Review of Blind Search

Blind Search
Mercy & Elvis Mystery, Book #2
Paula Munier
5+ Stars

43263537Synopsis:

Former Army MP Mercy Carr and her retired bomb-sniffing dog Elvis are back in Blind Search, the sequel to the page-turning, critically acclaimed A Borrowing of Bones

It’s October, hunting season in the Green Mountains–and the Vermont wilderness has never been more beautiful or more dangerous. Especially for nine-year-old Henry, who’s lost in the woods. Again. Only this time he sees something terrible. When a young woman is found shot through the heart with a fatal arrow, Mercy thinks that something is murder. But Henry, a math genius whose autism often silences him when he should speak up most, is not talking.

Now there’s a murderer hiding among the hunters in the forest–and Mercy and Elvis must team up with their crime-solving friends, game warden Troy Warner and search-and-rescue dog Susie Bear, to find the killer–before the killer finds Henry. When an early season blizzard hits the mountains, cutting them off from the rest of the world, the race is on to solve the crime, apprehend the murderer, and keep the boy safe until the snowplows get through.

Inspired by the true search-and-rescue case of an autistic boy who got lost in the Vermont wilderness, Paula Munier’s mystery is a compelling roller coaster ride through the worst of winter–and human nature. (Goodreads)

Review:

Search and Rescue books are one of my favorite genres to read, and this book and series are as good as any that I have read. I have always been fascinated with this subject and I am always looking for good books revolving around this. I am happy to say that I found a great series in the Mercy and Elvis series.

The characters are well wounded and well developed. Mercy is a no-nonsense type of woman, she is tough as nails and she has a keen sense of right and wrong. But she also has a soft side, which we see when she is interacting with her grandmother, Patience, and Elvis. Then we see a caring loving Mercy.

Elvis and Susie Bear, Troy’s search and rescue dog, are such an integral part of the book. They know when they have a job to do, and they are eagerly looking forward to doing that job. But they also love to act like dogs, and they enjoy spending time with each other and any human they can find.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book I felt like I was right there watching all of the action taking place. The mystery was well plotted and had me riveted until I found out who the culprit was.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted mystery. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, St. Martin’s Press, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

“Readers will cheer this brisk, literate addition to the world of small-town cozies.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“Hits all the right notes—a unique setting, friends and family, an intriguing mystery, and even the promise of romance.”
—Sofie Ryan, New York Times bestselling author of the Second Chance Cat mysteries.

“Draws readers into the fold of suspects in Shady Creek and doesn’t let go until the culprit is uncovered. There are laugh-out-loud moments, hold-your-breath moments, and moments when you’ll think you have the mystery figured out, but the surprises keep coming!”
—USA Today bestselling author Amy M. Reade

Review:

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and she makes her words come alive in my mind.

The characters are well rounded and well developed. I like the way the staff at The Flip Side treat each other like family, they are much more than coworkers. I am liking Ivan more with each book I read, he is like a gentle giant.

I really enjoyed the Golden Oldies Games and the fact that older people can still be active and compete if they want to. People in real life should remember that.

The mysteries were well plotted and moved along at a steady pace. There were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider and there were some red herrings thrown in just for fun. I was surprised at who the culprit was, which I think is great.

I would recommend this book. and series, to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. If you have not already checked these books out, what are you waiting for?

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

One of her new friends is murdered. She herself has been poisoned and she finds a list of anagrams on her dead friend’s floor.
As the killer strikes again, it’s obvious that the women of Bar Harbor aren’t safe. Kelley and the town’s firefighters, it’s up to Rosie to stop the murderer before he strikes again.

From New York Times and internationally bestselling author, artist, and podcaster Carrie Jones, this first book in the Bar Harbor Rose mystery series combines the charm of Bridget Jones, quirkiness of Maine life and harsh reality of a New England mystery.  (Amazon)

Marnie hires the P.I. firm—and specifically Lola—to get to the bottom of her son’s death. There’s not much to go on, but Lola would rather drop dead than leave a case unsolved.

As the owner of Miracle Books, Nora Pennington figures all the wet weather this spring is at least good for business. The local inns are packed with stranded travelers, and among them Nora finds both new customers and a new friend, the sixtysomething Sheldon, who starts helping out at the store.

Since a little rain never hurt anyone, Nora rides her bike over to the flea market one sodden day and buys a bowl from Danny, a Cherokee potter. It’ll make a great present for Nora’s EMT boyfriend, but the next day, a little rain turns into a lot of rain, and the Miracle River overflows it banks. Amid the wreckage of a collapsed footbridge, a body lies within the churning water.

Nora and the sheriff both doubt the ruling of accidental drowning, and Nora decides it’s time for the Secret, Book, and Scone Society to spring into action. When another body turns up, it becomes clearer that Danny’s death can’t be blamed on a natural disaster. A crucial clue may lie within the stone walls of the Inn of Mist and Roses: a diary, over a century old and spattered with candle wax, that leads Nora and her friends through a maze of intrigue—and onto the trail of a murderer . . .  (Amazon)

The Burning Bowl: A Dark Paranormal Cozy Mystery Novel (Mystic California Cozies Book 3) by [Ruth, Dovie]When Gianna Petrillo came home from college with a teaching credential in hand, there were plenty of ghosts to greet her in that Central California oil town — both old and new. Her old flame, who was the son of an oil baron, had married … but he certainly hadn’t settled down. In fact, something had gone terribly wrong for Harvard Knottingham. He was even threatening to blow up his family’s oil wells.

Esther Grim, a peculiar electrical engineer, moved into town about the same time. She got a heck of a deal on Miss Toadvine’s pink cottage. So what if the previous owner had been murdered there? Oh, it mattered. That house seemed to wear an aura of misfortune like a funeral hat.

If that wasn’t bad enough, Miss Toadvine’s murderer was still on the lam. Some folks swore they’d seen Bucky Dobbs around town, but perhaps that was just a fabrication. There was a rumor that he’d run off to Texas.

Gianna did her best to keep a level head by keeping busy with her new job. And a bit of good fortune came her way. Her old friend Sylvia offered her an Appaloosa mare to trail ride in the foothills that surrounded their town.

Sergeant Rodney Gullett warned Gianna about riding alone on the outskirts of town, especially after dark. Interesting, since it had always been safe in the past. Did Sergeant Gullett know something? Or did he have something to hide?  (Amazon)

I really enjoyed this story . . . The mystery itself was quite interesting . . . I will definitely watch for more by this author.
~Carla Loves to Read

This book is so funny, it reminds me of the early Stephanie Plum mysteries, but not as wacky. The mystery was well-paced.
~Diane Reviews Books

The whole book is filled with so much humor that you won’t be able to put this down. It’s a madcap mystery, and I highly recommend it! Hurry up and get book two done, please!!
~CHRISTY’S COZY CORNERS

When single mom and recent widow Cameron Chandler takes a much-needed job at Penny-wise Investigations, a detective agency conveniently located in a suburban shopping mall, she grabs the chance to reinvent herself. Her first case is to locate a runaway girl, something her predecessor had been pursuing before he disappeared. Following in his footsteps, the trail leads to a survivalist camp on a remote island in northern Puget Sound. Armed with only a Swiss Army Knife and her quirky on-the-job training as a suburban sleuth, Cameron uncovers more than she bargained for. She soon finds herself in a fight for her own survival in this lighthearted mystery set in Seattle and the San Juan Islands to the north.

The theme of this book was unique and I really enjoyed that.  A discount detective agency at a mall, that grabbed my attention right away.

The characters are well written and well developed.  The cast of characters are quirky and unusual and they all have their own special area of expertise.  Combined as a whole, they make a great detective team. Cameron is smart and gutsy and she will do whatever it takes to provide for her kids.  I enjoyed the fact that she was older and has a family, that was refreshing.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me in from the very beginning of the book.  There was enough mystery and suspense and, even though I thought I had it figured out a couple of times, I was wrong, and that was okay.

I would recommend this book to anyone enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  This book contained a full price mystery at a discount price.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

Angie Fox
5 Stars

New York Times bestseller Angie Fox celebrates 5 years of the Southern Ghost Hunter series with a limited edition boxed set of the first three stories in the series, along with never-before-seen additional content, including deleted scenes, original art, an inside look at the characters, and a behind-the-scenes peek at how the series came together.

It leads to an offer she can’t refuse from the town’s bad boy, the brother of her ex and the last man she should ever partner with.

A Ghostly Gift
Verity Long doesn’t want to see ghosts, and she’d rather not let anyone know her little secret, either. But when a restless spirit stirs up trouble in her friend’s resale shop, Verity and her very new, very dead gangster friend team up to learn what is really happening.

The Skeleton in the Closet
A haunted library is no place for a girl who can see ghosts, but when Verity Long stumbles on a dead body in the middle of the main reading room, she has to believe someone…even a dead someone…must have witnessed the crime.

*This edition contains never-before-seen material and will be available for a limited time. (Goodreads)

Review:

I have read this series from the very first book, and it is one of my favorite series. I love the characters, the setting and the mystery.

The characters are well rounded, well developed and three dimensional. Verity is one strong woman, she has to be to be able to deal with all of the things going on in her life. Frankie is one stubborn, gruff ghost but you can tell that he has a soft spot for Verity, but he would never admit it. And Lucy, the skunk, is one of my all time favorite cozy animals.

The writing style flows smoothly and the stories are an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the book right away. She is also very talented in creating suspense and tension with the written word.

This anniversary edition contains the first 2 books and a novella in the series. It also includes deleted scenes, which I found very interesting and had me wondering why they were deleted. There is also a little insight into a few of the characters, which I enjoyed. There were examples of illustrations of the book cover for first book and it was like I was getting a look at the process first hand, which was great.

I would highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a well written cozy series. This anniversary edition has enough special treats to make it worth your buying.

Review of Last Licks

Last Licks
A Lickety Splits Mystery, Book #3
Cynthia Baxter
5 Stars

45480737. sx318 Synopsis:

It’s autumn in the Hudson Valley, and Kate McKay has some tricks up her sleeve for a deliciously spooky season at her Lickety Splits Ice Cream Shoppe. But with a cold-blooded murderer thrown into the mix, the scares are about to become a little too real . . .

Kate receives the shock of a lifetime when she’s blindsided by an offer she can’t refuse. An assistant movie director desperately wants to shoot a key scene at Lickety Splits and she’s willing to pay big bucks to sweeten the last-minute deal. All Kate has to do is tolerate a bustling film crew for a few hours and provide one important prop–a scoop of handmade ice cream . . .

But when up-and-coming actress Savannah Crane drops dead after spooning down some chocolate almond fudge, Kate’s first taste of Hollywood might be her last. Someone poisoned the leading lady, and with Lickety Splits draped in yellow crime scene tape, detectives are ready to cast Kate as the leading suspect . . .

Determined to clear her name, Kate finds herself churning through a long list of unsavory characters to catch the real killer lurking around town. As she uncovers the truth about the jealous rivals and obsessive stalkers who haunted Savannah’s life, Kate soon realizes that tangling with the late starlet’s “fans” could make this her most terrifying fall yet . . .

Includes mouthwatering ice cream recipes from the Lickety Splits Ice Cream Shoppe! (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. I really enjoy getting to spend time with Kate and her family, friends and coworkers. They all get along great and care about each other. The relationship between Kate and her Grams is heartfelt, you can feel the love between them.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. I enjoyed the Halloween setting and all of the decorations that were described as part of Lickety Split’s Halloween theme. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read.

The mystery was well plotted and moved along at a steady pace. There were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider. Throw in some red herrings and it was not easily solved. I was surprised at who the killer was, which is great.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. This book is a sweet treat, just like all of the ice cream that Kate serves.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

The Medium's Tale (A Lost Souls Lane Mystery Book 5) by [Huss, Erin]My name is Zoe Lane, and I see dead people.

At least…I used to.

Communications with the “other side” are down, and I have no idea why. This couldn’t have come at a worst time because the town’s pharmacist, Mr. Sanders, has just been murdered. Police have all but closed the case because the evidence overwhelmingly points to one person. Problem is, my medium senses are telling me there’s more to the story.  I may not know for sure who pulled the trigger, but I do know things aren’t lining up and there are plenty of people who wanted the victim dead. Of course, no one is listening to me because I’m the town’s resident nut job.

Looks like I’ll have to find the killer myself, which would be a heck of a lot easier if my paranormal gifts weren’t on the fritz. This has never happened to me before, and thanks to extensive research (fine, I Googled it) I do have a few theories as to what might be going on. And if any of my theories pan out, Mr. Sanders could be the last spirit I ever help.  (Amazon)

Careless Whiskers (Cat in the Stacks Mystery Book 12) by [James, Miranda]When librarian Charlie Harris’ daughter is falsely accused of murder, he and his faithful feline Diesel must leap forward to crack the case in this all-new installment in the New York Times bestselling series.

Charlie Harris has sworn off investigating murder and mayhem after a recent close call. Instead, he’s delighted to cheer on his daughter, Laura, who’s starring in a production of Careless Whispers. The theater department at Athena College is debuting the play written by a fledgling playwright with local connections and Charlie’s son-in-law, Frank Salisbury, will be calling the directorial shots.

Laura is upset to learn that Luke Lombardi, an overbearing actor she knew from her time in Hollywood will also be taking part in the production as a guest artist. Lombardi arrives with an entourage in tow and promptly proceeds to annoy everyone involved with the production. When he collapses and dies on stage, after drinking from a glass Laura handed him, she becomes the chief suspect in his murder.

Charlie knows his daughter is innocent, and  he’s not going to let anyone railroad his little girl. So,  despite his intentions to put his amateur sleuthing days behind him, Charlie has to take center stage, and with Diesel’s help, shine a  spotlight on the real killer.  (Amazon)
