Killer Content (A Brooklyn Murder Mystery Book 1) by [Olivia Blacke]

It’s murder most viral in this debut mystery by Olivia Blacke.

Bayou transplant Odessa Dean has a lot to learn about life in Brooklyn. So far she’s scored a rent free apartment in one of the nicest neighborhoods around by cat-sitting, and has a new job working at Untapped Books & Café. Hand-selling books and craft beers is easy for Odessa, but making new friends and learning how to ride the subway? Well, that might take her a little extra time.

But things turn more sour than an IPA when the death of a fellow waitress goes viral, caught on camera in the background of a couple’s flash-mob proposal video. Nothing about Bethany’s death feels right to Odessa–neither her sudden departure mid-shift nor the clues that only Odessa seems to catch. As an up-and-coming YouTube star, Bethany had more than one viewer waiting for her to fall from grace.

Determined to prove there’s a killer on the loose, Odessa takes matters into her own hands. But can she pin down Bethany’s killer before they take Odessa offline for good? (Amazon)

Review of Aloe and Goodbye

Aloe and Goodbye

Ruby Shaw Mysteries, Book #1

Janice Peacock

5 Stars

Synopsis:

After being placed in witness protection, Ruby Shaw and her daughter move to the former ghost town of Paradise, Arizona, which is nothing like its name implies. The US marshal handling their case has this advice: Fly under the radar—but that’s difficult to do after their neighbor is murdered.

====================

New Yorker Ruby Shaw arrives in a hillside town in Arizona with a brand-new name, a duffel bag on her shoulder, and her daughter, Allie, at her side. Before arriving, Ruby witnesses a murder that lands her in the witness protection program. That decision means she’s gone from being a successful artist to being a nobody in a postage-stamp-sized town called Paradise—a name that doesn’t fit the former ghost town. Even though their new digs are a little shabby, and there may be ghosts haunting the town, they are optimistic about their new lives, that is, until a neighbor turns up dead.

Having just arrived in town, living next door to the victim, and without an alibi, the community members are suspicious of Ruby. A local deputy befriends her, but the deputy still points to her as the culprit each time they find a new clue. If matters weren’t bad enough, Allie is having trouble fitting in at her new school, and Ruby can’t seem to hold down a job.

As they settle in, they meet the quirky inhabitants of Paradise: Bette—the chatterbox café owner, Flora—Allie’s eccentric babysitter, and Derek—who runs local history tours, which he jazzes up with ghost stories of questionable veracity.

Ruby’s life improves when she meets a handsome cook at the local café who is passionate about succulents and cacti, and may feel equally passionate about her. Even though Ruby and Allie want to stay in Paradise, a US marshal has other ideas, as he threatens to move them to a new town after Ruby gets mixed up in the murder investigation. Ruby must find the killer before she and Allie lose their new home or even worse—their lives. (Goodreads)

Review:

Aloe and Goodbye is the first book in the Ruby Shaw Mystery series and it is a good beginning.  The characters are engaging and the storyline is unique.

Ruby has a lot on her plate, the least of all keeping her and her daughter alive.  She has witnessed a murder and has been placed in witness protection.  And to make matters worse, shortly after arriving at their new home, a neighbor is found dead and since she is new to the neighborhood, she is considered a suspect.  Just one more thing for Ruby to have to deal with.

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Ruby meets some of the neighbors and, unfortunately, some of the law enforcement personnel too.   She has a lot of interactions with US Marshal Victor Wilson, who is her lifeline on the witness protection program.  It will be fun to see how important he is in future books.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning.  The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The mystery was well plotted and it was not easily solved.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I cannot wait to read the next one.

Mystery Bones Murders:
A gripping story of love, deceit, and redemption
(Frankie Shep Suspense Novellas) by Karen Randau

The pace of the story is perfect, with just enough suspense from page to page that you don’t want to put the book down. I liked that Frankie searched for clues but was smart enough to call in the police when things were out of her depth.
~Storeybook Reviews

Although the fast-paced tale does feature an abundance of corpses, it’s (thankfully) not the stuff that nightmares are made of – making for a short, lightweight thriller with many a twist along the way.
~Cassidy’s Bookshelves

Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours–Spawning Suspicion – mjbreviewers

After a cursory inspection, he turns a blood-chilling stare at Frankie. The bone isn’t ancient. Worse, the victim could be the remains of Frankie’s mother. She disappeared from her own bed more than a decade ago.

And now her retired father is missing.

As Frankie digs deeper, she discovers the terrifying truth that a serial killer is using her land to bury his victims, all members of her family and inner circle.

And now he’s watching her.

Mystery Bones Murders is a story of love, heart-wrenching deception, and finding redemption.

Cold as Ice: A Mika Chalmers Hockey Mystery (The Mika Chalmers Hockey Mystery Series Book 5) by [Heather C. Myers]

After everything that happened over the holidays, private investigator Mika Chalmers needs some space – and she gets it in the form of a reunion of sorts.

The NHL Irvine Buccaneers have been around since 1989 and their 32 year anniversary is coming up. Every year, Mika gets an invitation to attend the intimate reunion of the alumni due to being the current coach’s daughter but rejects it because high heels and small talk are things she would rather avoid.

This time, however, she decides to accept. What else does she have to do for New Year’s? It’s definitely not moping over a frustrating, arrogant, jerk of a detective.

What Mika doesn’t expect is a murder to take place or for said jerk of a detective Alex Beech to be there, assigned to security detail after the Chief of Police discovered he had contact with his father. Despite the tension between the two, they’re forced to team up to solve it.

Granted, Jack Davenport is a womanizing sleaze with a peanut allergy and an ex-wife who’s going for the jugular. But that doesn’t mean he deserves to be killed – especially not during a meet-and-greet with eleven other people in the room.

But when a second murder occurs, Mika realizes that this isn’t a game with targets. This is a death match, and if she doesn’t figure out who’s pulling the strings, it won’t be long before someone else is next.

With the heated chemistry of Castle and the unpredictable twists and turns of Bones, hockey fans are devouring this new romantic mystery series by a USA Today Best Selling Author. (Amazon)

Cottage on Gooseberry Bay Books 1 - 3 by [Kathi Daley]

USA Today Bestselling author Kathi Daley brings you a heartwarming mystery series about finding answers and fostering hope while building friendships and embracing the magic of life by the sea and small town holidays.

Ainsley Holloway had come to Gooseberry Bay to find answers about her past. She’d come to find an explanation for the dreams that haunted her after the death of the cop who’d both rescued and raised her. And she’d come to identify the family she couldn’t remember but knew in her heart she’d once belonged to.

Ainsley hoped that by finding these answers, she’d also find healing. She hoped that once she’d resurrected the memories buried deep in her mind, she’d find peace.

The Cottage at Gooseberry Bay is a series about, not only finding answers, but finding hope.
It’s a series about family and friendship.
It’s a series about shared holidays, festivals, and celebrations.
It’s a series about shared heartbreak and hardship.
And it’s a series about the bond that can be forged amongst strangers when tragedy binds two or more individuals with a common goal.

In book 1 in the series, Ainsley arrives in Gooseberry Bay only to find there will be no easy answers as she’d so naively hoped. Unwilling to leave before she gets what she came for, she rents a cottage on the sea where she and her dogs, Kai and Kallie, can settle in and wait. Her first night in town she meets a young woman who is later found dead. The local sheriff has labeled the death of this young woman a suicide based on a text message she’d sent before she died. But Ainsley, who’d spoken to the victim only hours before the text was sent, isn’t quite as sure of the easy answer the sheriff would like everyone to believe. An investigative journalist by trade and cops daughter by upbringing, Ainsley never had been the sort to walk away from unanswered questions, so with the help of new friends she meets along the way, she initiates a parallel investigation which seems to indicate the sheriff’s real motivation in trying to sell the suicide angle to the community is to protect the interests of a very rich and very powerful man.

In book 2 in the series, Ainsley finally meets Adam Winchester who agrees to help her find the answers she is looking for. Meanwhile, Ainsley joins forces with Parker, Jemma, and Josie as they search for the truth about what might have happened to the family who vanished five Thanksgivings ago.

In book 3 in the series, Ainsley decides to set aside her search for answers to her past and enjoy her first Gooseberry Christmas by volunteering along with the rest of the gang for the Christmas Festival on the boardwalk. Normally Ainsley didn’t bother much with Christmas and all its trappings but this year she is excited to join in as most of the locals are prone to do. Of course it does put a bit of a damper on the festivities when a body is found in the tree lot where the gang had offered to help out, but that doesn’t stop Ainsley from making the most of the season in spite of the crazy investigation she can’t help but get pulled into. Faberge in the Frappuccino: Coffee House Clairvoyant: Book 2 by [Kelty Kells]

A girl’s best friend isn’t diamonds—it’s Faberge.

Very few people know about my talent for psycometry, and those who do tend not to take it seriously. After all, being able to touch an object and see its memories is pretty far-fetched, right?

Wrong.

Dead wrong, actually.

I’m still coming to terms with the fact that this talent helped me solve Brit Fuller’s murder. Unfortunately, she’s not the only one who’s been killed recently, and now, thanks to a glitzy Faberge egg in my frap, I might have the key to solving Mooring Cove’s latest crime. I just have to keep my cop ex-boyfriend off my tail long enough to do it and not end up dead myself along the way.

RIP me, huh?

My biggest question, though, is who’s putting things in my coffee and why? I mean, c’mon. Talk about a choking hazard.

Well, whoever it is, they’re messing with the wrong Karen. I’m gonna find out, and when I do, I’m not above throwing hands—and other things. (Amazon)

Opals in the Oolong: Coffee House Clairvoyant: Book 3 by [Kelty Kells]

Glitz, glam, bam, bam, bam. Opals have never been so deadly.

Okay, so maybe I’m psychic. Not the sort of psychic you’re thinking of, though. I can’t read fortunes or palms, and I have no idea what tarot cards are for. That’s because I’m not your run-of-the-mill psychic. I’m something else. I can touch objects and collect their history, and someone in Mooring Cove definitely knows my secret.

So far, they’ve spiked my coffee with an emerald necklace and a Faberge egg, and now they’ve done it again. This time, though, I’ve found raw opals in my tea.

Oh, yum.

Now it’s up to me to narrow down who’s been killed, what these opals have to do with the murder, and who in town knows about my talents. Sure, that might seem easy, but trust me, with my cop ex-boyfriend going through a divorce, things just got a whole lot more difficult.

Plus, I’m pretty sure he still thinks I’m involved in the murders.

Doesn’t matter. One way or another, I’m gonna solve this one, nail down whoever’s been spiking my drinks, and walk away from an explosion in slow-motion.

Okay, so probably not that last one, but a girl can dream, right? (Amazon)

After a disastrous career-and-relationship-ending event, she escapes New York City and moves to a sleepy river town in Pennsylvania, courtesy of a dead aunt she never knew. No square pegs allowed!

Aunt Hazel’s old cottage is only slightly better than the decrepit gardens surrounding it. Mia doesn’t know the first thing about gardening and expects this will be one more failure on her seemingly endless list. Even Aunt Hazel’s ancient cat seems to have pegged her as a loser.

When Mia stumbles over a body in the overgrown garden, the newcomer catches the eye of the police chief and his hotshot detective, Derek Fairfax, and she becomes the number one suspect in the case. Much to her shock and awe, she also catches the eye of Derek’s brother, Dane, a lawyer with a head for what’s legal and a bod for what isn’t—but getting arrested for murder would certainly put a damper on her dating life.

When a fisherman spots a car in the river, it’s the most exciting news during a slow week in Stirling Mills, and newspaper editor Lexie Lincoln is there to cover it. The cops think it was an accident, but a ghost on the scene tells Lexie the drowned driver got what he deserved for cheating her out of her land. Lexie figures the ghost got vengeance.

She’d have thought the town would rally behind her investigation of a real estate scam, but she finds herself standing alone. Her suspect has an eerie hold over everyone he encounters. If she doesn’t find concrete proof that he committed a crime, she may get run out of town. That’s a real challenge when no one still alive will talk to her.

Death Bee Comes Her (An Oregon Honeycomb Mystery Book 1) by [Nancy Coco]

First in a new series! Includes tips and recipes!

Welcome to a specialty shop in the Oregon tourist town of Oceanview, where it’s all things honey—from taffy to body scrub. But murder can make things sticky . . .

A BALMY WAY TO GO

With her Let It Bee honey boutique buzzing along nicely, life is as sweet as nectar for Wren Johnson—until she takes a morning walk along the Pacific beach with her Havana Brown cat, Everett, and stumbles upon the body of Agnes Snow, the cranky queen of the local craft fairs, stiff as driftwood. More unfortunate? Clutched in the victim’s fist is a label from Wren’s homemade beeswax-and-honey lip balm. Which makes Officer Jim Hampton focus his dreamy-blue Paul Newman eyes on Wren as suspect number one.

With fabulous feline support from Everett, Wren must comb the town for clues and clear her name before someone else gets stung.

Murder at Mabel's Motel (A Granny Reid Mystery Book 3) by [G. A. McKevett]

Stella “Granny” Reid’s youth wasn’t the only thing changed by time in tiny, nondescript McGill, Georgia. Except even back in the 1980s, the Southern town still had a way of attracting downright dubious characters—some with a talent for murder.

As quirky as McGill’s residents can be, they usually welcome society’s oddballs and outcasts into the community with open arms. But the three members of the Lone White Wolf Pack are a different story. Townsfolk aren’t feeling the least bit neighborly toward the ignorant gang widely believed to have orchestrated several hate crimes in the area . . .

When the small group’s irredeemable leader, Billy Ray Sonner, is found dead in an abandoned motel, most assume it was the result of an accidental overdose. An unfortunate yet predictable end for a man who lived the way Billy did. Only Stella and the sheriff have witnessed the crime scene in person, and the smell of cyanide means something more disturbing happened in that ramshackle room. Something like homicide . . .

While Stella wades through a flood of suspects, uncovered secrets link both Billy’s closest allies and respected locals to the incident. One thing is certain—this wasn’t an impulsive act of revenge. There’s a sophisticated killer on the loose, and Stella must expose deep-rooted fears and dark pasts if she wants to crack a carefully planned murder and stop McGill from descending into chaos. When Fox gets involved to help his friend, Phoebe begins to investigate the rival artist.

At the same time, Eva is enlisted to go undercover at the works so she can gain the confidence of the female employees, who are only allowed to paint, not design, which may have led to a grudge against the victim. Review of Metaphor For Murder

Synopsis:

An author’s mysterious disappearance. A pugnacious hired gun holding a pug for ransom. Charlee must find them both before the deadline expires.

Charlee Russo’s career and bank account will be DOA unless her literary event with bestselling author Rodolfo Lapaglia succeeds. It’s her very last chance to revise her life. But when she goes to fetch him from the train station, he has disappeared, much like Charlee’s royalty statements.

An angry mob wants their refund from the cancelled event, but Lapaglia kept the money and stuck Charlee with the bills. As she searches for him and his checkbook, her neighbor’s pug, Peter O’Drool, is dognapped with an ominous demand that Charlee deliver Lapaglia if she ever wants to see the beloved pooch again. Can Charlee solve the mystery of Lapaglia’s disappearance and close the book on this fiasco before Peter O’Drool runs out of time?

Review:

Charlee finds herself in a sticky situation when the author that she is meeting for a literary event never shows up.  People have paid good money for the workshop and they are not very happy with Charlee.  And Charlee is not happy with the author because she is out a lot of money.  When it becomes clear that he has disappeared, she decides she has to figure out what happened to him so she can get reimbursed.  And when someone else that has been looking for fim kidnaps a neighbor’s dog, the stakes become even higher.

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Charlee is smart and determined and she does not give up easily.  Ozzi, her boyfriend, is rather quiet and seems to go along with whatever Charlee wants.  Don and his wife, Barb, are Charlee’s neighbors and Pete’s owners.  And Pete, the pug, stole the show for cuteness.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning.  The author added some very funny situations that Charlee found herself in and that kept it lighthearted.  The mystery was well plotted and there were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider and it was not easily solved.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I cannot wait to see whatever trouble Charlee gets into next.
