The Broken Spine (A Beloved Bookroom Mystery)
by Dorothy St. James

The Broken Spine is a unique cozy mystery with a bookless library, a clever cat, a demanding mayor, a bevy of beloved books, a determined detective, and a lockpicking librarian.
~The Avid Reader

The book was well-written and fast-paced. I was engaged from the very beginning.

I found Trudell to be a very interesting protagonist, a girl after my own heart.

Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours–Spawning Suspicion – mjbreviewers

The first in an exciting new series featuring Trudell Becket, a spunky librarian who will stop at nothing to save her beloved books and catch a killer!

Trudell Becket, book-loving librarian, finds herself in a bind when the library where she works is turned into a state-of-the-art bookless library. In a rare move of rebellion, Trudell rescues hundreds of her library’s beloved books slated for the recycle center. She sets up a secret book room in the library’s basement and opens it to anyone who shares her love of the printed book.

When the town councilman, who was the vocal proponent of the library’s transformation into a “futuristic technological center,” is crushed under an overturned shelf of DVDs, Trudell becomes the police’s prime suspect for his murder. She was the only person in the library at the time of his death, or so the police believe. But that’s not true. For the past month, Trudell had been letting a few dozen residents into the building through the basement entrance so they could read and check out the printed books.

But if she tells the police about the backdoor patrons who were in the library at the time of the murder, she’d have to explain about the secret book room and risk losing the books. In order to protect herself from being arrested for a murder she didn’t commit, Trudell–with the help of a group of dedicated readers–decides to investigate. She quickly discovers you can’t always judge a book by its cover.

Mystery author Dorothy St. James was born in New York but raised in South Carolina. She makes her home on an artsy island community in South Carolina with her husband, a crazy dog, and fluffy cat. Though writing has always been a passion for her, she pursued an undergraduate degree in Wildlife Biology and a graduate degree in Public Administration and Urban Planning. She put her educational experience to use, having worked in all branches and all levels of government including local, regional, state, and federal. She even spent time during college working for a non-profit environmental watchdog organization.

Switching from government service and community planning to fiction writing wasn’t as big of a change as some might think. Her government work was all about the stories of the people and the places where they live. As an urban planner, Dorothy loved telling the stories of the people she met. And from that, her desire to tell the tales that were so alive in her heart grew until she could not ignore it any longer. In 2001, she took a leap of faith and pursued her dream of writing fiction full-time.

Review Of Downward Death

Downward Death

Magical Mane Mystery, Book #1

Stella Bixby

5 Stars

Synopsis:

When it comes to dead bodies, yoga can only relieve so much stress.

Ellie Vanderwick’s life is perfect. Sure, she doesn’t have friends, family, or a steady job. But she does have her pet pig, Penelope, and her VW Microbus, Mona.

If only she could get her hair under control. Some might call it magic, Ellie just calls it annoying.

Mad, sad, happy, or scared—it always starts the same way: with a little tingle. That’s when she knows her hair is about to go berserk. Whether it pulls itself into curls, turns bright purple, or goes completely limp is beyond her control.

But when she gets a letter from her newly departed grandmother telling her she inherited a farm, she knows it’s time to get a handle on the hair situation. Especially, if she wants to find out why her mother left her at a fire station all those years ago.

Cliff Haven, Iowa is the perfect small town. Friendly people, warm smiles, and almost no crime.

Until Ellie shows up.

When she finds a dead body in her cornfield, the entire town seems to think she did it.

Will she be run out of town? Will her big hairy secret come out? Or will she be able to solve the crime and learn more about her family?

Meet Ellie in this first installment of the Magical Mane Mystery Series! (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Ellie has had a hard life but she is a survivor and she is getting by.  She has her pet pig, Penelope and her VW Microbus, Mona.  When she inherits a farm from her grandmother, whom she has never met, things are  beginning to look up.  Until she finds a dead body in a field on the farm and she becomes a suspect.  Now she has to figure out the murderer before she gets put away for life.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning.  I liked the way that Ellie’s hair changed colors and textures depending on her mood, it lent a bit of paranormal to this book.  The mystery was well plotted and had enough suspects to consider and  clues to sift through.

This book was pleasantly different from the other cozies that I read.  I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys a well crafted cozy.  I am looking forward to reading more about Ellie’s adventures.

Review of Finding Shelter

Finding Shelter

Rescue Alaska, Book #5

Kathi Daley

5 Stars

Synopsis:

Rescue Alaska is a fast moving mystery series with a paranormal twist which takes place in a small town in northern Alaska where visitors come to hike and ski. Harmony Carson is a lifelong resident who volunteers as a member of the local search and rescue team. She has a unique gift which she often considers a curse. She is able to ‘see’ the individuals she is meant to help rescue, and more often than not she can feel their fear and their pain as well.

In book 5 – Harmony’s visions are becoming more frequent and they are becoming more intense. It seems they are starting to hurt her but no matter how hard she tries she can’t seem to escape them. She can’t sleep and often has headaches. There is one vision specifically that is haunting her nights so she sets out with Houston to find the answers she needs to hopefully stop the nightmares (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well developed and well rounded.  Harmony is still having visions but these visions have headaches and sleeplessness accompanying them.  She and Houston try to figure out who the vision is about and what they can do to help them.  Can they figure it out in time?

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing  and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning.  I could picture her dreams in my mind’s eye and it was a little terrifying.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I cannot wait to read the next one in the series.

The Haunted Pendant: A Paranormal Artifacts Cozy Mystery (Paranormal Artifacts Cozy Mysteries Book 1) by [Tegan Maher]

It’s not entirely my fault, though. Everything would have turned out fine had my pathologically organized sister not catalogued them and sent them to auction before I had a chance to test them for magical mojo. Now the items are scattered all over town, and I’ll have to track them down one by one.

Lucky for me, I’ve got a heaping helping of ancient magic coursing through my veins, a best friend who’s as powerful and loyal as he is sarcastic and charismatic, and a family with generations of experience managing dark artifacts behind us.

Join Sage Parker on her first adventure as she tracks down a pendant haunted by an angry spirit bent on finding a new body regardless of who she has to hurt to get it.

DAISY MORROW Super-sleuth!: The Root of All Evil: Book One of the Daisy Morrow series, a Cozy Mystery with a wicked side! by [R T Green]

According to Daisy, nothing is ever quite what it seems. In her case, that’s the truest thing ever spoken.

Daisy moved to the village a few miles from Kings Lynn in Norfolk a year ago, after a very unfortunate incident in London made her decide village life was the best option. Now she trundles around on a mobility scooter, even though she doesn’t actually need to. She’s adapted to country life quite well, although she rather unkindly refers to the village of Great Wiltingham as the ‘place people go to wilt’.

It’s not entirely populated by retired folk… there are some families, and even a few young couples. But it has to be said the village has more elderly residents than anything else. It’s a beautiful place, with a duck-pond that’s more like a lake, a second pond at the other end of the village, and a lot of open green spaces.

Daisy has been married to Aidan for thirty-five years. No one in the village knows that, because although he spends most of the time in Daisy’s thatched cottage, he has his own place just around the corner.
Given what Daisy used to do before she retired, and the very unfortunate incident in London, they both decided it was best people didn’t know just how much of a couple they actually were.

Daisy is seventy-one now. But for her, old habits die hard. And for some strange reason, trouble seems to follow her around. It’s been a peaceful twelve months settling into village life, but that’s about to end…

‘The Root of all Evil’ is the first book in the Daisy Morrow series. After some strange goings-on and a murder in the village, Daisy and Aiden, together with a young police-woman called Sarah, whose curiosity gets the better of her, set about solving the mystery.

They discover the village is being secretly abused by some very unsavoury people, a fact Daisy has very good reason to hate, so she sets off on a personal vendetta against those responsible. Yes indeed, old habits die hard!

And it all begins with a rose bush, mysteriously uprooted in the middle of the night…

Nailed It: A Todd Jones comic thriller by [J.R. Ripley]

What happens when South Florida’s most unscrupulous real estate salesman meets South Florida’s biggest con artist? And what happens when they meet on the roof of the Florida mansion belonging to the world’s most ruthless scrap dealer? Who knows? But sparks are bound to fly, especially with that hurricane coming straight at them.

Another fast-paced Todd Jones comic thriller/caper by bestselling author JR Ripley!

Praise for the Todd Jones comic thriller series!

“…Joins the growing list of Florida crime writers (Carl Hiaasen, Laurence Shames, Tim Dorsey) who mix capers with comedy. This lightweight romp stars unscrupulous real-estate salesman Todd Jones, whose wheelings and dealings have landed him a hot Ft. Lauderdale condo and an even hotter girlfriend but who seems to have run out of luck. The story opens with Todd being threatened at gunpoint by his best friend, Dr. Doug Freeman, who is miffed that Todd slept with his wife, Caroline. When Doug is killed in a boating accident, and Caroline is found dead soon after, things don’t look good for Todd. To make matters worse, he has sold a bum property to a mobster and unwittingly involved himself in a drug deal with a surfer dude. Then his mother comes to visit. Readers will fall hard for this lovable loser as he struggles to stay alive while keeping his girlfriend from finding out what he is doing and his mom’s pet pig from eating his stuff. Further adventures would be most welcome.” Booklist

“..A darkly funny, rip-roaring novel about a fast-talking realtor who is quite possibly the world’s worst judge of character. Hunted down by drug dealers, irate customers, a betrayed girlfriend and the husband of a married woman he had an affair with, he has five minutes to live at the opening of the story – perhaps more if he can persuade the angry husband not to point the gun at his head. Then again, perhaps not. Oh, and his mother has come to live with him and won’t take no for an answer. A wildly frantic novel about a ne’er do well whose bad deeds have caught up with him, and his wacky struggle to stay just one step ahead of the trigger, suspenseful to the very last word.” Midwest Book Review

“It’s a comic thriller with a wacky plot. Todd Jones is a hotshot realtor in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with a hot girlfriend. The story begins with Todd getting a routine physical from his doctor and friend Doug Freeman. After the physical Todd asks Doug how healthy he is, Dr. Doug tells him he has five minutes to live. Todd laughs and says no, really is there a problem? Dr. Doug repeats that Todd has Five minutes to live. The doctor goes to a cabinet and pulls out a gun and points it at Todd and tells him he has five minutes to live because he slept with his wife. As Todd is trying to deny everything and stop the madness the doctor is counting down. He does get away and is constantly followed by the obsessed Dr. Doug who continues to try to kill him. Lots of great characters…the last sentence in the book is extremely clever. The book is only 245 pages and is a quick read. I liked it.” Just Plum Crazy

“As Oliver Hardy used to say” well…here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten me into “. As a former RE guy myself, luckily, I have never encountered such an obvious set up, but Todd had his thinking mind disconnected when the knockout babe started talking big money. From there it rolls downhill quickly and actually picks up considerable speed at the ending. That all this conniving takes place in South Florida is no surprise…But makes it easier to digest. The love for money is the root of all evil and the roots go very deep in this story. Great characters brought to life by great and humorous writing (as usual) in any JR Ripley story. I loved Todd’s mom…what a hoot….and the addition of Mr. Squeals was icing on the cake. Another triumph!” Eddie D Amazon Vine Voice (Amazon)

She sets up a secret book room in the library’s basement and opens it to anyone who shares her love of the printed book.

For the past month, Trudell had been letting a few dozen residents into the building through the basement entrance so they could read and check out the printed books.

But if she tells the police about the backdoor patrons who were in the library at the time of the murder, she’d have to explain about the secret book room and risk losing the books. She quickly discovers you can’t always judge a book by its cover. (Amazon)

Merlin the Magical Fluff (A Hilarious Mystery with a Witchy Cat and his Human Familiar) by [Molly Fitz]

My name is Gracie Springs, and I am not a witch… but I’m pretty sure my cat is. I first started to get suspicious when he jumped just a little too high while chasing after a robin in our front yard. I knew for sure when he opened up his mouth and addressed me by name!

The first thing he told me? That he doesn’t like the name I gave him—even though “Fluffy” fits him like a warm sweater at Christmas. Now we’ve compromised on “Merlin the Magical Fluff,” which according to him references his long and proud lineage just fine.

After that small matter was settled, he informed me that I must uphold his secret or risk spending the rest of my life in some magical prison. I agreed, not knowing it would turn into a full-time job of covering his tracks and fibbing our way out of some pretty tight spots.

When my boss at the local coffee shop turns up dead as a dormouse, things go from challenging to practically impossible… especially since all my coworkers seem to think I’m to blame.

Here’s hoping my witchy cat can charm our way out of this one, because right now it looks like I’m cursed if I do and charged with murder if I don’t. Yikes! (Amazon)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Cassie is a caring person who has a special place in her heart for cats.  It is great to see how hard she works for these cats and her and her employee make a great team.  They work well to keep the business running well and they also try to help out in the community.  But this time they have a problem that they need to fix, the murder of an elderly woman and her husband being accused of murder.  They will have to work hard to figure this one out.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning.  I could picture in my mind’s eye Comfy Cats and all of their boarders.  The mystery was well plotted and it had enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider and it was not easily solved.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  Grab a copy and enjoy.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Books To Read In 2021–Part 3

If you made a New Year’s Resolution to read more this year, here are a few of the first-in-the-series books to consider. Enjoy your reading!!!!

A New York chocolatier lands in a sticky situation when she returns to her Amish roots in this debut cozy mystery by the Agatha Award-winning author.

Bailey King is living the sweet life as assistant chocolatier at a famous New York chocolate company. But just when she’s up for a major promotion, she gets word that her grandfather Jebidiah’s heart condition has worsened. Bailey rushes to Harvest, Ohio, where her grandparents still run Swissmen Sweets, the Amish candy shop where she first learned about delicious fudge, truffles, and other assorted delights.

Unfortunately, Baily’s grandparents are suffering from more than just heart trouble. A local Englisch land developer is trying to take over their shop. And when the man is found dead in the candy shop kitchen—with Jebidiah’s chocolate knife buried in his chest—the sheriff suspects Bailey. Now, with the sweet help of a handsome deputy, Bailey is out to clear her name. But as a cunning killer tries to fudge the truth, she may be headed straight into a whole batch of trouble . . .

Recipe Included!

Assaulted Caramel (An Amish Candy Shop Mystery Book 1) by [Amanda Flower]

Her new canine companion is a lot more loyal than her ex-husband—but that doesn’t mean she wanted him dead….

Lilly may be losing a husband but she’s gaining a toy poodle. That could be seen as a win-win, since her new adopted pooch Aggie (named after Agatha Christie) is cute and adorable, and Lilly’s dirty dog of a spouse is cheating on her with a blond bimbo—except for one problem: Albert Echosby’s just been murdered, and Lilly is the number-one suspect.

With the cops barking up the wrong tree, it’s a good thing her best friend Scarlett “Dixie” Jefferson from Chattanooga, Tennessee, decided to take a break from the dog club circuit to pay a visit, along with her own prize pair of poodles. With help from Dixie, her defense attorney daughter, and a blue-eyed man in blue with a K-9 partner, Lilly is determined to collar the real killer. But when a second murder occurs, it’s clear they’re dealing with one sick puppy . . .

In the Dog House (A Dog Club Mystery Book 1) by [V.M. Burns]

Maybe the best thing that ever happened to Kristan “Stan” Connor was losing her high-stress public relations job. Now there’s plenty of time to spend in her sleepy new Connecticut town working on her dream: baking healthy, organic pet treats!

Before long the neighborhood dogs are escaping their yards to show up at Stan’s doorstep, begging for the kinds of special homemade treats her Maine coon cat Nutty loves so much. And Stan’s pet-loving neighbors are thrilled with the new organic options available to their furry family members. But not everyone loves Stan and her newfangled organic ways. . .

It seems Carole Morganwick, the town vet, is from the old school of pet care. But when Stan swallows her pride and brings a very unwilling Nutty in for a checkup, she not only finds Carole dead under a pile of kibble. . .but also that she’s in the dog house as the prime suspect! Finding the real killer and clearing her name will require some seriously surreptitious sniffing around. . .and hopefully, curiosity won’t kill this innocent cat!

Includes Gourmet Pet Food Recipes!

“Like the goodies Stan makes for her Maine coon kitty Nutty, Kneading To Die is a treat! Liz Mugavero weaves animal knowledge into a fun and frisky whodunit, with plenty of lively pet action.” –Clea Simon, author of Cats Can’t Shoot

Kneading to Die (A Pawsitively Organic Mystery Book 1) by [Liz Mugavero]

Welcome to the Historic McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop–where life is sweet, revenge is sweeter, and murder is here to to stay. . .

You Can’t Fudge An Alibi

Allie McMurphy is up to her neck in renovations at the grand old hotel that’s been in her family for generations. With its quaint Victorian charm–and world-famous fudge shop–the place is one of Mackinac Island’s most beloved landmarks.

Sure, every family has a skeleton or two in the closet. But Allie didn’t expect to find an actual corpse inside hers, especially one Joe Jessup, who had a long-running feud with her dear departed grandfather. Which makes Allie the number-one suspect.

Can she sniff out the culprit before another victim checks in?

Sedona runs into danger, the corporate glass ceiling, and an occasional chance at romance in her quest to figure out who is stealing money from Strandfrost. The Magical Pink Pendant: A Paranormal Cozy Mystery (A Witch's Cove Mystery Book 9) by [Vella Day]

Don’t get me wrong. I love magic, just not when it is used for evil.

It’s bad enough when some poor soul is murdered in my hometown, but when he’s near and dear to someone I care about, I have no choice but to look for the killer. Since magic seems to be involved in his death, my teenage cousin and I might be the only ones who can discover the killer’s identity. After all, we are witches.

I was hoping this would be a run-of-the mill case, but no. The number of suspects keeps mounting, making our job more difficult. Considering most suspects live across the state makes it doubly hard.

Can we say road trip!!

Seriously, this person is super dangerous, and we have to take precautions. But never fear, between my trusty talking pink iguana, my very talented business partner who has mad computer skills, and my teenaged psychic cousin, we’re sure to crack the case. (Amazon)

The Mystery of Montague House: An English cozy murder mystery (Summer & Wynter Mysteries Book 1) by [Emma Davies]

I saw something out of the corner of my eye as I was leaving, and you know what that means. It’s never good news when I see something out of the corner of my eye…

With enough rooms to fill a Cluedo board several times over, Montague House has often been the subject of rumour and gossip. Tales of strange goings on, an owner who disappeared one day and was never seen again, not to mention the treasure that rumour has it lies at its heart… But now the present owner has died and the house is to be sold. Has the opportunity come to finally settle the stories once and for all?

Clodagh Wynter doesn’t believe in ghostly goings on and tall tales of secrets. She has her feet very firmly on the ground and, tasked with the job of valuing and cataloguing the house and all its contents, she’s simply looking forward to working in such a glorious setting. And if she happens across a priceless painting, well, that’s just icing on the cake.

Andie Summer is a self-styled Finder of Things (dead bodies mostly), and looking for hidden treasure sounds right up her street, even if there was something very fishy about the mysterious Mr Mayfair who hired her. Because it’s just like she said to her faithful basset hound, Hamish; I saw something out of the corner of my eye as I was leaving, and you know what that means. It’s never good news when I see something out of the corner of my eye…

As the unlikely pair are thrown together, it soon becomes very clear that they are not the only ones searching for the treasure. And they’re going to need all their ingenuity and resourcefulness if they’re ever going to untangle the web of secrets that surrounds Montague House. One that reaches even further than they ever thought possible…

From the #1 International bestselling author comes a new series of cosy murder mysteries introducing the indomitable Andie Summer and Clodagh Wynter, and of course Hamish, everyone’s favourite basset hound. Perfect for fans of Faith Martin, Clare Chase and Anthony Horowitz.

The Lady Jewel Diviner: Book 1 in the Lady Diviner series by [Rosalie Oaks]

Diamonds, Death, and Devonshire tea… in a paranormal Regency England

Miss Elinor Avely’s proper upbringing cannot prepare her for the tiny, spinster vampire who crashes into her sitting room and demands to be fed with a sheep.

Elinor already has enough troubles without having to catch ruminants. First, her secret gift for divining jewels has landed her in scandal, exiling her from London society. Second, a nobleman of dubious repute wants her to find a cache of smuggled jewels, hidden somewhere along the Devon coastline. Last – and worst – she is invited to cream tea at the local manor. And while the autocratic and magnificent Earl of Beresford might be there (and perhaps the jewels themselves too), Beresford is the last person Elinor wants to meet over cream tea.

When a dead body is discovered along the cliffs, of course, such delicate considerations become secondary. Fortunately, Elinor now has a small vampiric chaperone – even if said spinster has a habit of appearing stark naked – and together they are ready to risk the hard questions.

Where are the jewels hidden? Who killed the smuggler? And just when is the cream tea being served?

The Lady Jewel Diviner is the first book in a new historical mystery series, set in Regency England with generous servings of magic, manners, and romance. (Amazon)
