Something about Summerhaven’s historic church gives Tamsyn the willies, and she’s pretty sure it’s not just her fear of being burned at the stake as a witch. Even so, when the cool new priest asks her to bake cookies for the dedication of a new church bell, it’s hard to say no. Aunt Gwen’s magic has gone all wonky, for starters. Plus, Aunt Gwen’s boyfriend is teaming up with Noah for some secret shenanigans, with a little supernatural help from Lillian and Gus.

Then there’s the fact that while the inn’s guest list looks like a who’s who of America’s upper crust, Tamsyn can’t shake the suspicion something fishy is going on as floor boards creak and keys go missing in the dead of night. To make matters even worse, there’s a funny smell coming from the chimney. If Tamsyn doesn’t get to the bottom of it all soon, they’ll be lucky if the whole island isn’t blown to smithereens.

Will Tamsyn figure out what’s really going on at the island church before it’s too late?

Review of Cobblered To Death

Out of the frying pan, into the fire . . .

Courtney Archer is known for hosting the show Cooking with the Farmer’s Daughter . . . despite the fact that she’s actually a pediatrician’s daughter. Now she’s signed on for a role on The American Baking Battle. On this reality show, she can start developing a more authentic image for herself—and as a bonus, the usual backstabbing and manufactured drama isn’t part of the Baking Battle script. But genuine drama is heating up behind the scenes . . .

During a film shoot in the scenic Pocono Mountains, Courtney has to juggle career commitments like pots on a six-burner stove. Adding to the stress is Mick, a contestant who finds out about her fake farm-girl story. Determined to succeed at her new gig, she whips up a cherry cobbler in a cast-iron fry pan one evening and leaves it out to cool. But the next morning, it’s Mick’s body that’s cooling—right next to Courtney’s pan, now classified as a murder weapon . . . (Goodreads)

The premise of this book is a good one, a baking competition. It reminded me of a cooking show that is currently on television, The Great British Bake Off. It was great to see some of the behind the scenes that go into making such a show. It showed a different type of cooking cozy and I enjoyed that.

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Courtney is smart and a hard worker and it seems as though she is good at gathering information. That comes in handy when someone in the set is killed. The co-hosts and the contestants added a realistic feel to the book.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and the descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. The mystery was well plotted but I do think there could have been more suspects to consider. That is only my opinion and others might not agree with me.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. And if you like cooking competitions like I do, you should pick up this book.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Sit, Stay, Slay
Dog Club Mystery, Book #5
V. M. Burns
5 Stars

When her best friend Dixie is suspected of killing a dog show judge, Lilly must bring one sick puppy to heel . . .
Tennessee transplant Lilly Echosby has two great loves: dogs and mysteries. So naturally she’s named her poodles Aggie, after Agatha Christie, and Rex, for Rex Stout. Now that she has two dogs to manage, it makes sense to enter Aggie in an obedience competition—especially since her instructor is Lilly’s gal pal, Scarlet “Dixie” Jefferson.

But when one of the judges for the competition turns out to be Dixie’s high school rival, the dog trainer gets hot under the collar. When the woman is found strangled, Dixie becomes the number one suspect. With the help of the other dog club members, Lilly must find the real killer—before the next judge Dixie tangles with throws the book at her . . . (Goodreads)

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Lilly and Dixie are the best of friends and they will do what needs to be done when they have a mystery to solve. They have some help from other members of the dog club that they belong to. It was also great to spend more time with Lilly’s son and daughter and see what is going on in their life.

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and in my mind’s eye, it brought the book to life. The mystery was well plotted and not easily solved.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Review of A Big Fat Greek Murder

A Big Fat Greek Murder
A Goddess Of Greene St. Book #2
Kate Collins
5 Stars

The New York Times bestselling author of the Flower Shop Mystery series returns with the second installment in her new Goddess of Greene St. Mystery series starring single mom Athena Spencer, who returns to Michigan to work at her family’s garden center, raise a pet raccoon, and dig up the dirt on suspects when a wedding rehearsal ends up with the murder of a groom…

The entire family has been put to work when a big fat Greek wedding rehearsal is booked at the Parthenon. All hands are needed for rolling grape leaves, layering moussaka, and keeping the bride calm. But then the groom goes M.I.A. and there’s far more to worry about than just whether Yiayia’s lemon rice soup has gone cold.

No matter how tangy the tzatziki, everyone’s appetite is ruined when the groom is found dead, a pair of scissors planted in his back. When the bride accuses Athena’s sister Selene, a hairstylist, of seducing and stabbing her fiance, it’s all-out war–and it’s up to Athena to dig up the dirt on the suspects and nip these suspicions in the bud… (Goodreads)

The characters are well rounded and well developed. I enjoyed the interactions between Athena and her family a lot, and it brought a lot of humor to the book. Athena is a hard worker and she does not let anything get in her way when she is trying to protect her family. She has to figure out who the murderer is or else one of her sisters may be going to prison for a long time. Her and Case make really good partners and it may turn into something else.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and brought everything to life in my mind’s eye. And the food that was being described had my mouth watering. The mystery was well plotted and there were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I cannot wait to see what trouble Athes and her family get into next.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Even though they have taken a road trip, they are still ready to solve a mystery. This time it is very personal because Mae is trying to solve the mystery of the house fire that took her family away from her.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the beginning. “You have a full day ahead, Audra. At 7:15, you need to call the wholesaler in New Orleans and negotiate a better price for a mango wood cabinet.
At 7:45 place your order for more Post-It notes, super sticky and you need another dewormer treatment for Hamilton.
At 9:30 wrangle Nikki’s shopping spree at Zuri Furniture and keep her away from Sheriff Shane.
At 11:00 call Mrs. Poole to confirm how many blue china vases she needs for the living room.”

“Did I leave myself any reminders?”
“Yes, Audra, Find the MURDERER.”

Now a reluctant sleuth, Audra suddenly finds herself entangled in crime instead of in design. Fortunately, she has her sister-in-law, Nikki Sullivan, by her side to hunt down the clues.

But the more clues Audra discovers, the more she realizes that the secrets in her beloved community go deeper than she ever thought possible.
Can this amateur sleuth find the murderer before losing the interior design studio she’s worked so hard to open?
Will Nikki’s fast-talking antics put the Sullivan sisters in danger?
AND how does Audra find the perfect vase to go with the perfect cashmere throw?

A Ghost of a Chance: A Paranormal Cozy Mystery Romance (Ghost Detective Book 4) by [Jane Hinchey]

Running a private investigation business in the seaside town of Firefly Bay should be a pretty easy job. One where I call the shots—figuratively speaking because to put clumsy little ole me in charge of a firearm is just asking for trouble. After a hectic few months all I’m after is an easy day, where my cases add up to nothing more strenuous than deciding if tonight’s takeout is pizza or tacos (or both).

Should have known my day was going to go to hell in a handbasket when someone switched out my coffee order for decaf (seriously, who does that?) and my main squeeze, Captain Cowboy Hot Pants, aka Detective Kade Galloway’s ex-girlfriend and internal affairs investigator, Savannah Mcintosh, turns up to work a case.

Before I can say café latte, Galloway’s dodging my calls, I’ve got a raccoon on my hands who’s decided mi casa es su casa, my ghostly best friend has a crush to die for, and local teenager Kira Melendez has turned up missing.

So much for an easy day. I have a sneaking suspicion my life is about to become a whole new level of crazy.
