Agatha Award–winning and national bestselling author Daryl Wood Gerber returns with a dark new novel of suspense . . .

An adoring fan and a string of murders: a demented show of love that leaves no one safe . . .

Unsure of where else to turn, she enlists the help of novice private investigator Aspen Adams. No sooner does Aspen begin digging into who sent the macabre note than another murder occurs, followed by another note, and she soon realizes she’s up against a ruthless and deranged killer.

Working with scant clues and a puzzling array of potential suspects, Aspen is determined to unearth the elusive connection between the victims and her client. But as the body count grows and the murderer remains a mystery to both her and the police, Aspen discovers she’s gotten closer to the killer than she ever imagined, and now she must risk everything she holds dear to stop the killings, including her own life . . .

About the Author:

Agatha Award–winning and nationally bestselling author Daryl Wood Gerber is the author of the Cookbook Nook Mysteries, the French Bistro Mysteries, the Cheese Shop Mysteries (as Avery Aames), and stand-alone suspense thrillers. Little known facts about Daryl are that she’s jumped out of a perfectly good airplane, has hitchhiked around Ireland by herself, and has appeared on an episode of Murder, She Wrote. She loves to read, cook, and golf, and has a frisky Goldendoodle named Sparky who keeps her in line! (Amazon)

The characters are well developed and well rounded. Aspen is a new private investigator, and what she lacks in experience she makes up for enthusiasm. With the help of her aunt(for moral support) and her niece, Aspen must figure out who the deranged killer is and stop them before they kill even more.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me in from the very beginning. The author created a lot of tension and intrigue with her written word, which is not an easy thing to do. I had to use all of my sleuthing skills and I still was not sure until the reveal.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted suspense mystery. I have to go back and read the first book in the series.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Beyond The Page Publishing, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Can Verity lay everything to rest before a mysterious murderer reads her last rites?

Rating: Clean and Wholesome
Paranormal Cozy Mystery Romance (with a cute pet skunk!) (Amazon)

The characters are well rounded and well developed. It does not matter is Verity is helping the living or the dead, she will give it her all. Even if it causes trouble with Ellis, her boyfriend. Hopefully they will both be able to work things out and get back to being a couple in love. Beau, her ex and Ellis brother, showed a more caring side and really came through for Verity when she needed it. We also get to see a softer side of Frankie, but do not tell him. And as usual, Lucy stole the show, she is just so cute.

The writing style flows smoothly and it was a quick, easy read. The author’s descriptive writing pulled me into the story from the very beginning and through much of the story I felt like I was right there, watching all of the action taking place. The mystery was well plotted and I was not sure who the killer was until it was revealed at the end.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. Anytime you can spend time with Verity, Frankie and Lucy, you know it will be a good time.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

The Great Hotel Murder by [Vincent Starrett, Lyndsay Faye]

In a grand Chicago hotel, a mysterious death sets a puzzling whodunnit in motion

When a New York banker is discovered dead from an apparent morphine overdose in a Chicago hotel, the circumstances surrounding his untimely end are suspicious to say the least. The dead man had switched rooms the night before with a stranger he met and drank with in the hotel bar. And before that, he’d registered under a fake name at the hotel, told his drinking companion a fake story about his visit to the Windy City, and seemingly made no effort to contact the actress, performing in a local show, to whom he was married. All of which is more than enough to raise eyebrows among those who discovered the body.

Enter theatre critic and amateur sleuth Riley Blackwood, a friend of the hotel’s owner, who endeavors to untangle this puzzling tale as discreetly as possible. But when another detective working the case, whose patron is unknown, is thrown from a yacht deck during a party by an equally unknown assailant, the investigation makes a splash among Chicago society. And then several of the possible suspects skip town, leaving Blackwood struggling to determine their guilt or innocence—and their whereabouts.

Reissued for the first time in over eighty years, The Great Hotel Murder is a devilishly complex whodunnit with a classical aristocratic setting, sure to please Golden Age mystery fans of all stripes. In 1935, the story was adapted for a film of the same name.  (Amazon)

Penned In
Farm-To-Fork Mystery, Book #4.5
Lynn Cahoon
5 Stars

Penned In (A Farm-to-Fork Mystery) by [Lynn Cahoon]Synopsis:

Angie Turner, chef at Idaho’s finest farm-to-table restaurant, has organized a team-building event at a haunted prison, only to find a real-life murderer in their midst. . . .

Contented employees make for a successful restaurant, which is why the County Seat’s crew goes on a quarterly out-of-office meeting. This time, the location is the Old Idaho Penitentiary near the Boise Foothills, a prison brimming with ghostly lore. The lock-in features actors role-playing as guards, fascinating prison stories . . . and an unscripted murder.

Who sentenced one of the faux guards to a very authentic death? Angie, her boyfriend, and the County Seat gang are locked in with a killer—excellent motivation for a little sleuthing. Between ghostly apparitions and flesh-and-blood suspects, Angie’s plate is full, but will her luck, and her life, hold out until the gates reopen at dawn?

Praise for Lynn Cahoon’s Tourist Trap Mysteries

“Murder, dirty politics, pirate lore, and a hot police detective: Guidebook to Murder has it all! A cozy lover’s dream come true.”
—Susan McBride, author of The Debutante Dropout Mysteries

“Lynn Cahoon has created an absorbing, good fun mystery in Mission to Murder.”
—Fresh Fiction

The characters are well developed and well rounded. For their quarterly team building trip, they decide to go to the Old Idaho Penitentiary. They are going to spend the night in the prison, which is said to be haunted. What could possibly go wrong? Angie and her employees are locked in the prison with a killer and they will have to solve the mystery before the prison door closes for good.

The author is very talented in her descriptive and these descriptions helped me get a clear picture in my mind. The writing style flows smoothly and the novella is a quick easy read. The mystery was well plotted and not easily solved.

I would highly recommend this whole series to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I cannot wait to see what adventure awaits them next.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Review of Die Me A River

Die Me A River
Welcome Back To Scumble River, Book #2
Denise Swanson
5 Stars

The chips are down in Scumble River

School psychologist Skye Denison-Boyd had hoped that her maternity leave would be at least a little relaxing, but when she and her husband, Wally, meet with the priest to discuss their newborn twins’ christening, an explosion at the nearby bowling alley rocks the rectory. And although the business was closed at the time of the blast, there’s a body inside.

As police chief, Wally is inevitably drawn into the investigation, which seems to indicate that foul play is afoot again in Scumble River, and Skye can’t help but do a bit of her own sleuthing. But the clues come fast and furious, ranging from an odd new stranger in town to animosity toward the gambling machines that had recently been installed at the bowling alley, and Skye finds herself wondering if this could be the puzzle that stumps her for good.

New York Times bestselling author Denise Swanson has penned another hit for cozy fans with Die Me a River, the latest installment in her beloved Welcome Back to Scumble River mystery series. (Goodreads)

The characters are well developed and well rounded. I like how strong and independent Skye is, but she still has insecurities, and that makes her seem more realistic to me. I really enjoy reading about the relationship between Wally and Skye, they are such a great couple. You can tell how much love and respect they have for each other, it is so refreshing. The secondary characters added a lot to the story and I really enjoyed spending with all of them.

The writing style flows smoothly and defined the characters very clearly by their words and actions. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and this pulled me into the story from the very beginning of the book. The mystery was well plotted and not easily solved. I would not have even cared if there was no mystery to solve, I was enjoying spending time with Wally, Skye and the twins, but the mystery added to the story.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. Both of the books in this series were really great, as were the older books written in this series, from many years ago.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Sourcebooks Landmark, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Spotlight–The Puccini Connection

British expat, Josie Monroe, returns to the idyllic village of Milkwood and finds herself chief suspect in a family murder. Surrounded by cricket greens, duck ponds and lies, Josie must discover the culprit if she wishes to return to the US and Lady Belle DeCorcy is just the pal to help her.

Josie is a down-to-earth, classical music-loving pianist. Belle is a flighty, beautiful and slightly unhinged debutante, making the two amateur sleuths an unlikely and comically inept, team. As if Josie doesn’t have enough problems, she is also dealing with the “Witches of Milkwood,” an elderly trio convinced that Josie is the murderer and that Belle is one sandwich short of a picnic.

Living with a cantankerous cat named Elgar and her aunt’s handsome, but seemingly untrustworthy, lodger, Josie is also coming to terms with resurging feelings for her childhood sweetheart, Detective Inspector Adam Ward. Luckily, tea and tenacity will see her through, even if every time Josie hears Puccini she risks discovering another body.

The Puccini Connection is a cozy English murder mystery with a classical music-loving amateur female sleuth in a picturesque English village with quirky, lovable characters and an extremely grumpy cat. No cliffhangers, gore, graphic violence, sex or overtly strong language.

The characters are well rounded and well developed. The Laundry Club girls are back to help Mae figure out who killed an Olympic quality kayaker. The killer could be any number of people at the campsite and it will not be easy to nab the killer.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I really felt like I was right there with Mae, trying to solve the murder. And she is also very talented in portraying southern life and beliefs. The mystery was well plotted and kept me guessing until the very end.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I enjoyed spending time with Mae and all of her friends, and I am sure you will too.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.
