Game of Bones
Melanie Travis, Book #25

52745087. sx318 sy475 Synopsis:

Standard Poodle owner Melanie Travis is an excellent judge of dogs—and people. But what happens when an unnamed killer emerges at one of the fiercest all-breed competitions ever?

As Greenwich, Connecticut, slows down during a bitterly cold February, Melanie and her spunky Aunt Peg head to the city that never sleeps for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden. Aunt Peg can’t wait to demonstrate her judging chops on national TV, even after being hounded by frustrating mishaps—all seemingly orchestrated by Victor Durbin, an ousted Paugussett Poodle Club member with a bone to pick. But the bright lights of the show ring grow dim when Victor is found murdered, and she’s the one topping the suspect list . . .

Driven to solve the crime on her aunt’s behalf, Melanie fetches hair-raising clues about the victim. Victor didn’t score many friends with his unethical breeding practices, sketchy puppy café, and penchant for mercilessly scamming others to get ahead. He burned so many bridges that his own business partner admits to being delighted by news of his death. It appears Victor finally toyed with the wrong person, and as Melanie digs up more chilling evidence, she realizes that exonerating Aunt Peg means confronting a murderer who’s in it to win it . . . (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. I really enjoy the fact that Melanie has a family, you get to see her as a mom and all of the things that go into being a mother and wife. Aunt Peg finally gets to be a judge at the Westminster Dog Show. I really enjoyed getting to learn more about the Granddaddy of all dog shows, that was very interesting.

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions helped me to feel like I was right there at the dog show, watching all of the action taking place.

The mystery was well plotted and there were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider. I thought I knew who the culprit was but I was wrong (which happens a lot).

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Murder in the Backwater: The Lainey Maynard Mystery Series - Book 2 by [Laura Hern]Everyone looked forward to it…

Lainey and her friends volunteered to help organize the fishing opener. It was supposed to be easy. Crowd control and a drawing of names. Nothing to it.

…until the dream.

Shep had always seen things. He’d gone to the police many times over the years, until they stopped listening. The town’s people called him crazy. This time, Lainey believed him.

Would anyone else?

Her keen sense of intuition and cunning wit have served her well in the past. The more she digs, the more dirt piles up. This time, though, it may be more than she can handle. Could the town’s favorite son, a former college football star, be involved?

Mistaken identities, smuggling, stink bait, and cat burglars lie at the heart of this delightful cozy mystery.

Poodle Versus The Assassin (Cottage Country Cozy Mysteries Book 1) by [Anne Shillolo]

Rocco. He’s got a nose for the news… but can he sniff out a killer?
A 50-something local newspaper publisher and a pampered prince of a poodle stumble upon a shocking crime in a cottage-country small town.
Who killed the mayor? It’s up to Zora Flynn and her nasty small poodle Rocco to sort out a distinctive cast of characters in the town of Williamsport and find the murderer.
Meet Zora. She’s one of a kind, flavored with a dash of Agatha Raisin and a splash of Stephanie Plum, and her exploits and foibles will have you laughing out loud before the end of Chapter 1.
Her small dog, Rocco, wears a bright blue collar studded with yellow crowns. With his regal personality, he amuses Zora with his snide comments and princely demands. Despite this, he is a poodle of action. And Zora’s secret weapon.
Surrounded by rocky cliffs, pristine lakes and picture-perfect scenery, Williamsport is a charming town in cottage country. But now the murder of the mayor casts a shadow. Police chief Arni Korhonen looks like he stepped from the pages of GQ but he’s being forced to consider Zora as a suspect. Can Zora and her reporters Brady and Olivia track down the real killer before the noose tightens around Zora, jeopardizing her business and their livelihood?
Poodle Versus The Assassin is the highly entertaining first book in an ongoing series starring Zora and Rocco.
(It probably goes without saying, but the Poodle Versus… Series is good, clean fun, except for the occasional suspicious death. No graphic violence, sex or swearing.)  (Amazon)

At Open Your Imagination, she teaches garden design and sells everything from fairy figurines to tinkling wind chimes. Now she’s starting a book club tea.

But the light of the magical world she’s created inside her shop is darkened one night when she discovers neighboring dog-grooming business owner Mick Watkins dead beside her patio fountain. To make matters worse, the police suspect Courtney of the crime. To clear her name and find the real killer, Courtney will have to wing it. But she’s about to get a little help from an unexpected source . . .

Death Comes to Durham (A Dorothy Martin Mystery Book 23) by [Jeanne M. Dams]How can Dorothy Martin clear an elderly woman of murder, when she can’t remember if she did it or not?

American Anglophile Dorothy Martin and her husband, retired chief constable Alan Nesbit, are enjoying a pleasant, albeit rain-soaked, stay in the historic university city of Durham with their old friend David Tregarth. Castle tours and cathedral services fill their days as they wander up and down the steep, cobbled lanes of the medieval city. But the holiday comes to an abrupt halt when David’s elderly great-aunt is accused of the murder of a fellow patient at her nursing home.

How could a frail dementia sufferer commit such a terrible deed? Dorothy is determined to prove Aunt Amanda’s innocence, and launches into an unofficial investigation. But as she and David navigate their way amongst reckless students, inefficient police work and witnesses who have lost the ability to remember, the investigation soon becomes as twisty, slippery and treacherous as the damp cobblestones outside . . .  (Amazon)

The Corpse with the Crystal Skull (The Cait Morgan Mysteries)
by Cathy Ace

Seriously, if you can unravel the tangle of lies, betrayals, government secrets, missing papers and, well, what the crystal skull has to do with it all, before the clever Poirot-like denouement by the protagonist (who has seemed to be the most confused all along), you are a better chair-side detective than I am! Oh, and that locked room murder solution? Ve-r-r-y clever indeed!
~Here’s How It Happened

Welsh Canadian globetrotting sleuth, and professor of criminal psychology, Cait Morgan, is supposed to be “celebrating” her fiftieth birthday in Jamaica with her ex-cop husband Bud Anderson. But when the body of the luxury estate’s owner is discovered locked inside an inaccessible tower, Cait and her fellow guests must work out who might have killed him – even if his murder seems impossible. Could the death of the man who hosted parties in the 1960s attended by Ian Fleming and Noël Coward be somehow linked to treasure the legendary Captain Henry Morgan might have buried at the estate? Or to the mission Bud and his secret service colleagues have been sent to the island to undertake?

PRAISE FOR THE CAIT MORGAN MYSTERIES

“…touches of Christie or Marsh but with a bouquet of Kinsey Millhone.” —The Globe and Mail

“A sparkling, well-plotted, and quite devious mystery…” —The Hamilton Spectator

“…a sympathetic amateur detective, a locked-room mystery, a small cast of colourful suspects, loving descriptions of food and drink, and a few red herrings thrown our way…with a nod to a fresh literary or filmic artifice in each novel in the series…” – Crime Fiction Lover

Born and raised in Wales, now-Canadian Cathy Ace is the author of the Cait Morgan Mysteries, featuring her Welsh Canadian criminology professor sleuth who travels the world tripping over corpses, and The WISE Enquiries Agency Mysteries, featuring a quartet of female PIs, working from a Welsh stately home. Both series are traditional, entertaining, and have been well reviewed.

Review of Return to Sender

Return To Sender
A Mail Carrier Cozy Mystery, Book #4
Tonya Kappes
5 Stars

53250004. sx318 Synopsis:

“Romance, a lovable bunch of eccentrics, and a collection of recipes with murder most foul.”
–Kirkus

“Scrumptious… Fans of culinary cozies will have fun.”
–Publishers Weekly

“A sweet Southern mystery with a delightful plot and quirky characters who quickly make you feel at home.”
–San Francisco Book Review

Bernadette Butler has a penchant for solving murders while keeping her ear low to the ground listening to gossip while on her mail carrier route.

Bernie tries to deliver a return to sender package and a certified letter to a local man and finds him dead.

When the death turns up suspicious, Bernie uses her amateur sleuthing skills along with the gossipy help of the Front Porch Ladies to cross reference who exactly in their small southern town stamped out the victim. (Goodreads)

Review:

Whenever you pick up a book written by this author, you know you are in for a real treat. They have a warm southern setting, engaging characters, an intriguing mystery and plenty of humor.

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Bernie and her friend, Iris, go way back and there is nothing that they would not do for the other. It was really great to get to spend some time with Bernie’s new granddaughter, she is one happy Mawmaw. Her and Mac, her longtime friend, have some issues to work through but I think they are okay. When someone turns up dead, Bernie, with the help of Iris and the Front Porch Ladies, works at solving the mystery. And when they are on the case, you never know what will happen.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the story, I felt like I was right there watching all of the action taking place. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The mystery was well plotted and although I was pretty sure who the killer was, it did not detract from my enjoyment.

I would highly recommend this book, and series, to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. Grab a copy and enjoy.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

Review of For Pete’s Sake

For Pete’s Sake
A Pet Psychic Mystery, Book #4
Shannon Esposito
5 Stars

32672062. sy475 Synopsis:

A picture perfect wedding in paradise…what could possibly go wrong?

Pet boutique owner and reluctant pet psychic, Darwin Winters, is looking forward to watching her best friend and business partner, Sylvia, say “I do” to the man of her dreams. But when their wedding photographer turns up dead on the big day—and Sylvia’s superstitious mother believes his heart attack is a sign their marriage will be cursed—Sylvia’s dream wedding quickly becomes a nightmare.

Darwin only has a week to help her detective boyfriend prove the photographer’s death was not from natural causes before Sylvia’s family jets back home to Portugal, and the wedding is off for good.

As more than a few suspects come into focus—including Peter’s model clients, a rival photographer and the director of an animal shelter being investigated for fraud—time is running out. With just one clue from the photographer’s orphaned Yorkie pup to go on, can Darwin help save Sylvia’s wedding and capture a killer? Or will both justice and Sylvia’s wedding cake go unserved? (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well developed and well rounded. Sylvia, Darwin’s best friend and business partner, is getting married, That is, until her photographer is killed before he can do his job. Now Sylvia’s marriage is on hold because her mother will not give her blessing because she feels the murder is the work of the devil and the marriage is doomed. So Darwin has her work cut out for her, solving the murder within a week. With the help of her boyfriend, Will, who is in law enforcement, they will do what it takes to catch the culprit. There is a paranormal aspect to this book and I thought it added a lot to the story.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions kept me engaged throughout the whole book. The writing style flows smoothly and the book was a quick easy read. The mystery was intriguing and well plotted, and I did not figure out the suspect until it was revealed at the end.

I would recommend this book, and series, to anyone who enjoys a well plotted paranormal cozy. I will be reading the next one very soon.

A Claw-some Affair (MEOW FOR MURDER Book 3) by [Addison Moore, Bellamy Bloom]A highly inaccurate psychic. A grumpy writer. And a corpse. Welcome to Starry Falls. Running from the mob can be murder.

Confession. I’m no psychic. But I can sort of see the future—albeit not accurately. And you better believe, I’ve never let that little detail stop me from prognosticating my way into a pickle. So when I ticked off the mob, the feds, and my wily ex, I decided to take my Uncle Vinny’s advice and start over with a new name and new hair color while relying on my old shtick—getting my psychic wires crossed and putting myself in danger.

Fall is in the air, and to celebrate there’s a masquerade ball at the Mortimer manor where socialites and dapper men abound. But when someone drops dead in the middle of the dance floor, fingers are pointed at everyone—including the deceased.

Shep is as ornery as ever. Whoever keeps sending me those threatening notes has grown far more brazen, and my insights to the future have not only increased, but I’ve just seen a glimpse of something that I want no part of. With my luck—that will be the only vision that comes to fruition just the way it’s threatened to.
