Synopsis:

Chelsea’s family life is pretty complicated. For starters, the family photo that she’s been carrying for her whole life has been a mystery in itself!
Before she can dig into her past, the present has taken a shocking turn… Chelsea finds a dead body in the pond and sitting on the shore is a bucket of flowers.
The more she learns about the dead man, the more she realizes he’s tied up in the knotted web of her own past. As the clues start to surface, Chelsea wonders if she’s better off leaving this one to the police.
Then a letter arrives threatening everything she ever loved. When the flowers begin to arrive, she realizes she can’t stop now or someone close to her will pay the ultimate consequence. (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. I really enjoy the friendship between Chelsea and Tilly, you can tell that they really care about each. And Emma is very cute and adds some comic relief during the book. Chelsea has to figure who the dead man is, what connection he has to her and who killed him. She is afraid that it might involve her sister, that she has not even met yet.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I could picture the farm and all of the animals in my mind’s eye, and I liked what I saw. The mystery was well plotted and intriguing and there were enough suspects to make it interesting.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. This is a great series and one I really enjoy reading.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, the new chocolate shop on Main Street couldn’t have opened at a better time. But when Tamsyn, Sybil, and Cass see what’s for sale there, they start to suspect there’s a new witch in town. One that might be up to no good.

Before they can figure out if the newcomer’s magic is as dark as her luscious truffles, the chocolate maker goes missing, leaving a bewitched and befuddled Noah as the prime suspect. When members of the magical community start dropping into trances and a mysterious shining disk appears above Pinecroft Cove, Tamsyn has to fit all the puzzle pieces together before it’s too late. She just wishes someone had at least shown her the picture on the box.

One thing is for sure, all the modern troubles have a single source: a madwoman from a century ago, who also happens to be Tamsyn’s great-great grandmother. A trip to the past may be the only way to fix the present and restore balance to Pinecroft Cove.

When faced with a new kind of magic, will the forces Tamsyn is up against be too strong for her to overcome?

It’s springtime in Charlie’s hometown and love is in the air. Finally.

While Charlie is enjoying her relationship with her hunky detective boyfriend, Marge tries out online dating. And what she gets is the mother of all dates. One that starts out in a too-good-to-be-true promising way and ends up in disaster. It really was too good to be true.

What’s left is a new murder case and a new client. Bad for Marge, good for business. It’s time for CMC Services to step in.

Risky Whiskey (Bohemia Bartenders Mysteries Book 1) by [Lucy Lakestone]Stirring up trouble in New Orleans …

Eager to shake up her drinks and her life, mixologist Pepper Revelle jumps at an invitation to join the elite Bohemia Bartenders. Leader Neil thinks she’ll be the perfect advance gal for his team at a colorful cocktail convention in her hometown of New Orleans, but the job turns out to be more bananas than a drunk monkey. Setting up the key tasting for their distiller client, she and Neil discover their whiskey has gone dangerously bad. But how? And was this shocking poisoning more than an accident?

As Pepper and Neil try to figure out what happened, keep the drinks flowing and help distiller Dash Reynolds survive the weekend, they find themselves the target of increasingly scary attacks. Maybe it’s the danger, or maybe it’s the drinks, but Pepper also can’t help an inconvenient attraction to cocktail nerd Neil as they stir up trouble and try to figure out who’s out to get them — before they’re sliced and squeezed like a lemon twist in a Sazerac.

Risky Whiskey is the first book in the Bohemia Bartenders Mysteries, funny whodunits with a dash of romance set in a convivial collective of cocktail lovers, eccentrics and mixologists. Skin Deep (Siobhan O'Brien Book 1) by [Sung J. Woo]Korean-American adoptee Siobhan O’Brien has spent much of her life explaining her name and her family to strangers, but a more pressing problem is whether to carry on the PI agency that her dead boss unexpectedly left to her. Easing into middle age, Siobhan would generally rather have a glazed donut than a romance, but when an old friend asks Siobhan to find her daughter who has disappeared from her dorm, the rookie private detective’s search begins at Llewellyn College.
A women’s institution of higher learning in upstate New York, Llewellyn, for the first time in its two-hundred-year history, has opened its doors to male students.  Fringe group The Womyn of Llewellyn are furious, but their ex-fashion-model president declares they have little choice due to financial shortfalls.  But if that’s true, where did she get the money to build a brand new science center, and why is it under 24/7 surveillance by the town cops?
As Siobhan delves deeper into the search for her friend’s daughter, she encounters politely dangerous men in white turtlenecks, vegan cooking that might kill her, possibly deadly yoga poses, and a woman named Cleopatra who’s got more issues than National Geographic. This first in a new series introduces an endearing P.I. heroine in the tradition of classic female detectives like Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone and Sara Paretsky’s V.I. Warshawski readers won’t be able to put down.  (Amazon)

Because being a PI apparently means never being on vacation, Sarah Booth and her friends must now find a way to resurrect the truth from a list of suspects as long as the River Jordan, reveal the devil in disguise, and—if they’re lucky—find a moment to enjoy a few chocolate bunnies before more bodies pile up like pillars of salt.  (Amazon)

Review of A Walk Along The Beach

A Walk Along The Beach
Debbie Macomber
5 Stars

52491135. sy475 Synopsis:

Two sisters must learn from each other’s strengths and trust in the redeeming power of love in a touching new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber.

The Lakey sisters are perfect opposites. After their mother died and their father was lost in grief, Willa had no choice but to raise her sister, Harper, and their brother, Lucas. Then, as an adult, she put her own life on hold to nurse Harper through a terrifying illness. Now that Harper is better and the sisters are living as roommates, Willa has realized her dream of running her own bakery and coffee shop, bringing her special brand of caretaking to the whole Oceanside community.

Harper, on the other hand, is always on the go. Overcoming a terrible illness has given her a new lease on life, and she does not intend to waste it. When Harper announces her plan to summit Mount Rainier, Willa fears she may be pushing herself too far. Harper, for her part, urges Willa to stop worrying and do something outside of her comfort zone—like taking a chance on love with a handsome new customer.

Sean O’Malley is as charming as he is intriguing—a freelance photographer whose assignments take him to the ends of the earth. Soon Willa’s falling for him in a way that is both exciting and terrifying. But life has taught Willa to hedge her bets, and she wonders whether the potential heartache is worth the risk.

Life has more challenges in store for them all. But both sisters will discover that even in the darkest moments, family is everything. (Goodreads)

Review:

Willa has been a mother to her sister, Harper, ever since their mother died. Her dad fell apart and started drinking, so Willa picked up the responsibility for her sister. She has gotten Harper through cancer, and it seems like things might be working out. But Willa cannot help but being worried about Harper and prays that everything will be good from here on out.

Willa owns her own bakery/coffee shop and it is working out well. She has met Sean, a customer, that seems to be interested in her. She is definitely interested in him and they start hanging out together. But his job takes him away a lot and she has a hard time adjusting to that, and does not know if it will work out.

When tragic and traumatic events start happening, it will take all of Willa’s strength and faith to get through it. It will not only effect
Willa but all of the characters in the book.

This book made me laugh, cry and appreciate all of my loved ones. This book is very emotional and very well written. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well written women’s contemporary book. I know when I get a book from this author I am in for a good read.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Random House Publishing Group-Ballantine, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

New Releases For The Week Of July 19th,2020–Part 2

Here is a list of some of the new releases for the week of July 19th, 2020. I am going to divide the list into 4 days because there are so very many of them for the week. Today is the second day of my list for this week. Hope you find some selections for your weekly reading. Enjoy and happy reading.

Bound by Fate: Celestial Academy: The Witch Book 2 by [Tegan Maher]My name’s Shelby Flynn, witch, college student, and hot-tempered redhead, and I’m in way over my head.

I never set out to save the world, but it seems that’s the course Destiny set for me when an angel gifted me with magical powers beyond anything I could have ever imagined. Not that I mind being able to control the elements or blow things up with my mind, but a heads up about my future would have been fantastic. Instead, I fell through a magical doorway straight into the library of a secret academy ran by a fae and guarded by a three-headed hellhound and a talking, fire-breathing monkey named Stu. I realize how far out it sounds, but trust me – I couldn’t make it up if I tried.

Now, a coven of dark witches bent on destroying the source of white magic has stolen the Scepter of Life, and I only have six days to recover the remaining components or else they’ll succeed. I’m not one to walk away from a fight, but this time, it’s not about saving myself or even my family – the fate of the entire world lies squarely on my shoulders.

My task comes with a heavy price tag. Not only do I have to save the people I care about, I have to lie to them while I do it because secrecy is the Celestial Academy’s biggest advantage. My long-term boyfriend suspects I’m cheating, and my best friend is stuck in the middle, trying to keep my “real” life from falling apart while I’m off fighting demons, evil witches, and whatever else goes bump in the night.

Am I up for it? I’m not sure, but I have no choice. The elements are mine to control, and I have an ancient Fae and a powerful – and hot – wizard by my side. That will have to be enough.

After all, I’m a Flynn witch, and nobody messes with me or mine.  (Amazon)

Paris Is Always a Good Idea by [Jenn McKinlay]One of Popsugar’s Best New Books for Summer 2020

A thirty-year-old woman retraces her gap year through Ireland, France, and Italy to find love—and herself—in this hilarious and heartfelt novel.

It’s been seven years since Chelsea Martin embarked on her yearlong postcollege European adventure. Since then, she’s lost her mother to cancer and watched her sister marry twice, while Chelsea’s thrown herself into work, becoming one of the most talented fundraisers for the American Cancer Coalition, and with the exception of one annoyingly competent coworker, Jason Knightley, her status as most successful moneymaker is unquestioned.

When her introverted mathematician father announces he’s getting remarried, Chelsea is forced to acknowledge that her life stopped after her mother died and that the last time she can remember being happy, in love, or enjoying her life was on her year abroad. Inspired to retrace her steps—to find Colin in Ireland, Jean Claude in France, and Marcelino in Italy—Chelsea hopes that one of these three men who stole her heart so many years ago can help her find it again.

From the start of her journey nothing goes as planned, but as Chelsea reconnects with her old self, she also finds love in the very last place she expected.  (Amazon)

Brenda Rivers and her staff are preparing for the bi-annual meeting and luncheon of the local Scribble Society at Sheffield Bed and Breakfast. Its President, Sarah Perch has her hands full. She is particular about everything running smoothly. Besides the luncheon-meeting, her son Professor Jack Perch is due to arrive for the weekend from Kansas. Guests begin to arrive, and Allie Williams gets everyone checked in while Brenda meets with Mrs. Perch to discuss last minute details. The local Authors are looking forward to presenting their works in progress for the usual critiquing, the main purpose of the club.

Everything is running smoothly until pompous Duncan Griffen, who specializes in writing poetry, reads several stanzas he has added to an ongoing poem. He resents anyone who criticizes his writings which intimidates the others from speaking up with honesty. All except Sarah Perch, that is. She graciously tells him his latest style does not match the rest of the poem. He is heartsick over her criticism. He has been in love with the local Librarian for years but has never had the courage to make his move. Sarah determined long ago to never remarry after her husband’s unexpected death.

One of the guests at Sheffield Bed and Breakfast has her eye out for Sarah’s handsome son Jack. He pays little attention to Hilda Picard which does not set well with her. Sarah obviously disapproves of the exotic young woman’s mannerisms who is obnoxious trying to attract Jack.

Cole Barnes has a deep secret to hide from everyone he meets. He befriends Jack for a morning of fishing on the Atlantic. When Sarah Perch goes missing sometime in her walk from the bed and breakfast to her cottage, Cole attempts to distract Jack from his worry about his missing mother.

Brenda is determined to find the beloved Librarian. Detective Mac Rivers organizes the people of Sweetfern Harbor who are determined to find her. When Sarah’s lifeless body is discovered in a remote pasture where milkweed grows, Brenda vows to find her killer. Lineage Most Lethal: An Ancestry Detective Mystery by [S. C. Perkins]

In S. C. Perkins’s Lineage Most Lethal, the captivating second mystery in the Ancestry Detective series, Texas genealogist Lucy Lancaster grapples with a mystery rooted in World War II and espionage.

It’s the week before New Year’s Eve and genealogist Lucy Lancaster is ready to mix work and play at the beautiful Hotel Sutton, enjoying herself while finalizing the presentation for her latest client, hotel heiress Pippa Sutton.

Freshly arrived at the hotel—and determined not to think about Special Agent Ben Turner, who went radio silent on her after one date—Lucy is stopped in her tracks when a strange man comes staggering toward her. She barely has time to notice his weak, sweaty appearance before he presses a classic Montblanc pen onto her hand, gasps, “Keep them safe,” and collapses at her feet, dead.

When Lucy shows the fountain pen to her grandfather, an avid collector and World War II veteran, she’s in for another shock. Not only does Grandpa recognize the Montblanc, he also reveals a secret: he was an Allied spy during the war and the pen is both a message regarding one of his wartime missions and the key to reading a microdot left by the dead man.

On the microdot is a series of ciphers, some decrypted to form names. Could they be the descendants of Grandpa’s fellow spies? When two from the list end up murdered—including the chef at the Hotel Sutton—and Grandpa’s life is put in jeopardy, Lucy’s sure she’s right. And with Lucy’s and Pippa’s names possibly on the list, too, she’s got to uncover the past to protect those in the present.

With a secret Allied mission, old grievances, and traitors hiding behind every corner, Lucy must use her research skills to trace the list’s World War II ancestors and connect the dots to find a killer in their midst—a killer who’s determined to make sure some lineages end once and for all.  (Amazon)

To clear her name, Ivy starts digging up clues. The former HR exec is no stranger to interviewing, and Keats is a dog who loves a job. As she juggles sleuthing with getting the inn ready to launch, she almost reaches the end of her tether. With her beloved farm’s very future on the line can she solve the case before the killer comes after her next?

Dogcatcher in the Rye is perfect for animal-lovers, and anyone who likes curling up with a fun, fast-paced cozy mystery. (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Ivy is a hard working smart lady who is so excited to be running a farm themed inn, and she will do anything she can to be sure that it is a success. Even if that includes finding a killer. Between her and her dog, Keats, she is determined to find that killer and bring him to justice.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions kept me engaged throughout the entire book. The mystery was well plotted and there were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider. I was not completely sure who the killer was until the reveal.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I really like this series and I cannot wait to read the next one in the series.

Review of The Finders

The Finders
Mace Reid K-9 Mysteries, Book #1
Jeffrey B Burton
5 Stars

51163725. sx318 sy475 Synopsis:

What happens when the hunter becomes the hunted?

Jeffrey B. Burton’s The Finders marks the beginning of a fast-paced new mystery series featuring a heroic golden retriever cadaver dog named Vira and her handler, Mason Reid.

Mason “Mace” Reid lives on the outskirts of Chicago and specializes in human remains detection. He trains dogs to hunt for the dead. Reid’s coming off a taxing year—mourning the death of a beloved springer spaniel as well as the dissolution of his marriage. He adopts a rescue dog with a mysterious past—a golden retriever named Vira. And when Reid begins training Vira as a cadaver dog, he comes to realize just how special the newest addition to his family truly is…

Suddenly, Reid and his prize pupil find themselves hurled into a taxing murder case, which will push them to their very limits. Paired with determined Chicago Police Officer Kippy Gimm, Mace must put all his trust in Vira’s abilities to thwart a serial killer who has now set his sights on Mace himself. (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Mace trains dogs for all sorts of jobs, but his specialty is training dogs to hunt for dead bodies. He has adopted a new dog named Vira and she has an uncanny ability and is very good at her job. He has other dogs too and they all have distinct personalities and have jobs to do. I enjoyed reading about all of the dogs and how they all got along. Mace teams up with Chicago police officer Kippy Gimm to figure out the serial killer that has been creating havoc.

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly through their actions and words. The author’s descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning and pulled me along at a breakneck speed. There was plenty of suspense contained in this book and I found myself hesitating to keep reading at times because I was afraid what would happen. I was very surprised who the killer ended up being, and that was great.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. And if you love animals you will definitely want to read this one. I am looking forward to reading the next book when it is released.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, St. Martin’s Press, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
