do you respond to them, good or bad?  Do you do anything special to get those reviews?

Yes, we do read our reviews and we appreciate readers taking the time to provide other readers with their feedback. Most reviews give us kudos as well as constructive criticism but some are mean-spirited and those really hurt.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Travel more and see the world. There’s nothing like experience.

Image result for travel clipart

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in someone buying your book(s)?   Who designs your book covers?

Covers play a major role in someone selecting our books to read or purchase. Our publisher, Kensington, designs the covers for our Sophie Kimball and Wine Trail mysteries. We couldn’t ask for a better art department.  Those covers are eye-catching and well thought out.

Our newest series with Camel Publishing, the Marcie Rayner detective series, has an impressive cover as well.

What have you learned about yourselves since becoming an author?

We’ve learned that we’ve got so much more to learn! We’ve also learned to ask other authors for advice but to trust our own instincts.

Image result for trust your instinct clipart

Do you write full-time or part-time?

We write whenever we can. We have to be flexible since we have busy schedules.

What do your plans for future projects include?

Continuing to juggle the three series we have – Sophie Kimball Mysteries (Kensington), The Wine Trail Mysteries (Kensington’s Lyrical Underground), and the Marcie Rayner detective series, (Camel Publishing).

What do you think the hardest part of writing is?  What is the easiest?

The hardest part is reading what we’ve written and analyzing it. The most tedious part is editing. The easiest is coming up with ideas.

Image result for ideas clipart

What type of books do you like to read?  Who are some of your favorite authors?

Ann – cozy mysteries, gothic mysteries, horror, historical fiction

Ann loves Nancy Atherton, Amy Reade, Kate Morton, Joe Hill, Charles Dickens

Jim – thriller, mystery, non-fiction, cozy mysteries

Jim loves Tom Clancy, P.J. Parrish, Robert B. Parker, and Clive Cussler (and he likes Nancy Atherton, too!)

What is the one thing you would like your readers to know about you?

We are always open to reader questions and comments and absolutely love meeting you at book signings and conferences.  We’ll be at Malice Domestic in Bethesda, Maryland, this May. Hope our readers can make it.

Image result for malice domestic clipart

Do you have anything specific you would like to say to your readers?

Yes!

Thank you so much for bringing our cozy mysteries into your life. We hope we’re putting a smile on your faces.

The movie industry spreading across Georgia has finally made its way to the little foothill village of Adairsville. Bookseller and police chaplain, Davis Morgan along with a young female clerk discover the body of a member of the movie company on a historic site at the foot of a large oak tree. Davis, despite his promise to his wife, cannot resist investigating the mystery. He and his young pal, policeman Charley Nelson, quietly dig into the case even though it is officially under the jurisdiction of the county sheriff. There is no shortage of suspects: the mysterious red headed man, sister of the victim, the fiancée and others. During the investigation an already troubled Charley is framed for a drug crime, and Davis receives word that an old enemy is on his way to Georgia after escaping from prison to make good on a threat against him. About the Authors

Danny & Wanda Pelfrey are a husband/wife team who in the past wrote helpful non-fiction books and material. Recently they have turned to producing “mysteries with a message.” Their stories are usually set in a small southern town in Georgia called Adairsville. Danny grew up in a poverty situation where he was often without access to TV for entertainment so he found books. It was not unusual for him, in his high school years, to read three or four books a week. So his love affair with books developed early. Review of Canyons, Caravans & Cadavers

Canyons, Caravans & Cadavers

A Camper & Criminals Cozy, Book #6

Tonya Kappes

5 Stars

43723368Synopsis:

Welcome to Normal, Kentucky~ where nothing is normal. A Campers and Criminal Mystery Series is another brainchild of USA Today Bestselling Author Tonya Kappes. If you love her quirky southern characters and small town charm with a mystery to solve, you’re going to love her new cozy mystery series!

When the principal of Normal High School asks Mae West to teach a semester on small town economics, since she helped bring the thriving economy in Normal, Kentucky when she used her brilliant ideas to bring the Happy Trails Campground back to life, Mae is thrilled and happy to teach the young people.

But when a fellow teacher and archery Coach Roger Carlson, is found stone-cold dead, facedown in one of Happy Trails Campground campers with an arrow sticking out of his back, it puts a damper on the thriving campground when tourists cancel their reservations and Mae’s excitement to teach.

Mae’s hankering to snoop into the coach’s private life and find out exactly why he was renting a camper in Happy Trails and not living at home with his young wife. Her efforts don’t leave her short on suspects. Especially, since Mae uncovered many unhappy parents who had relied on an archery scholarship as their child’s ticket to get out of Normal and go to college.

Mae has to be careful or she just might find an arrow with her name written on it.   (Goodreads)

Review:

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The style allowed me to get a better insight into the characters and their actions.  With the author’s descriptive writing, I was pulled right into the story and I was taken on a grand adventure.  I felt like I was right there listening in on conversations and watching all of the action taking place at the campgrounds.

The characters are well developed and well rounded.  I find Mae and her friends to be very funny and quirky and I really enjoy getting to spend time with them.  They all appear to be Southern sweet and genteel, but do not cross them, you will be sorry if you do! I enjoyed getting to learn a little more about Hank’s family, who is Mae’s boyfriend.

The mystery is well plotted and moves along at a nice pace.  With more than one murder to solve, it is not easy to figure out the culprit. There were plenty of suspects to consider and clues to sift through.

I really enjoy this series and this book did not disappoint.  I would recommend that you check out the whole series, you will be glad that you did.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

Wedding Cake Carnage (MURDER IN THE MIX Book 11) by [Moore, Addison]A baker who sees the dead. One too many suitors.
And a killer. Living in Honey Hollow can be murder.

*A laugh out loud standalone cozy mystery by New York Times Bestseller Addison Moore* All books in the series can be read individually but are best enjoyed in order.

My name is Lottie Lemon, and I see dead pets. On occasion I see a once-upon a human, too, but mostly it’s just cute little furry beasts who have come back from the other side to warn me of their previous owners impending doom.

Someone very close to me is missing—and it’s been a nightmare ever since they’ve disappeared. To top it all off, I stumbled upon a body at the Bridal Expo. My sister’s wedding is just weeks away, and I volunteered to take over a to-do list at least a mile long. Add an ornery talking tiger, an unruly child poltergeist, a firework spectacular and you’ll have the most explosive July Honey Hollow has ever seen.

Lottie Lemon has a brand new bakery to tend to, a budding romance with perhaps one too many suitors, and she has the supernatural ability to see dead pets—which are always harbingers for ominous things to come. Throw in the occasional ghost of the human variety, a string of murders, and her insatiable thirst for justice, and you’ll have more chaos than you know what to do with.

Cherringham - Cliffhanger: A Cosy Crime Series (Cherringham: Mystery Shorts Book 33) by [Costello, Matthew, Richards, Neil]When a hiker falls from a cliff edge while walking the Cotswolds Way, it seems like no accident. The more Jack and Sarah investigate the walkers on the trail that day, the more likely it seems that danger is still afoot. Is there a potential killer in this Cherringham tour group? And when will he or she strike again?

Set in the sleepy English village of Cherringham, the detective series brings together an unlikely sleuthing duo: English web designer Sarah and American ex-cop Jack. Thrilling and deadly – but with a spot of tea – it’s like Rosamunde Pilcher meets Inspector Barnaby. Each of the self-contained episodes is a quick read for the morning commute, while waiting for the doctor, or when curling up with a hot cuppa.

Co-authors Neil Richards (based in the UK) and Matthew Costello (based in the US), have been writing together since the mid 90’s, creating content and working on projects for the BBC, Disney Channel, Sony, ABC, Eidos, and Nintendo to name but a few. Their transatlantic collaboration has underpinned scores of TV drama scripts, computer games, radio shows, and – most recently – the successful crime fiction series Cherringham.  (Amazon)

Kitty Confidential (Pet Whisperer P.I. Book 1) by [Fitz, Molly, Storm, Melissa, Press, Sweet Promise]I was just your normal twenty-something with seven associate degrees and no idea what I wanted to do with my life. That is, until I died… Well, almost.

As if a near-death experience at the hands of an old coffeemaker wasn’t embarrassing enough, I woke up to find I could talk to animals. Or rather one animal in particular.

His full name is Octavius Maxwell Ricardo Edmund Frederick Fulton, but since that’s way too long for anyone to remember, I’ve taken to calling him Octo-Cat. He talks so fast he can be difficult to understand, but seems to be telling me that his late owner didn’t die of natural causes like everyone believes.

Well, now it looks like I no longer have a choice, apparently my life calling is to serve as Blueberry Bay’s first ever pet whisperer P.I while maintaining my façade as a paralegal at the offices of Fulton, Thompson & Associates.

I just have one question: How did Dr. Doolittle make this gig look so easy?  (Amazon)

DIY Diva Laurel McMillan learns that the high walls and guarded gates of Hawkeye Haven can’t protect her community. When Laurel takes her pampered, chocolate Labrador retriever, Bear, for an early morning walk, she finds her friend, security guard Bessie, bleeding and unconscious at her guardhouse post. If the attack on Bessie isn’t enough to set the residents’ nerves on edge, the murder of Victor Eberhart, the unpopular president of the powerful homeowners’ association, certainly does the trick. Despite teaching DIY classes and writing project instructions for her latest book, DIY for Dog Lovers, Laurel manages to squeeze in time for some DIY detective work. But as she gets closer to the truth, Victor’s killer would like nothing better than for the DIY Diva to take a dive.

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Laurel is smart, curious and a great friend. I enjoyed getting to know her and Bear, her Labrador Retriever.  I also enjoyed meeting some of her friends and family that also live in Hawkeye Haven, the gated community where Laurel lives.  It would be the ideal place to live, except that president of the Homeowners Association is a nasty man who is unreasonable. When he is murdered, there are plenty of people who could have done it.  Laurel decides she is going to try to find the killer because she likes solving mysteries.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and pulled me into the community from the very beginning.  The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. I really liked the DIY projects that were included at the end of the book, especially the dog treat recipes.

The mystery was well plotted and there were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider.  I figured out who the killer was about halfway through the book, but that did not take away from my enjoyment of the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I thought it was great start to the series and I look forward to reading the next book when it is published.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

An instructor at five colleges over the years, Paula Darnell most often taught the dreaded first-year English composition classes, but she’s also been happy to teach some fun classes, such as fashion design, sewing, and jewelry making. Paula has a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and a Master’s degree in English from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Like Laurel, the main character in Death by Association, Paula enjoys all kinds of arts and crafts. Some of her memorable projects include making a hat and a cape to wear to Royal Ascot, sewing wedding gowns for both her daughters, exhibiting her textile and mixed-media artwork in juried art shows, and having one of her jewelry projects accepted for inclusion in Leather Jewelry, published by Lark Books. She sells some of her jewelry and hair accessories in her Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/PaulaDJewelry.

Paula’s interest in DIY craft projects and fashion led to her writing hundreds of articles for print and online national publications.

Living in a guard-gated community governed by a homeowners’ association gave Paula the idea for the setting of Death by Association. She finds that residing in an HOA community can be both a blessing and a curse. A Happy-New-Year greeting from her community association called on residents to “start the new year by reviewing your Rules and Regulations booklet,” something unlikely to top anyone’s list of New Year’s resolutions.

Paula lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, with her husband Gary and their 110-pound dog Rocky, whose favorite pastime is lurking in the kitchen, hoping for a handout

When did you know that you wanted to be an author? What things, if any, influenced that decision?

I wrote some short fiction and articles many years ago. For seven years, I wrote online fashion articles for the now defunct About.com, and I’ve also written several DIY craft articles, but Death by Association is my first published novel. I’ve always been an avid reader who enjoys good stories, so this was probably the most influential factor in my decision to be a writer.

With so many cozies being written today, what makes your books stand out from the crowd?

I believe that the setting of Death by Association makes it stand out. I’ve lived in a guard-gated community that has a homeowners’ association for sixteen years, and it was a new, and sometimes surprising, experience for me. Lots of crazy things can happen, and there’s definitely the potential for abuse, which is what occurs in Death by Association when the HOA’s overbearing president twists the rules to the dismay of the residents.

Do you work from an outline or plot or do you just see where the characters take you?

I work from a chapter-by-chapter outline, which I develop after deciding on the characters and main elements of the plot. The outline helps keep the story on track.

Do you read your reviews?  Do you respond to them, good or bad? Do you do anything special to get those reviews?

I read reviews although there are not a lot yet. I would probably never respond to a review because people all have their own opinions, and, by their very nature, reviews are subjective. At the back of Death by Association, my publisher, Cozy Cat Press, has a brief request that states: “If you enjoyed this book, please consider posting a review on your favorite retailer’s website.”

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Be much more persistent early on!

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in someone buying your book(s)?   Who designs your book covers?

Yes. I do believe that covers attract readers. My publisher, Cozy Cat Press, arranged for the cover of Death by Association, and I was able to have some input in the process.

Please give us an insight into your main characters. What do you think makes them special?

Laurel McMillan is the main character and amateur sleuth in Death by Association. She’s a young widow who’s independent and entrpreneurial. She’s made a career for herself by turning her love of DIY crafting and other projects into a full-time job.

Bear is Laurel’s lovable chocolate Labrador retriever. He provides warm fuzzies, and he’s the inspiration for the dog treat recipes, dog scarf project, and dog bed project in the back of Death by Association.

Liz, who is forty years older than Laurel, is Laurel’s next-door neighbor and friend. Liz is known for her flamboyant dress, sense of style, and many marriages. In Death by Association, Liz reveals a long-kept secret.

What have you learned about yourself since becoming an author?

I have learned that DIY projects are not only fun in themselves but they also can inspire situations and characters I might never have imagined otherwise.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

I write part-time.

What do your plans for future projects include?

I am in the process of writing the second book in the DIY Diva Mystery series now. It’s called Death by Design. Look for it sometime this summer. The third book in the series, Death by Denial is planned for late fall this year.

What do you think the hardest part of writing is?  What is the easiest?

As a writer, I find I almost agree with Ernest Hemingway, who said, “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” I disagree with him only in that I use a computer. For me, plotting is probably the easiest part of writing.

What type of books do you like to read? Who are some of your favorite authors?

In fiction, I like to read cozy mysteries and historical mysteries best. Occasionally, I read a thriller or bestseller. Some of my favorite authors are Joanne Fluke, Jane K. Cleland, Joann Carl, Agatha Christie, and Kate Collins.

What is the one thing you would like your readers to know about you?

Laurel comes by her DIY skills honestly. They’re based on my experience with DIY crafting, sewing, jewelry-making, and artwork as well as teaching jewelry-making, sewing, and fashion design classes. I even sell some of my creations on Etsy –
