Review of The Codebook Murders

The Codebook Murders
Oakwood Mysteries, Book #4
Leslie Nagel
5 Stars

Amateur sleuth Charley Carpenter discovers a coded journal that could crack her small town’s most infamous cold case wide open in this charming cozy mystery from the USA Todaybestselling author of The Book Club Murders.

As the owner of Old Hat Vintage Fashions, Charley Carpenter supplies retro apparel to the residents of Oakwood, Ohio, but she’s been known to set business aside to play detective when a mystery rears its head. And there’s no bigger mystery in Oakwood than the murder of Regan Fletcher—a case that’s haunted the town for decades.

Regan’s boyfriend, Carter, did time for the crime—until another man’s confession freed him. But did the “real killer” really do it? Or did Carter walk away with blood on his hands? When Charley stumbles on an old journal written in code, it only complicates the case by revealing a blackmail scheme that targeted dozens of Oakwood’s citizens, giving them all a motive for murder.

Now, with a spate of new suspects to pursue, plus a fresh murder and the abduction of her sleuthing partner, Charley must dig deeper still into the past—even as she risks being buried by her shadowy prey. Joining forces with Detective Marcus Trenault and the newly formed Oakwood Mystery Book Club, Charley turns to a classic whodunit for clues on catching a killer—before more lives are lost, and the truth dies with them.

Leslie Nagel’s delightful Oakwood Mystery novels can be enjoyed together or separately:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Charley and her family and friends all have great relationships and you can tell how much they care about each other. Charley loves her dad, Bobby, so much and she worries about him a lot. And the feeling is mutual. They are each other’s biggest supporters. Charley and her best friend, Frankie, are so funny and you never know what kind of trouble they are going to get in.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and this description pulled me into the story right from the beginning. The first chapter was very realistic and very intense. I felt like I was right there with Charley in the tunnel, worrying about what was going on outside of it. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read.

The mystery was well developed and nicely paced, and there were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider. I was very surprised to find out who the culprit was, and I like when that happens.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I am already looking forward to reading the next book.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Random House Publishing Group-Alibi, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Hairless Harassment (Pet Whisperer P.I. Book 3) by [Fitz, Molly, Press, Sweet Promise]I never signed up to be a private investigator with a snarky, talking cat for a partner, but there’s no backing down now. Especially considering a prominent politician was murdered pretty much right in my backyard.

The only witnesses were the senator’s two hairless cats, Jacques and Jillianne. Normally pets want to help us solve their owner’s murders, but this time it seems the two devious felines might actually be the ones who committed it…

Surprisingly enough, my own partner in crime, Octo-Cat, actually wants to help this time, but he can barely understand our two prime suspects because of their strange Sphynx accents. And I thought speaking tabby was hard!

So, there you have it, even with two successful cases behind me, I really don’t know how I’m going to solve this one. Is it too late to go back and pick another career?  (Amazon)

Hank, her boyfriend and detective of Normal, Kentucky, does not know what to do with her. He is afraid for her safety and he really cares about her a lot. Some days he is ready to pull his hair out.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and creating Southern towns that seem authentic. WELCOME TO SEASCAPE COVE: Book One: The Seascape Cove Cozy Mysteries by [MOORECROFT, M'LISSA]New Location, New Business, New Problems…

When Cressi Harris got dumped by her husband Hugo for a woman half her age, she changed everything.

She left New York City for Seascape Cove, a tiny village almost a hundred miles north of San Francisco.

She stopped ghost writing Hugo’s very successful mystery series and started expressing her creativity in the kitchen of her new restaurant, The Dockside Cafe.

Cressi made the transition painlessly. So did Jacko, her lively black spaniel. Both of them preferred fresh ocean breezes to the traffic fumes of New York City. She never even thought of New York, except when Hugo phoned, which he did too often because he wasn’t a very good writer without Cressi’s help.

Cressi was smart and good at what she did. The Dockside Cafe flourished, even in the winter, and so did her growing friendship with good looking Police Chief, Trent Marlow and crusty retired banker Kevin Rodgers.

Life was pretty darned good…

…Until her troubles started.

Somebody had it in for Cressi, but who? She hadn’t been in town long enough to upset anybody, had she?

Apparently she had… because somebody really had it in for her.

Trent Marlow wasn’t about to let anybody get away with destroying the new life and business Cressi was building. He was determined to discover who was trying to destroy her business, and why.

Welcome to Seascape Cove is Book One of The Seascape Cove Cozy Mystery Series. If you like strong women who take charge of their lives and handle whatever life throws at them, you’ll love Cressi Harris and the friends and family who support her.

If nature could invent intelligence of our scale in a blink of geologic time, who’s to say it hasn’t been done before…

A routine dig in Kazakhstan takes a radical turn for thirty-two-year-old anthropologist Claire Knowland when a stranger turns up at the site with a bizarre find from a remote section of the desolate Kazakh Steppe. Her initial skepticism of this mysterious discovery gives way to a realization that the find will shake the very foundations of our understanding of evolution and intelligence.

Corrupt politics of Kazakhstan force Claire to take reckless chances with the discovery. Among the allies she gathers in her fight to save herself and bring the discovery to light is Sergei Anachev, a brilliant but enigmatic Russian geologist who becomes her unlikely protector even as he deals with his own unknown crisis.

Ultimately, Claire finds herself fighting not just for the discovery and her academic reputation, but for her very life as great power conflict engulfs the unstable region and an unscrupulous oligarch attempts to take advantage of the chaos.

Drawing on Eugene Linden’s celebrated non-fiction investigations into what makes humans different from other species, this international thriller mixes fact and the fantastical, the realities of academic politics, and high stakes geopolitics—engaging the reader every step of the way.

Life has always been sweet on Georgia’s Peach Cove Island, but a case of murder has Marygene Brown down in the pits . . .

For generations, the women of the Brown family on Peach Cove Island have been known for their Southern sass and sweet homemade desserts at their beloved Peach Diner. Since their mother’s passing two years ago, Marygene has been stuck in Atlanta while her sister Jena Lynn has been running the family business. Now Marygene has left her husband and returned to her hometown, where she can almost feel Mama’s presence.

But all is not peachy back home. Marygene has barely tied on an apron when a diner regular drops dead at the counter. When it turns out the old man’s been poisoned, Jena Lynn is led away in handcuffs and the family eatery is closed. Now, to save her sister and the diner, Marygene must find the real killer. With some startling assistance from her Mama’s spirit, Marygene will be serving up a special order of just desserts . . .

Includes Seven Recipes from Marygene’s Kitchen!

This is a good start to a new cozy mystery series.  It has all of the things that I look for in a cozy: engaging characters, a charming setting and a good mystery to solve.  It also has a ghost, which is a real plus in my opinion. It also has a little bit of a darker edge to it because Marygene is a survivor of an abusive spouse.  That topic is not usually found in a cozy but I felt the author handled it with compassion and sensitivity. It is a topic that affects a lot of people and it is good to see that this author was not afraid to include it in her book.

Marygene has had a tough life and she regrets that she left her family to get married.  She is glad to be back home but she feels guilty for leaving. But her sister, Jena Lynn, has forgiven her and all should be well.  But when a customer dies in the Peach Diner, Jena Lynn is arrested and Marygene knows she has to find the real culprit before her sister is put away forever.  Eddi, Marygene’s father and the town sheriff, is not happy with her getting involved in the investigation because of the potential danger. But that does not stop Marygene from snooping.

The characters are fairly well developed and well rounded. I enjoyed getting to know Marygene’s family, friends and coworkers.  And I really liked the fact the the ghost of her mother came back to help in anyway that she can. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I felt like I was right there, watching the action take place and listening in on conversations.  The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.

The mystery was well plotted and moved along at a nice pace.  There were plenty of clues to sift through and suspects to considered. Throw in a couple of red herrings and it was not easily solved.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  And if you like a pinch of paranormal thrown in, this is a book you should read.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
