Burning Secrets: A Whispering Pines Mystery, Book 11 by [Shawn McGuire]Things are heating up in Whispering Pines, and it’s not just the weather.

Sheriff Jayne O’Shea is on edge. Hopeful applicants have taken over the commons area, all of them begging to become residents. Villagers who left long ago have returned, causing an uproar among the locals. The slow burn feud between the sister witches has reached the boiling point. And her parents are acting just plain weird.

Fortunately, it’s time for the annual Beltane celebration, the last opportunity for everyone to gather before tourists invade the village for the summer. Attendees dance around the Maypole, decorate fairy chairs, weave witch ladders, and nibble Green Man cake. Good, innocent fun.

Except, this year’s fire festival is being held during the driest spring the Northwoods has seen in a decade. And like bees to honey, the event has attracted an arsonist intent on burning the place to the ground one little fire at a time.

Mad Money Murder (Merry Wrath Mysteries Book 16) by [Leslie Langtry]

From USA Today bestselling author Leslie Langtry comes another madcap Merry Wrath mystery that will leave you laughing til it hurts!

When Merry Wrath inherits an urn of cremains, she isn’t sure which is more surprising—that she was now the owner of a body or the fact that her family’s mythical Aunt June actually existed. Besides the urn and the deceased’s collection of lethal pets, from an assassin caterpillar to a deathstalker scorpion, the ex-CIA agent turned Scout Leader also inherits a mystery:

“If you’ve received this, it means that I need you to find out who murdered me.”

With her best friend and five mischievous little Girl Scouts, Merry takes a trip across the state to her aunt’s tiny, rundown hometown of Behold, Iowa. Though, in hindsight, it probably wasn’t the best for the troop to stay at a famous scout camp that has a history of ghosts and aliens. Or to bring the precocious, ten-year old Betty who has started mastering some very sophisticated (and alarming) magic tricks.

Was Aunt June murdered?

Most in Behold think the death was an accident involving June’s pet brown recluse spider, but Merry isn’t so sure. There are far more questions than answers about who Aunt June really was. Between a late-night dash for her life over a high ropes course, and dangerous interactions with deadly critters, Merry needs answers before a killer silences her questions…for good.

Review of Candy Cane Crime

Candy Cane Crime

Amanda Flower
5 Stars

54496529Synopsis:

Fortunately, her beloved Cousin Charlotte is happy to take the Candy Cane Exchange off Bailey’s to-do list. After all, Charlotte has come to Harvest from her conservative home district to find her future outside of her family’s influence. What better way than by taking on the Englisch task of pairing the sweet notes everyone is exchanging with a peppermint treat, just in time for Christmas Eve delivery? But when Charlotte discovers some of those delicious missives are for her, suddenly she’s staking out the festive postbox, hoping to catch her secret admirer in his intriguing tracks . . .

When Charlotte sees something underhanded going on beneath the merrymaking, she enlists the help of Sheriff Deputy Luke Little to find out if her unknown correspondent is none other than the town’s biggest suspect. And the surprising truth about her suitor’s identity has her contemplating leaving her Amish roots behind forever . . . (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Charlotte is still on her Rumspringa and has not made up her mind what she wants to do. When Margot needs help with the Candy Cane Exchange, Charlotte is happy to help. When she finds out that she has a secret admirer who is giving her candy cane. She does not know who is doing it and what it means. But she plans on finding out.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. There were a couple of mysteries for Charlotte to solve, although none involved a dead body.

I would recommend this novella to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. Although it was short, it still had everything that I look for in a cozy mystery. And we even got to spend some time with Jethro, the pig.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Daisy and the Dead (A Murder in Restless Cozy Mystery Book 1) by [Emmy Grace]What do a recovering romance writer, an ornery kitten, and a town full of ghosts have in common?

Unfortunately, until further notice, that would be me.

I was two months late on rent when my father called asking for my help. One of his old timer friends named Big Lou disappeared and, for reasons he refused to divulge, Dad didn’t want the cops involved. There also happened to be an opening at the local newspaper. He didn’t tell me what the job entailed, and I didn’t ask. I just needed to be able to pay my rent, so I packed up my cat and we headed to Restless, South Carolina.

Restless is a small town much like the one I grew up in, only with one not-so-small difference. Restless gets its name from all the restless spirits that haunt the place. In other words, it’s overrun by ghosts.

Yep, you read that right. Ghosts! As if that weren’t bad enough, my car keeps overheating, my neighbor has a penchant for gardening in the nude, and my boss is as suspicious as he is hot. But the real kicker is that the moment I arrive in town, I start hearing voices. Human voices. Only these are coming from my cat. If you think that sounds crazy, just wait until you hear what the dead are planning. It’s enough to keep a girl up at night.

Daisy and the Dead is book one in the Murder in Restless cozy mystery series. Book 2 is coming in November, 2020  (Amazon)

Review:

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. Whether I was sitting on the porch with the Front Porch Ladies or spending time with Iris, my mind’s eye could clearly see it.

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Bernie and Iris are once again trying to figure out a murder mystery because this time Iris is a suspect. It will take all of their sleuthing skills, and then some, to solve this one.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I cannot wait to see what new predicament Bernie and her friends get into next.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

Death, Dismay and Rosé (The Wine Trail Mysteries Book 6) by [J. C. Eaton]When a local historian is found dead, Norrie Ellington has to dig through the clues to prove the cause was not a centuries-old curse but coldblooded murder . . .

It’s rare that the summer solstice and a full moon fall on the same night, but winery manager Norrie Ellington is all too familiar with the curse that supposedly accompanies the event: the death by suffocation of someone in the area. She’s inclined to write the whole thing off as folktale nonsense―until the president of the local historical society is found smothered on that very night. Local law enforcement aren’t quite so superstitious, however, and they’ve pegged a close friend of Norrie’s for the murder.

Determined to discredit the curse and get her friend off the hook, Norrie begins digging into the background of the victim, only to discover that he had no shortage of enemies. And as evidence emerges of his questionable connections and shady dealings, Norrie follows a trail of clues that leads her smack into the racing world at Watkins Glen. She’ll have to shift into overdrive to save her friend, because curse or not, there’s a flesh-and-blood killer dead set on making Norrie the next victim . . .

Twice the Crime This Time (Trailer Park Tales Book 2) by [Maggie Pill]Maggie Pill’s characters seem like people we know: In The Sleuth Sisters Series, it’s siblings we love but can’t always relate to. In the Trailer Park Tales Series, we meet the residents of an RV park in Florida: fussy husbands, smart-aleck wives, grumpy neighbors, conspiracy lovers, and more. The residents of B-Bird Over-55 RV Park are mostly snow-birds, so for months each year they face the joys and irritations of living in tight spaces with people from all over the place. Usually they cope with politeness and good humor, but at times it’s difficult. In the first story, Once Upon a Trailer Park, a murder on the property put residents on alert and one woman in deadly danger.

In this second story of the series, our heroes are presented with two crime threads, one hot and one cold. The cold case is half a century old, which is okay, since many residents remember those days like they were yesterday. In 1967, on a warm night in Nashville, Tennessee, someone committed two brutal murders. It’s reported that person now lives in the park, hiding under a new identity. When local police ask Ron and Julie Rogers to try to find out who it is, they enlist the help of their friends, intending to ask each man in the park where he was on the date the crime occurred.

The other crime is ongoing and more annoyance than concern. Rumor says someone is cruising the streets in the evenings and peeping in windows, but rumor is often wrong. Ignoring the peeper sightings, the sleuths concentrate on finding the eighty-year-old killer. Neck-deep in suspects, they have no idea how dangerous things are going to get for one of them.  (Amazon)

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Callie and her great Aunt Gracie have such a great relationship and you can tell that they love each other deeply. They also love Paisley, the young neighbor who they have been taking care of after her grandmother becomes ill. As is usual with this author, all of the characters become people that you care about and root for.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the book from the very beginning. I felt like I was right there, watching the Halloween activities and spending time with Callie and Cass, Callie’s boyfriend. The mystery was well plotted and kept me engaged throughout the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. It appears as if this series is ending, and the author ended it very well.

Margaritas, mayhem, and murder. Too bad her only defense is a cocktail umbrella.

After some of Karina Cardinal’s recent adventures—her lover Mike Finnegan would call them scrapes, jams, or pickles—she’s more than ready to blow this D.C. pop stand for a short girls’ trip to Mexico. Until Jillian’s roller skate wreck blows their plan out of the water. With Jilly injured and Mike working, her fellow lobbyist Rodrigo volunteers to share some sun, sand, and margaritas in Cancun. It’s tough to relax, though, knowing what’s in her suitcase. A package she promised to hand off to Mrs. Thundermuffin in Mexico.

Mrs. T’s evasive maneuvers around Karina’s questions wave more red flags than a bullfighter, leaving Karina no choice but to take a peek. Okay, so it’s not a kilo of something illegal. It’s an Egyptian death mask that turns out to be a magnet for crooks, conmen, kidnappers, and outright killers.

When the situation explodes into chaos, Karina and Rodrigo are lucky to have friends in the right place—at their backs. But they’re in one hell of a jam. And they could be going home in something tackier than a souvenir t-shirt—more like a body bag.

Each book in the series can be read individually so dive on in! ***Includes RECIPE***

My name is Bizzy Baker, and I can read minds—not every mind, not every time but most of the time and believe me when I say it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

It’s October and Jasper and I just returned from our honeymoon to find the inn playing host to the Haunted Harvest Festival, complete with a pumpkin patch, scare nights, a midway with games, and enough candy to rot your teeth. But a secretive group of women, called the Midnight Maidens, decide to host a little private party of their own on the grounds and the night ends in murder. Throw in the haunted doll collection Georgie had shipped to the inn, and you have the recipe for the spookiest Halloween season that Cider Cove has ever seen. Hold onto your pointed hat—things are about to get terrifying.

Bizzy Baker runs the Country Cottage Inn, has the ability to pry into the darkest recesses of both the human and animal mind, and has just stumbled upon a body. With the help of her kitten, Fish, a mutt named Sherlock Bones and an ornery yet dangerously good looking homicide detective, Bizzy is determined to find the killer.

The Country Cottage Inn is known for its hospitality. Leaving can be murder.
