It’s Christmastime in the quiet Los Angeles County city of Vista Beach, home of computer programmer and tole-painting enthusiast Aurora (Rory) Anderson. The magic of the season fills the air as residents enjoy school concerts, a pier lighting ceremony and the annual sand-snowman contest.

During the weeks leading up to Christmas, Rory plans on painting ornaments to sell at the local craft fair and joining in on the holiday fun. But she finds the season anything but jolly after the house across the street is torn down, revealing a decades old crime. Past meets present when her father is implicated in the murder.

Fearing for her father’s future, Rory launches her own investigation, intent on discovering the truth and clearing his name.

The mystery was well plotted and moved along at a steady pace.  There were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider.  There were enough twists and turns and red herrings thrown in, and it was not easily solved.  The past and the present were woven together very nicely and it made the mystery more intriguing.

The  characters are well developed and well rounded.  I enjoyed spending time with Rory and her friends and family.  The writing style flows smoothly and it defines those characters very clearly  by their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  This would be a great addition to you holiday reading list.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

Review of Holiday Roast Mortem

Holiday Roast Mortem
A Killer Coffee Mystery, Book #7
Tonya Kappes
5 Stars

Holiday Roast Mortem: A Cozy Mystery (A Killer Coffee Mystery Book Seven) by [Kappes, Tonya]

Synopsis:

Christmas is right around the corner.

Fresh off the Christmas Pawrade and Central Park tree lightening, Honey Springs is buzzing with the excitement of the season.

Roxy Bloom and Patrick Cane are hosting the ultimate Christmas Day Diner for all of their friends and family at The Bean Hive. Roxy has been so busy with her Jingle Bells Lattes and planning the party that Patrick whisks her off for a romantic dinner at the Watershed for some alone time.

Their dinner turns out to be a headache. They were seated next to Ryan and Yvonne Moore, who fought the entire time.

After dinner, Roxy and Patrick see the couple drive off the road into Lake Honey Springs, Patrick dives into the frigid lake to save the couple only to find Ryan was already dead.

After a preliminary autopsy, Ryan Moore’s death was not an accident, leaving Yvonne Moore the number one suspect.

When Yvonne asks Roxy Bloom to help her figure out who killed her husband, Roxy jumps at the chance to put her Jingle Bell Lattes and holiday planning aside to help out a friend.

One problem, Roxy starts to wonder if Yvonne is really the killer and using Roxy to get away with murder after Kirk, Roxy’s ex-husband and defending lawyer for the deceased Ryan Moore, lets her know a big secret that would change the entire investigation. (Goodreads)

Review:

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. There is a lot of action going on in this book, and that is a great thing. The author is very talented in creating a believable southern setting and I can picture it so vividly in my mind.

The characters are well rounded, well developed and three dimensional. Roxy and Patrick are a great couple and I enjoyed getting to spend time with them. Aunt Maxi can be a pistol but she loves Roxy completely. Getting to spend time with Roxi and her family and friends is time well spent.

The mystery was well plotted and moved along at a steady pace. There were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider and it was not easily solved, which is the way I like my mysteries.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. If you are looking for a great holiday read that is funny and has great characters, grab a copy of this book.

Potions Are for Pushovers (An Eleanor Wilde Mystery Book 2) by [Berry, Tamara]It may have been a ghost that led Eleanor Wilde to set up shop in a quaint English village. But now that she’s established herself as the town witch, Ellie’s contentedly casting spells on anyone desperate enough—or gullible enough—to request her mysterious potions…

Selling mystical elixirs and tantalizing tonics is a pretty good way for a fake medium to earn a living. Or at least it’s Ellie’s main source of income—until a villager turns up dead. The cause? Murder by poisoning.  And though Ellie’s concoctions don’t include anything worthy of a skull and crossbones, suddenly she’s the prime suspect. Her only recourse is to find the culprit who did do away with Sarah Blackthorne. No one liked the mean old battle-axe. But did anyone hate her enough to kill her?

It’s enough of a mystery to make Ellie hang up her witch’s hat and take millionaire beau Nicholas Hartford up on his offer to keep her afloat.  Except Ellie is not the kind of woman to lean on a man—least of all a man she adores but whose place in her life is uncertain. Besides, Ellie’s taken on two young witches-in-training—apprentices if you will—and both of them are convinced a werewolf is the murderer.

Just as Ellie’s wondering if there really is something otherworldly going on, animals suddenly begin to disappear—including her beloved cat, Beast. Now Ellie’s on the warpath to uncover the wicked truth about the people and the place she’s only just begun to call home…  (Amazon)

Review of The Mystery Before Christmas

The Mystery Before Christmas
Cat In The Attic, Book #2
Kathi Daley
5 Stars

A Cat in the Attic Mystery: The Mystery Before Christmas by [Daley, Kathi]Synopsis:

In book 2 of The Cat in the Attic series – In addition to the time she spends at the animal shelter Callie has a new sideline writing human interest stories for the regional newspaper, there is a Secret Santa in town committing random acts of kindness, Cass has a new murder to solve, and Naomi’s friend Hancock comes to town.

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. The relationship between Callie and Cass is developing nicely and you can tell that they mean a lot to each other. The author is very talented in her character development and these characters are people you would want to be friends with.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. I really liked the theme of this book and the moral dilemma that Callie was faced with. I thought that gave an extra heartfelt feeling to this book, one I really enjoyed. The mystery was well plotted and carried on well throughout the book.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. This author has another hit series, and I look forward to reading the next one.

Scarlet Fever: A Novel ("Sister" Jane Book 12) by [Brown, Rita Mae]Winter blizzards bring a flurry of cases to solve in this riveting new foxhunting mystery featuring “Sister” Jane Arnold and her incorrigible hounds from New York Times bestselling author Rita Mae Brown.

Frigid February air has settled into the bones of the Blue Ridge Mountains, making for a slow foxhunting season, though “Sister” Jane Arnold’s enthusiasm is not so easily deterred. With the winter chill come tweed coats, blazing fireplaces—and perhaps another to share the warmth with, as the bold hunting scarlets worn by the men in Sister Jane’s hunting club make the hearts of women flutter—until someone’s stops entirely.

Harry Dunbar, a member of the Jefferson Hunt club with a penchant for antique furniture, is found with his skull cracked at the bottom of the stairs to a local store. There are no telltale signs of foul play—save for the priceless (and stolen) Erté fox ring in his pocket. Sister and her hounds set out to uncover the truth: was this simply an accident—a case of bad luck—or something much more sinister?

Steeped in the deep traditions of Virginia horse country and featuring a colorful cast of characters both two- and four-legged, Scarlet Fever is another spirited mystery from Rita Mae Brown.  (Amazon)

The Thief of St Martins: Dottie Manderson mysteries: Book 5 by [Allan, Caron]

Reviewers said: “Five stars! Delightfully entertaining, rich characters, suspenseful, charming all in one; anxiously awaiting the next one!”
“a fascinating tale set in England in the 1930s. This ‘cosy crime’ novel, with its measure of burgeoning romance, is a good read; something to entertain and satisfy in front of a burning log fire in the dark days of winter. The settings and period detail are excellent…The denouement is swift, tense and satisfying…”
“I received this on a Friday and could not put it down – goodbye housework – not for too long though as I was so enthralled I finished it Saturday evening.”
“I was worried to read this as I didn’t think it would be as good as the Criss Cross series… but I needn’t have fussed as it was again simply brilliant.”
“Dottie Manderson is a gorgeous character…A great read and I’m looking forward to catching up with more of Dottie.”

YThe Slay of the Santas: The Jennifer Hunter Mysteries (The Jennifer Hunter Series Book 1) by [Gene, Kacey]ou better watch out…you better not cry…or you might be the next to die.

It’s Christmas time in the snowy, quaint town of Middlebridge, Wisconsin, and Jennifer Hunter — a sweet, organized second-grade teacher who has a mind for sleuthing — is ready to spend her Christmas break crocheting, baking, and relaxing. But before the school bell can ring for Christmas break, her best friend and Middlebridge’s Lieutenant, Jake Hollow, shows up in her classroom, but he’s not there to bring a cup of Christmas cheer. There’s a murder in town, and he needs Jennifer’s help solving the crime.

Jennifer soon discovers that not only is the killer targeting retired Santa Clauses, but he’s also staging his victims like scenes from the Charles Dickens novel A CHRISTMAS CAROL. As Jake and Jennifer follow the clues, more questions than answers start to arise: What is this Society of Santas they keep hearing about? Why is the killer leaving behind empty pudding packages at each crime scene? And what in the world does the book A CHRISTMAS CAROL have to do with the victims?

Add to that a tight-lipped orphan boy who’s housing a pack of puppies in one of the victim’s buildings, a quirky book store owner who lies about ever having sold a copy of A CHRISTMAS CAROL and Jennifer’s date with a fellow school teacher that ends in total disaster. In between holiday parties, family obligations, baking, and creating handmade Christmas presents, Jennifer must craft together an investigation that catches the killer and saves the Santa Clauses in town. Otherwise, the night before Christmas might be their last.

This clean, cozy mystery will captivate readers with Jennifer’s amateur sleuthing that entangles her in snow-deep shenanigans, cryptic car chases, and more chocolate pudding than she ever imagined. Readers will fall in love with the quick-witted and craft-loving Jennifer Hunter, who is down-to-earth and has a heart as warm as a crackling fire on a cold winter’s night. The charming friendship between Jennifer and Lieutenant Jake Hollow epitomizes the quaint, familial feel that lives in small towns, especially those sleepy hamlets with snow-capped houses and a love for Christmas. THE SLAY OF THE SANTAS is an exhilarating page-turner with cliffhangers around every corner, and it will bring the joy of the holiday season all year round.

Readers who love cozy mysteries like Jessica Beck’s PUMPKIN PLEAS, Betty Hechtman’s BY HOOK OR BY CROOK, and Joanna Campbell Slan’s KIKI LOWENSTEIN SERIES and readers who have holiday favorites like Charles Dickens’s A CHRISTMAS CAROL, Louisa May Alcott’s LITTLE WOMEN, and O’Henry’s “THE GIFT OF THE MAGI,” will be enchanted by Kacey Gene’s THE SLAY OF THE SANTAS.  (Amazon)

A Christmas Mystery (Cambridge Murder Mysteries Book 4) by [King, Charlot]What could be better than a Christmas murder mystery! One to read on the sofa in front of a fire, or for the stocking!

A page-turning whodunnit in the tradition of Agatha Christie, Colin Dexter, and a murder mystery fuelled by poison in the dark alleys of Cambridge …

Review on the series:
Amazon review “I always like finding a new author with something a little bit different in the crime genre, and Charlot King is certainly that.”

“A wonderful murder mystery, deftly handled by Charlot and brought bang up to date with twists and subplots that entice the reader”

Captivating Whodunnit Murder Mystery!

Professor Elizabeth Green, a professor of poisons, has travelled to Oxford to deliver a keynote speech at Catte College when Father Christmas bursts into a formal supper, leaving a woman dead. It is not long before Elizabeth herself is in the firing line with the local Oxford Inspector, as more bodies start to fall. Will she solve the puzzle before Christmas?

And what of Professor Elizabeth Green?…
In her fifties, this female protagonist is quintessentially English. An eccentric professor in her ivory tower, she maintains a sharp wit, yet is flawed by her inability to connect well with people, instead giving off a cold, opinionated and sometimes acerbic air. Though very kind to all animals (dogs, cats and the rest!) – a vegan – and a great gardener, in truth she keeps her friends close, and only lets a few dear people into her world.

This latest murder mystery from Charlot is Bk4 of the Cambridge Murder Mysteries and can be read as a stand-alone novel  (Amazon)

Lady Takes the Case (Manor Cat Mystery Book 1) by [Casey, Eliza]When a dinner party turns deadly, the feisty Lady Cecilia Bates and intuitive cat Jack are on the case, in this first entry to an exciting new historical-mystery series.

England 1912. Danby Hall is the only home Lady Cecilia Bates has ever known. Despite the rigid rules of etiquette and her mother the Countess of Avebury’s fervent desire to see her married off, Lady Cecilia can’t imagine life anywhere else. But now, with an agricultural depression sweeping the countryside, the Bates family’s possession of the hall is suddenly in peril.

A possible solution arrives in the form of the imperious American heiress Annabel Clarke. The Earl and Countess of Avebury are determined that Cecilia’s brother, Patrick, will win Annabel’s hand in marriage—and her fortune along with it. To help the lackluster Patrick in this pursuit, the Bates and their staff arrange a grand house party upon the heiress’s arrival.

When a guest dies after sipping from a glass meant for Annabel, it’s clear the Bates have a more poisonous problem on their hands than a lack of chemistry. As the scandal seizes Danby, Cecilia sets out to find the culprit, with help from Annabel’s maid, Jane, and Jane’s curiously intelligent cat, Jack.

After the poison that someone had stashed away inside the manor is discovered, Cecilia is left with two possibilities: Either a resident of Danby snapped and tried to kill the arrogant heiress, or the threat is coming from one of their guests, who would love to see the Bates family’s decline become permanent.  (Amazon)

Southern girl Verity Long needs a Christmas miracle…

Verity is ready to deck the halls, jingle some bells, and maybe, just maybe have a merry Christmas with her boyfriend’s stuffy family. Truly, if she doesn’t extend the proverbial olive branch to the overbearing Wydells, she’s afraid she’ll hit them over the head with it.

But when her boyfriend’s mother pulls a shocking stunt, Verity finds herself with a big decision to make. And if that’s not enough, there’s an unexpected guest at her door. It’s the ghost of the woman who helped rescue Verity’s pet skunk three years ago that very night. And now she’s there to change Verity’s life as well.
