When did you know that you wanted to be an author?  What things, if any, influenced that decision?

I’ve always loved to read and to write. I was a kid who was checking things out of the library at an early age and reading poetry and autobiographies. I’d spend my summers reading and writing as a teen. I’d rather write than go to parties or be with friends. I’m still that way now.

With so many cozies being written today, what makes your books stand out from the crowd?

My series is a culinary cozy mystery series. The theme is cast iron skillet cooking with recipes at the end of each book. I only know of one other cast iron skillet mystery series out there right now. Plus, my series is based off the village I live and grew up in and the inner city where I was born and spent the first six years of my life—not to mention friends and family of the protagonist all have quirks that my family and friends have.

Do you work from an outline or plot or do you just see where the characters take you?

A little of everything—I have a loose outline to start with—then I move to using my murder board which is a dry erase board to plot. I have a bulletin board too where I keep the key points to the book up at all times. But the story changes from first draft to last. So, a little of everything.

Do you read your reviews?  Do you respond to them, good or bad?  Do you do anything special to get those reviews?

I don’t believe in pushing for reviews (not for myself but I don’t look down on any author who does it—we all have to have our own strategies). Reviews are important to me—not that I get “good” reviews. I’m an educator and I’m always learning. I have a specific notebook where I take notes of all reviews I get on all platforms—including comments from blogs. I reflect over these and use them as I continue to grow as a writer. I will never be a perfect writer—nor do I want to be. I want to continue to get better and grow—writing is a journey—not a race to be won. I appreciate all comments, reviews, emails, text, phone calls, meetings, critiques about my writing—good, bad, or ugly—even the “trolls” as I’ve heard other writers call them have insight…I mean, hey, they gave enough of a care to spit on me—so, that’s something!

What advice would you give to your younger self?

To realize that who I am is enough and not to allow other people to dictate who I am or to allow society to dictate what is a “norm.”

Image result for I'm enough clipart

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in someone buying your book(s)?   Who designs your book covers?

Karen Phillips does my covers. She did the first cover 90% on her own without me weighing in too much. I was naive to the business.  Yet, she has an amazing eye for it—I gave her all kinds of info on the characters, the village, the story, the plot, the twists and she went with it. For the covers of book two and three, I’ve become a lot more vocal weighing in more at like 60 to 70% and we have gone back and forth in discussions and drafts until they look exactly like I want them to look. I’m getting more confident and understanding my vision more as I continue the series.

Please give us an insight into your main characters.  What do you think makes them special?

My editors and readers tell me that my characters are fleshed out well. They sound like people talk; they have quirks like we all do; they struggle with a lot of internal issues from the past—you know we all have demons and baggage. Mostly, what I love about my characters and what I find special about this series is that I work really hard to include diversity in the setting and in the characters—having the main setting take part in a small, cozy village but having a near-by city (like my life growing up) where the people from the village and city have to learn to work together and have to explore and find tolerance and open-mindedness within themselves. The village people (LOL—just saw that pun) think of themselves as open-minded and tolerant but by the Thanksgiving holiday book Turkey Basted to Death, coming out this November 2019—they will begin to realize their tolerance is for those within their inner circle—not outside of the village and they will all (including people from the city) have to re-evaluate their morals, ethics, and values to reassess who they are and who they want to become as a community.

What have you learned about yourselves since becoming an author?

I’m feisty, fiery, and a bit of risk-taker and a bad ass. I bet on myself and I’ve won. What I mean by winning is I work REALLY hard—like seven days a week 16 to 18-hour days—all hours of the day to make this work—to make enough money to pay the bills. It’s fun but not easy by any means. It’s frightening at times too. Yet, here I am at 46 years old doing it and making it work in spite of the fear and in spite of lack of support from some—BUT I have a TON of support by a lot of family, my husband especially, and friends.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

Full time baby—full time!

What do your plans for future projects include?

Thanksgiving holiday book is in the first draft stages and comes out 11/18/19 called Turkey Basted to Death.  Four books come out in 2020. Two of the four are spin-off series to The Cast Iron Skillet Mystery Series. One is a series called Peggy’s Purse Boutique Mystery Series and the second is Gemma’s Bohemian Gems Boutique Mystery Series. Both Gemma and Peggy will show up in Leavensport, Ohio and likewise—Jolie and Ava will show up in Tri-City for Peggy and Gemma’s series too.

What do you think the hardest part of writing is?  What is the easiest?

I love it all. I taught HS English, so I’m used to teaching the writing process. I don’t always love when my editor tells me, “You need to rewrite this entire book.” But who would love that? It’s part of the journey and learning process though—so I’ll take it.

What type of books do you like to read?  Who are some of your favorite authors?

Cozy mysteries, literature, poetry, thrillers—Sara Paretsky, Arthur Golden, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Hunter S. Thompson, P.J. O’Rourke, Agatha Christie, Donna Leon, Sue Grafton, Emily Dickinson, Flannery O’Connor, Elaine Viets, Shakespeare—yeah, I really love to read and re-read the Bard’s work, Homer, Plato, Janet Evanovich.

What is the one thing you would like your readers to know about you?

I’m brutally honest and expect honesty in return.

Image result for honesty clipart

Do you have anything specific you would like to say to your readers?

Honestly, one thing I was prepared for when writing was that some people would be mean for no good reason. I may be jinxing myself here—but that has not happened yet after a year. So, I’m thankful for that. I’ve met in person and met through email, newsletter correspondence, FB pages, messenger, and beyond SO many wonderfully nice people who are extremely loving and supportive and honest all at the same time. I’m learning from each one of them!

Review of A Ghostly Suspect

A Ghostly Suspect
Tonya Kappes
5 Stars

45170162Synopsis:

A funeral, a ghost, a murder . . . It’s all in a day’s work for Emma Lee Raines . . .

especially when the ghost turns out to be someone very dear to her heart. Debbie Dually, psychic and friend who has guided Emma Lee since she was bopped on the head from a falling plastic Santa, local undertaker Emma Lee Raines is told she’s suffering from “funeral trauma.” (Amazon)

Review:

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story right from the start. I felt like I was right there in Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky, visiting with Emma Lee and her friends. I always feel like I should be sipping a glass of sweet tea while I am reading this series.

The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional. Granny is a real pistol and she is so funny, Emma Lee has her hands full with her. Jack Henry is a great boyfriend and he is really trying to accept Emma Lee’s “ability”.

The mystery is well written and moved along at a nice even pace. There were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider and it was not easily solved.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well written cozy mystery. If you enjoy paranormal with your cozy, like I do, then you definitely want to read this book and series.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

When tensions boil over and a vocal protester is silenced forever at the resort site, Robbie ditches the griddle to catch the killer. But if slashed tires are any indication, she’ll need to crack this case before her own aunt gets served something deadly next . . .

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story right from the very start.  South Lick, Indiana, seems like a fun place to visit, even with all of the murders.

The characters are well developed and well developed.  Robbie is a strong character with lots of great qualities.  She loves her family and friends and she is not afraid of putting herself out there when she sees an injustice.  I enjoyed spending time with her and her Aunt Adele, you can tell they care a lot about each other. Aunt Adele is a real firecracker.  The secondary characters added a lot to the story.

The mystery was well developed and carried on well throughout the book.  There were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through and the mystery was not easily solved.

I would highly recommend this book, and series, to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  When I spend time with Robbie, I know I am in for a great time.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Medium Things (A Lost Souls Lane Mystery Book 3) by [Huss, Erin]My name is Zoe Lane, and I see dead people.

I’m not your typical medium. The kind portrayed on your favorite television shows. The spirits who visit me aren’t interested in reuniting with loved ones. Nope. The spirits I connect with have sought me out for one thing and one thing only: justice. A task that would be easier if I were a homicide detective instead of a twenty-three-year-old wannabe journalist with a love of hot romance novels.

Now, the spirit of Andrew “Drew” Foster is here, and he’s desperate for my help. Drew was convicted sixteen years ago for the murder of real estate agent, Margo Stolper. A crime I’m not so sure he committed. It turns out Margo may not have been completely honest in her dealings, and even worse, I think she was a medium just like me. Was she killed because people knew about her gift?

With a possible medium murderer on the loose, I need to be extra cautious. But justice must be served, and if Drew wants to rest in peace, then we need to clear his name. The problem is I’ve made a lot of enemies over the last few months. Well, just one. Sheriff Vance, the most powerful man in Fernn Valley. He’s not about to let me unravel the only murder case he’s ever solved. Not without a fight. I’m ready, though. At least I thought I was. There’s a twist to this case even I didn’t see coming.

If I’m not careful, exonerating Drew just might be the last thing I do.   (Amazon)

The Cumbrian County Lines: Latest stand-alone mystery in the Cumbrian cozy contemporary crime series (The Lakeland Murders Book 12) by [Salkeld, J J]

There’s a fresh young face at Kendal nick, bearing a striking resemblance to DI Andy Hall. Together they tackle a case involving the online exploitation of vulnerable citizens, in this case the peddling of illegal diet drugs. Meanwhile DS Ian Mann has to confront both a county lines drug operation and a half-remembered name from his past – with potentially explosive consequences.

Featuring the usual powerful cast of characters, including new arrival DC Ben Crowley, DC Abla Khan and forensics supremo Sandy Smith, this stand-alone novella in the hit Lakeland Murders series combines J J Salkeld’s enduring interest in current social and policing issues, but told with an emphasis on humour and a strong, ensemble cast of coppers. There’s some fruity language, plenty of banter, a smattering of Lake District dialect, copious quantities of tea, but no extreme violence.  (Amazon)

A Lady's Guide to Gossip and Murder (A Countess of Harleigh Mystery Book 2) by [Freeman, Dianne]How far will some go to safeguard a secret? In the latest novel in Dianne Freeman’s witty and delightful historical mystery series, the adventurous Countess Harleigh finds out . . .

Though American by birth, Frances Wynn, the now-widowed Countess of Harleigh, has adapted admirably to the quirks and traditions of the British aristocracy. On August twelfth each year, otherwise known as the Glorious Twelfth, most members of the upper class retire to their country estates for grouse-shooting season. Frances has little interest in hunting—for birds or a second husband—and is expecting to spend a quiet few months in London with her almost-engaged sister, Lily, until the throng returns.

Instead, she’s immersed in a shocking mystery when a friend, Mary Archer, is found murdered. Frances had hoped Mary might make a suitable bride for her cousin, Charles, but their courtship recently fizzled out. Unfortunately, this puts Charles in the spotlight—along with dozens of others. It seems Mary had countless notes hidden in her home, detailing the private indiscretions of society’s elite. Frances can hardly believe that the genteel and genial Mary was a blackmailer, yet why else would she horde such juicy tidbits?

Aided by her gallant friend and neighbor, George Hazelton, Frances begins assisting the police in this highly sensitive case, learning more about her peers than she ever wished to know. Too many suspects may be worse than none at all—but even more worrying is that the number of victims is increasing too. And unless Frances takes care, she’ll soon find herself among them . . .  (Amazon)

When the body of twenty-year-old Julie Cooper is found – her pockets stuffed full of wilting flowers – in an iron-age hill fort on the edge of the fens, Detective Tara Thorpe and her team are called in to investigate. The evidence points to an illicit affair gone wrong… but is there more to the story?

As always at the Cambridge Constabulary, the case turns personal. Detective Blake is exhausted after the arrival of a new baby with wayward wife Babette, and Tara is keen to put as much distance between herself and Blake as she can – both at the station and on the hunt for the killer. Charming rookie officer Jez is the perfect distraction… but is he a little too good to be true?

Then Tara makes a startling breakthrough when she finds an unsettling family heirloom hidden in the late victim’s bedroom – a golden statue of a sinister-looking cat with emerald eyes. As she traces its origins, Tara begins to realise that Julie’s murder is no one-off crime, but a sinister plot with its roots in a terrible secret that was covered up decades earlier.

The victim, Margo Fenton, was a Carrington family friend, and no one in their circle seems above suspicion. Between client trips to Manhattan and visits to her family in upstate New York, Belinda begins to put the pieces together. But though she’s falling for Stone’s numerous charms, Belinda wonders if she’s cozying up to a killer. And soon, daily contact with a deadly reptile might be the least dangerous part of her life . . .

When tragedy strikes, the bratty royal’s problems land at the manor’s front door and it’s going to take all hands on deck if the paranormal roomies hope to make it out alive.

~The Layaway Dragon

Ambitious Cassandra Sato traded her life in Hawai’i for a dream position as Student Affairs VP at Morton College in tiny Carson, Nebraska. She expected the Midwestern church casseroles, land-locked cornfields, and face-freezing winters would be her biggest challenges, but it’s her job that’s rapidly becoming a nightmare.

A deaf student is dead and the investigation reveals a complicated trail of connections between campus food service, a local farmer’s beef, and the science lab’s cancer research. Together with her few allies, Cassandra must protect the students caught up in the entanglement.

Dealing with homesickness, vandalism, and a stalker, Cassandra is trapped in a public relations disaster that could cost her job, or more. No one said college was easy.

Kelly Brakenhoff is an American Sign Language Interpreter whose motivation for learning ASL began in high school when she wanted to converse with her deaf friends. As an American Sign Language Interpreter with more than twenty years of experience, Kelly’s worked in college classrooms for fifteen different majors. From traipsing across muddy farm fields to stomach-churning medical procedures, and stage interpreting for famous figures, Kelly’s community interpreting interactions number in the thousands. Unfortunately, once she’s stepped away from the job, she usually forgets 90% of what happened. Which helps her keep confidential information safe, but also makes it really hard to grocery shop for more than 5 items without a written list.

Kelly wants to live in a world filled with peace, love, and joy, where people who can hear learn enough sign language to include deaf people in everyday conversations and work. Where every deaf child has early access to language and books with characters like them, and dark chocolate is cheap and plentiful.

When she’s not interpreting or writing, you can find Kelly cheering for her favorite Husker teams or training for half-marathons because she really likes dessert.

Her first mystery, Death by Dissertation, released April 22, 2019.

When did you know that you wanted to be an author? What things, if any, influenced that decision?

I don’t remember not wanting to be an author. My mother’s basement is lined with crates of scribbled journals and notebooks from elementary all the way through high school. Please don’t tell Mom! She’d make me clear out my stuff, but my own basement is full of my kids’ junk. Where would I put those precious artifacts? Because no one wants to read my eleven-year-old angst.

Growing up, teachers told me I was a good writer and nurtured that longing in me. However, just because the people on my Christmas Card list look forward to my amusing letters, that does not necessarily lead to completing an 80,000 word novel. Only hard work and determination does that.

With so many cozies being written today, what makes your books stand out from the crowd?

A young woman from Hawai’i moves to rural Nebraska, and finds her dream job at a small private college. The college has a vibrant Deaf Studies department with professors and students learning ASL and Deaf Culture. Their biology lab is doing cutting edge cancer research using an enzyme produced by beef from a local cattle farm. I think I’ve managed to throw together a wide variety of topics that you wouldn’t expect to see in the same book. Fun characters with a compelling mystery make the whole mixture hang together. Somewhere in there, I want you to recognize a character like someone you know in your own life.

Do you work from an outline or plot or do you just see where the characters take you?

My outline is quite long before I begin writing. However, once I’m halfway through the story, I things change as I follow the characters around and write what they say or do. Then in later revisions, I add layers of clues, red herrings and extra twisty turns to keep the readers guessing.

Do you read your reviews? Do you respond to them, good or bad? Do you do anything special to get those reviews?

This is a great question! I just posted a reminder today on my Facebook page begging people who have read the book to please post a review. This is my first book so, yes every review is precious. I appreciate when people take the time to write a review even if it’s only a few sentences. I’ve always been an avid reader, but it wasn’t until I became an author that I realized reviews are very important to the business. I think readers feel like we’ve bought the book, and we don’t owe the author anything else. But it’s such a kind gesture to take the time to let other readers know when you like a book.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Don’t give up on your dreams, no matter how long it takes to reach them. I’m fifty-one years old and I think that’s exactly how long I needed to be ready to publish my book. Some people are ready when they’re seventeen. It took me longer, but I did it!

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in someone buying your book(s)? Who designs your book covers?

As a reader myself, I choose books by their covers, although I dislike admitting that. Michelle Argyle of Melissa Williams Design does my covers and she kindly held my hand through the process. As a complete newbie, I was awed by her ability to take my synopsis and make a cover that includes hints and clues about the story. It’s a work of art.

Please give us an insight into your main characters. What do you think makes them special?

Cassandra Sato is a fish out of water. She’s grown up in paradise where most of the people look like her. She’s ambitious and takes this job in Nowhere-ville, Nebraska to get the experience she needs to become a university president. She’s a workaholic on one hand, but kind, caring and witty as well. She’s a bit overwhelmed in this story by how different life is surrounded by miles of cornfields and mostly Caucasian students who have had a very different upbringing than she has. In addition, you get to learn about Lance the deaf student and what life is like attending a college where people feel somewhat uncomfortable approaching you because they don’t use the same language. Many people are fascinated by American Sign Language and Deaf Culture, and this book will give you insights into what it’s like to struggle to fit in.

What have you learned about yourselves since becoming an author?

For many years I put off my dreams to help raise my four children who are now young adults. If I ever doubted my passion for writing, I am now certain that this is what I want to be when I grow up. I have no regrets for how long it took. I truly enjoy every aspect of being an author.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

I absolutely love my day job as an ASL Interpreter. I’m self-employed, and I squeeze in writing part-time around my interpreting assignments. Some day I want to write more hours per week, but can’t give up being with deaf folks every day.

What do your plans for future projects include?

The second book in the Cassandra Sato series will release the beginning of August, and I have plans for at least three more. In September, I’ll launch a children’s picture book series featured the adventures of Duke, the deaf dog. The stories are like the Little Critter series by Mercer Mayer, only from the perspective of a deaf child. I can’t wait to get them out into the world. I want deaf children to be able to relate to books with characters like them.

What do you think the hardest part of writing is? What is the easiest?

Beginnings are fun because I love brainstorming opening lines and opening pages. Usually I know where the story begins and ends. I struggle with connecting the middle to the ending. I don’t want a reader to guess the ending too early and I spend a lot of time trying to make the mystery complicated enough that it’s not easy to solve.

What type of books do you like to read? Who are some of your favorite authors?

I like Janet Evanovich’s characters that make me laugh out loud, Sue Grafton (I finally found an All-Purpose Black Dress!), John Grisham, Mary Kay Andrews, Hank Phillipi Ryan. Through my work becoming an author, I’ve met many authors. Now my to-be-read list is longer than my arm.

I’ve been in a Book Club for 19 years, and we read any genre. We take turns  monthly choosing the book and the restaurant. Without them, I wouldn’t have opened many books that ended up being my favorites. I encourage people to read a wide variety of topics and time periods.

What is the one thing you would like your readers to know about you?

While many authors are introverts who hide in their writing lairs, I’m very extroverted. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by receiving photos of readers enjoying my book while lounging at the beach or watching their child’s softball games. This is all so new to me! I love getting messages about what readers’ favorite scenes were, or how they couldn’t put the book down. Please feel free to comment or contact me if you want to chat. I’m really enjoying getting to know my readers.

Do you have anything specific you would like to say to your readers?

Thanks so much for reading this interview and being so interested in books. I read for escape and entertainment, and I hope you’ll come along with me throughout this story and many more. I’m just getting started!

Bite Club

(Goodreads)

Review:

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. The descriptive writing of the author had me feeling like I was in Connecticut, watching all of the action taking place and listening in on conversations. And the descriptions from the dog shows had me feeling like I was right there, watching the behind-the-scenes action. I watch dog show on television whenever they are on, and it was fun to get some insight into their world.

The characters are well rounded and well rounded. Melanie is a funny, caring hardworking mom who has a lot going on in her life. But somehow she is able to juggle everything. I enjoyed getting to spend time with Melanie and her family and friends. I enjoy when the protagonist has a family, to me it makes them see more realistic. Aunt Peg is a real pill, but in her own way, she loves Melanie and her family.

The mystery was well plotted and moved along at a nice pace. There were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider and it was not easily solved. And there was another mystery to solve involving her friend Terry, which I enjoyed reading about.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. If you enjoy animals in your cozy and you like dog shows, this is definitely for you.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
