How to Raise an Elephant: No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (21) (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency Series) by [Alexander McCall Smith]

Ramotswe must balance family obligations with the growing needs of one of Charlie’s pet projects in this latest installment in the cherished No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series.

Precious Ramotswe loves her dependable old van. Yes, sometimes it takes a bit longer to get going now, and it has developed some quirks over the years, but it has always gotten the job done. This time, though, the world–and Charlie–may be asking too much of it, for when he borrows the beloved vehicle he returns it damaged. And, to make matters worse, the interior seems to have acquired an earthy smell that even Precious can’t identify.

But the olfactory issue is not the only mystery that needs solving. Mma Ramotswe is confronted by a distant relative, Blessing, who asks for help with an ailing cousin. The help requested is of a distinctly pecuniary nature, which makes both Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni and Mma Makutsi suspicious. And there is no peace at home, either, as the new neighbors are airing their marital grievances rather loudly. Still, Mma Ramotswe is confident that there are solutions to all of these difficulties, there to be discovered as long as she is led by kindness, grace, and logic, and can rely on the counsel of her friends and loved ones. As Jessica digs deeper to find the connection between the bones and Tad’s murder, everything seems to come back to a mystery that has long plagued Cabot Cove. Review of Talk To The Hoof

Talk To The Hoof

Kate Collins, Book #2

Lisa Shay

5 Stars

A missing woman, a dead body, and two horses with a chilling story…

Kallie Collins, veterinarian and animal communicator, hopes to enjoy a day of riding with friends until a bay mare shows her a vision of a terrified woman. A second horse adds his images of cloaked figures walking through shadow-filled passages.

The visions the two horses share lead to the discovery of a shallow grave near the stable, plunging Kallie into a deadly mystery.

With the suspects multiplying, can Kallie expose the killer before it’s too late and there’s another murder… maybe her own?   (Amazon)

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions brought the book to life in my mind’s eye.  I could picture the stables and horses as I was reading about them, which is great.  The mystery was well plotted  and kept me engaged throughout the entire book.  There were plenty of suspects to consider and clues to sift through.

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Kallie and her two friends, Sam and Gracie, are very close and they really care about each other.  When Kallie and Gracie go to check out Sam’s latest boyfriend at Shady Maple Stables, Kallie gets visions from one of the horses that are at the stable.  I forgot to mention that Kallie is a veterinarian that gets visions from animals.  The vision involves a missing woman and no one knows what happened to her, except maybe her horse.  With the help of Sam and Gracie, Kallie will try to solve the mystery of the missing woman and also a murder.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  And if you like a twist to that cozy, then this is a must read book.  I really like the premise of the book, a vet that gets visions from animals that she encounters.  I really enjoyed this book and I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

Review of Paws For Murder

Paws For Murder
Pet Boutique, Book #1
Annie Knox
5 Stars

Izzy McHale wants her new Trendy Tails Pet Boutique in Merryville, Minnesota, to be the height of canine couture and feline fashions. But at the store’s opening, it turns out it’s a human who’s dressed to kill…

Izzy’s own beloved pets are dressed to the nines for the grand opening of Trendy Tails. Feisty feline Jinx is large and in charge, and happy mutt Packer is lapping up the attention. Izzy and her best friend Rena have their hands full meeting Merryville’s menagerie and serving tasty pupcakes and kitty canapes from their “barkery.” The last thing they need is the town’s local activist, Sherry Harper, scaring off customers and getting tongues wagging by picketing the event.

The two manage to stop Sherry’s protest in its tracks, but the trouble for Trendy Tails is just beginning. Sherry is found murdered in back of the shop, and Rena is immediately named as the lead suspect. Now Izzy and her furry friends have a new pet project—collaring a killer.

The characters are well developed and well rounded. Izzy has opened her new business, Trendy Tails Pet Boutique. When her plans for a happily-ever-after falls apart, she decides to make pet clothes and tasty treats. With the help of her friend, Rena, and the financial backing of her Aunt, she is open for business. But before the treats are baked, there is a murder in her alley and Rena is the prime suspect. With the help of Sean, an old boyfriend who is now a lawyer, she knows she has to find the killer before it is too late. The characters were engaging and they brought a lot to the story. I enjoyed all of the animals too, they had their own story to tell.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions brought the story to life in my mind. The writing style flowed smoothly and the book was a quick easy read. The mystery was well plotted and not easily solved, which is how I like my mysteries.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Eggnog, Extortion & Evergreens
A Camper & Criminals Cozy, Book #14
Tonya Kappes
5 Stars

Welcome to Normal, Kentucky~ where nothing is normal. A Campers and Criminal Mystery Series is another brainchild of USA Today Bestselling Author Tonya Kappes. If you love her quirky southern characters and small town charm with a mystery to solve, you’re going to love her new cozy mystery series!

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly through their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions added a lot to the story. I could feel Hank’s worry and angst over Mae being in the hospital and I could also feel the excitement over a new relationship that is happening. The mystery is well plotted and moved along at a steady pace, and it was not easily solved.

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Mae has such good friends and they will always help each other, no matter what. We should all be so fortunate to have friends like the Laundry Club Ladies. And her and Hank are getting really well, even though she continues to stick her nose in where it does not belong.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I wonder what Mae will find herself into next.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

Death Gets Cozy by [J.R. Ripley]

New from bestselling author JR Ripley!

Anthony Mulish believes he’s the world’s greatest author. Unfortunately, the world and his long-suffering agent disagree. Out of frustration, he’s written a cozy mystery novel under a pen name. To everyone’s surprise (especially his agent’s) and his chagrin, it’s a bestseller.

Now Anthony is being toasted as the special guest of honor at a mystery conference. Anthony being Anthony, he rubs everyone the wrong way, especially the other authors – anyone of whom would probably love to see him dead. Then one of the attendees is brutally murdered. Anthony vows to find the killer. He’s already successfully solved a murder mystery in a bestselling novel so how hard can it be?

Death Gets Cozy is an affectionate spoof/satire/sendup? of mysteries in general and cozies in particular. I wrote a novel many years ago called SKULLS OF SEDONA of which Library Journal wrote: Readers who enjoyed Sharon McCrumb’s Bimbos of the Death Sun will also get a kick out of this.

The second thing happened at a recent Malice Domestic banquet whereat one of my tablemates brought up Sharon’s book. This got the old gears turning. I had not yet read the Bimbos book and made it a point to do so when I returned home.
I decided to write this story, the story of the most pompous, annoying, blowhard, takes-himself-too-seriously author that I could devise. Okay, maybe I just looked in the mirror and wrote what I saw…I’ll let you, the readers, decide. Remember, I am a cozy writer too. That fun I’m poking, I’m poking at myself.

A sense of humor, especially directed at oneself, I believe is essential. In fact, I also believe Amazon Essentials has them for sale at only $2.99/yard. So, if you haven’t decided to bolt (there’s a bad pun in here somewhere—dig around, you’ll find it), read on! (Amazon)

London is searching for a more romantic, unscripted and exciting life that she feels sure exists out there somewhere.

London is elated: the European river towns are small, historic and charming. She gets to see a new port every night, gets to sample an endless array of new cuisine and meet a stream of interesting people. It is a traveler’s dream, and it is anything but predictable.

Jazz Fest is in full swing in The Big Easy, but PI Franki Amato is singing the blues. It’s the spring of 1887, and Rose Gallagher is finally coming into her own. She and her partner Thomas are working together better than ever, and mostly managing to push aside romantic feelings for one another. Mostly.

Things are almost too good to be true—so Rose is hardly surprised when Theodore Roosevelt descends on them like a storm cloud, hiring them for a mysterious job out west. A series of strange occurrences in the Badlands surrounding his ranch has Roosevelt convinced something supernatural is afoot.

It began with livestock disappearing from the range, their bodies later discovered torn apart by something monstrously powerful. Now people are dying, too. Meanwhile, a successful prospector has gone missing, and rumors about his lost stash of gold have attracted treasure hunters from far and wide – but they keep disappearing, too. To top it all off, this past winter, a mysterious weather phenomenon devastated the land, leaving the locals hungry, broke, and looking for someone to blame.

With tensions mounting and the body count rising, Roosevelt fears a single spark will be all it takes to set the Badlands aflame. There aren’t many residents in the small apartment building and most of them are stuck in her apartment. Will Annabelle’s first Christmas as a newlywed be spent with a killer?

The Cookie Book by Rebecca Firth is Available Now! | DisplacedHousewife

The death of island playboy Curtis Marlin doesn’t register on busy caterer River Holloway’s radar…that is, until her brother and his girlfriend are arrested for the former athlete’s murder. Certain of the pair’s innocence, the amateur sleuth sets out to investigate. Suspicion on the island spreads like chocolate sauce when River questions the victim’s teammates. The suspects don’t appreciate her stirring up trouble, but she won’t let an election-hungry sheriff make her brother a sacrificial lamb.

But there’s more than murder on River’s to-do list. A missing groom, catered banquets, and River’s own wedding plans keep her hopping like a short order cook. And as the cherry on the sundae, she has a wild kitty to tame. Under mossy oaks and rustling palmettoes, fact and fiction blend in a mouthwatering romp of good eatin’ and yummy recipes. Spawning Suspicion is the second in Toussaint’s Seafood Capers Mystery Series.

Review of Games Of Cone

In Cynthia Baxter’s fourth Lickety Splits Mystery, ice cream shoppe owner and amateur sleuth Kate McKAy doesn’t waffle around scooping up new clientele at a historic hotel, but her hopes of becoming the Hudson Valley’s reigning ice cream queen melt fast when murder checks-in!

From the moment Kate arrives at the imposing Mohawk Mountain Resort, not even luggage brimming with hot fudge can sweeten her stay. Instead of savoring alone time with her on-again boyfriend Jake and leading workshops on whipping together delectable frosty treats, she finds herself stranded at the isolated hotel with a small group of nutty characters–and a dead body.

When the corpse of wealthy cosmetics executive Bethany La Montaigne is suddenly found following a blackout, any of the five strangers trapped with Kate and Jake could be the killer. Chilled to the core, Kate vows to discover whether the victim’s mortal enemy was a smooth-talking playboy, bubbly millennial, mousy librarian, charming Englishman, or the Mohawk’s creepy general manager…

Bethany’s life was chock full of scandals and there’s little doubt that someone refused to endure another taste. With just a sprinkling of clues, it’s up to Kate to bring justice to a culprit who believes that revenge is a dish best served cold… (Goodreads)

The characters are well rounded and well developed. In this book, Kate and Jake head off to a historical hotel, where Kate is supposed to give some demonstrations for ice cream and its history, and spend some alone time with Jake. But when a storm hits and a fallen tree strands them at the hotel, things get a little tense. And when one of the guests is killed, they really have their hands full trying to figure out the murderer. Kate has to try and get close to the remaining guests and see who had the most reason to do the deed. It was good to spend time with Kate and Jake again, they have to figure out where their relationship is headed.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I could picture the ice cream treats in my mind’s eye. The mystery was well plotted, and even though there were a limited number of suspects, I was still surprised at who the culprit was.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well plotted cozy mystery. Trying to solve the mystery and trying some of the ice cream recipes is a good way to spend your time.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
