A Magical Mane Mystery, Book #3

Stella Bixby

5 Stars

Synopsis:

Hollywood has come to Cliff Haven, and with it, lots of drama.

Every year, the residents of Cliff Haven put on a Christmas play and try to avoid the theater’s curse. This year, someone won’t get out alive.

Ellie Vanderwick has one singular line in the play—a line she can’t bring herself to say. Pair that with her newfound magical ability and Ellie has her hands full.

But none of it matters when a visitor shows up claiming to know about Ellie’s family. In exchange for helping the visitor solve a years-old murder, Ellie may find what she longs for more than anything in the world.

As long as she can stay alive.

Join Ellie, Penelope, Mona, and the rest of the gang in the third installment of the Magical Mane Mystery series!

Review:

The writing style flows and it defines the characters very clearly through their actions and words.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story and took me on an incredible journey.   The mystery was well plotted and with the numerous twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end.

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Ellie now has some friends she can hang out with, and she has even agreed to be in the Christmas play.  She only has one line in the play, and she is having trouble saying it.  When someone is killed during rehearsal, she feels like she has to help solve the mystery.  It will not be easy, but she is determined to find the culprit.  Penelope, her pet pig, is also on the case and is rooting around clues.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy.  I am looking forward to seeing what kind of trouble Ellie gets into next.

Dead, White and Blue

Juniper Junction Holiday, Book #2

Amy M Reade

5 Stars

Synopsis:

Summer is getting hotter in Juniper Junction, Colorado.

There’s a firebug on the loose, the townspeople are nervous, and Lilly Carlsen, single mom to two teenagers, has even more to worry about. She’s in charge of the Independence Day celebration, her mother’s mental health is declining, and her son is getting ready to leave for college.

But things are about to get even hotter: when a bistro owner dies at the celebration and Lilly’s best friend is charged with murder, events start hitting close to home. It’s up to Lilly to help clear her friend’s name while at the same time dealing her mom’s worsening forgetfulness as well as a coming-of-age issue under her own roof. (Goodreads)

Review:

Lilly still has some problems in her life: the kids are getting older and they do not need her so much, her mom’s dementia is getting worse and her ex is still living in Juniper Junction.  But there are some positive things in her life too:  her relationship with Hassan is moving along nicely and Noley and her brother are getting along great.  She is in charge of town’s reenactment festivities and the Fourth Of July celebration.  When someone is killed during the bash, and Noley is a person of interest, Lilly will have to figure out the real killer.  And also try to figure who is setting abandoned homes on fire around town before someone gets hurt.

The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional. The time that Lilly spends with her family seems so real and down-to-earth. I can feel her pain knowing that her mom is only going to get worse in her dementia and things will have to change.  And I can relate to her feelings about her kids leaving and going to school, those are feelings  many of us have had.   I feel for Lilly and that keeps me engaged even more.

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words.  The mystery was well plotted and had enough twists and turns to keep me guessing until the reveal at the end.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  There is just something about this series that clicks with me and I am enjoying it so much.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

Whole Latte Murder

All-Day Breakfast Cafe, Book #5

Lena Gregory

5 Stars

Synopsis:

Ex-New Yorker and local diner owner Gia Morelli is still getting used to the sweltering Florida sun. But this summer she’ll have to deal with a more dangerous kind of heat–when she’s hot on the trail of another murderer . . .

Summer in Boggy Creek has arrived, and Gia’s best friend, successful real estate agent Savannah, is getting hitched. Now she’s enlisted Gia’s sleuthing talents in a desperate search for the perfect wedding dress. But when Savannah mysteriously vanishes after showing a mansion to a bigwig client, Gia investigates the house Savannah was trying to sell. The first clue she finds is Savannah’s car in the driveway. Inside the house, they stumble on Savannah’s potential buyer–dead. Someone had apparently closed the deal–with a two by four full of nails to the client’s head. Soon afterward, a woman’s body is fished from the lake near the same house. The townsfolk are now sweating bullets over the murders, and the heat comes down on poor Gia to find her missing friend, and track down the killer . . . (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well round, well developed and three dimensional.  The relationship between Gia and Savannah has always been special but when Savannah is kidnapped, their relationship goes to a whole other level.  Gia’s pain and concern are palpable and I could not help but feel for her.  I was turning pages as quickly as I could to see what was going to happen next.  It added more tension that you usually see in a cozy mystery, and that was great.  Gia and Savannah will have their work cut out for them trying to solve the murders.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read. The descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning and took me on a terrifying ride.  The mystery was well plotted and had numerous twists and turns and I was actively engaged until the reveal.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I think this book was my favorite in the series.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Review of Bitter Past

Bitter Past

An Ellie Matthews Novel, Book #1

Caroline Fardig

5 Stars

Synopsis:

From USA Today bestselling author Caroline Fardig comes a gripping new forensic mystery series.

Three years ago, criminalist Ellie Matthews was blindsided when a grisly homicide case suddenly became personal. She abandoned the danger and stress of crime scene investigation for a professorship at a posh private college and never looked back.

Now, Ellie’s pleasant world is shattered when she finds the dead body of a female student. The campus is in chaos, reporters are circling like vultures, and Ellie is trying her best to distance herself from the situation. Not an easy task when her closest colleague becomes the prime suspect.

After the college community is rocked by another suspicious death, Ellie’s mentor, Sheriff Jayne Walsh, convinces her to consult on the case. Partnered with quick-witted Detective Nick Baxter, Ellie reluctantly bottles up her personal demons and dives back into the world she left behind, racing to make sense of the evidence before the killer strikes again. (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well developed and well rounded.  Ellie is a smart hardworking woman who has not had a good past.  She has a history of being a criminologist but after an especially gruesome crime scene she left and is now teaching that very same subject.  When she discovers a dead body, she finds herself once again thrown in to the world of crime and death.  I like that Ellie was three dimensional and she was not perfect.  That made her seem more realistic to me.  Detective Nick Baxter is good at his job but he needs Ellie’s expertise if he is going to solve this crime.  I really enjoyed getting to know Ellie and Nick and am looking forward to spending time with them in future books.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book I felt like I was right there watching all the action taking place.  She seems to have a real knowledge of forensics, either from real life experience or great research and that aspect of the story was very believable.  I felt like I learned some things about this subject and I really liked that.

The mystery was well plotted and moved along at just the right pace.  There were enough suspects to consider and enough clues to sift through and with red herrings thrown in, the mystery was not an easy one to solve.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well plotted mystery.  I have read other books written by this author (The Java Jive mysteries) and I really enjoyed them.  Now I have more hard core mysteries to read by this author and I am looking forward to it.

Carolyn Haines’s Independent Bones is the next novel in the series that Kirkus Reviews characterizes as “Stephanie Plum meets the Ya-Ya Sisterhood” featuring sassy Southern private investigator Sarah Booth Delaney.

When Dr. Alala Diakos, a visiting professor of Greek literature, comes to teach at Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi, it doesn’t take long for controversy to follow. With her fervent feminist ideals and revolutionary leanings, she quickly earns the admiration of many—and the ire of others. During a speech in the park, in which Alala tries to organize the women of Zinnia to demand equal pay, the crowd gets unruly, with men heckling the professor. And when PI Sarah Booth Delaney finds a sniper rifle and scope in the bushes, she begins to worry that there are more than fighting words at stake.

And when a notorious domestic abuser is found dead the next day, suspicions turn to Alala herself, who was overheard bragging that she would take him down. Tensions deepen when connections are drawn between Alala and two similar, previous deaths.

But Sarah Booth doesn’t want to believe Alala is a murderer, and when the professor shows up at Sarah Booth’s doorstep, asking her to find the real criminal, Sarah Booth embarks on a case stretching across the Delta. With their relationship still at an impasse, Lisa sees an opportunity to find out just how good she is on her own. Review of Punning With Scissors

Synopsis:

1 DOWN: A PERSON OF INTEREST

Quinn Carr has been quietly creating crosswords for the Chestnut Station Chronicle in her small Colorado town since she was in high school, but she has yet to solve the puzzle of how to make a living from her passion. So she lives with her parents and works at the local diner, catering to regulars like The Retireds, a charming if cantankerous crew of elderly men. The most recent member to join the group is a recently retired tailor, the unfortunately named Hugh Pugh.

4-LETTER WORD FOR “IMPALE”

But Hugh’s misfortune dramatically increases when he’s arrested for stabbing his husband with a pair of fabric shears. With a cryptic crossword clue left at the crime scene, Quinn seems tailor-made for solving this murder. The local police may be determined to pin the crime on the kindly tailor, but Quinn will use her penchant for puzzles and what her therapist calls her “obsessive coping mechanism” to get the clues to line up and catch the real culprit—before the killer boxes her in. . . . (  Goodreads)

Review:

This time around, one of the Retireds from the restaurant is accused of killing their spouse.  Quinn does not know him well, but she can tell how much he loved his husband and feels that they have the wrong person.  She is going to work very hard to prove this and see that justice is served. She will need the help of her friend, Rico, who happens to be a policeman, to get to the bottom of this.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions took me on an adventurous ride with Quinn and Rico.  The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read.  The mystery was well plotted and there were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I am sure that Quinn and Rico will find another mystery to solve in the next book.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Review of Death By Equine

Death By Equine

Annette Dashofy

5 Stars

Synopsis:

Misplaced trust

Veterinarian Jessie Cameron agrees to fill in for her mentor, Doc Lewis, at Riverview Racetrack so he can take a long-overdue vacation. When he’s tragically killed by one of his equine patients the night before he’s supposed to leave, Jessie quickly suspects the death is anything but accidental. Her search for the truth is thwarted by everyone from well-meaning friends to the police, including her soon-to-be-ex-husband. Undaunted, she discovers layers of illegal activities and deceit being perpetrated by the man she thought of as a father figure, creating a growing list of suspects with reason to want Doc dead. Too late, she realizes that her dogged quest for the truth has put her in the crosshairs of a devious killer desperate to silence her. Permanently. (Goodreads)

Review:

Jessie is a veterinarian who has her own practice but has agreed to help out at Riverview Racetrack while her mentor takes a vacation with his wife.  But before he can get away, he gets a call from the racetrack to see one of his patients.  Unfortunately, he is trampled to death by the horse.  The authorities believe it was a tragic accident, but Jessie does not believe that.  She sets out to prove that there was actually a murder and to prove who did the deed.

The characters are well rounded, well developed and three dimensional.  Jessie is a strong character and she is very smart.  She thought she knew Doc, the vet that was trampled, but the more she learns, the more she realizes that she did not.  She will have to put her disappointment aside and work at solving the mystery.

The writing style flowed smoothly and it defined the characters very clearly by their actions and words.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the first page.  The mystery was well plotted and had numerous twists and turns that kept me engaged until the very end.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted mystery.  I hope that this book is the beginning of the series instead of a stand-alone book.  But either way, it was a very well written mystery and I greatly enjoyed it.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

Seaside Cove amateur sleuths Rick and Alexandra Atwood are back!

Seaside Cove Bed & Breakfast owner Rick Atwood is again called on to assist his friend, Chief of Police Adam Cunningham, with a murder investigation. The case seems straightforward enough. Clive Crabbe, who has a quick temper and a strong jealous streak, was found hunched over the victim after the man made advances toward Clive’s ex-wife.

A murder investigation is the last thing Rick wants right now. The B&B is booked solid. The town is inundated with tourists and news reporters chasing stories about treasure thieves. And Rick’s wedding to Marquetta Weiss is just weeks away. As if that wasn’t enough, Rick’s eleven-year-old daughter Alex is not only itching to help the cops solve another murder, but she’s forming an unhealthy friendship with a B&B guest.

As the murder investigation progresses, Rick realizes Alex’s new friend could be at the center of everything. The worst part is that Alex may be the one person capable of cracking the case.

Once upon a time, in a life he’d rather forget, Terry Ambrose, tracked down deadbeats for a living. He also hired big guys with tow trucks to steal cars-but only when negotiations failed. Those years of chasing deadbeats taught him many valuable life lessons such as-always keep your car in the garage. Today, Terry likes fast, funny mysteries and cool photography. He writes the Trouble in Paradise McKenna Mysteries and organized an anthology to benefit Read Aloud America. He fondly likens his efforts to those of a blind man herding cats.

Avery Keene, a brilliant young law clerk for the legendary Justice Howard Wynn, is doing her best to hold her life together—excelling in an arduous job with the court while also dealing with a troubled family. When the shocking news breaks that Justice Wynn—the cantankerous swing vote on many current high-profile cases—has slipped into a coma, Avery’s life turns upside down. She is immediately notified that Justice Wynn has left instructions for her to serve as his legal guardian and power of attorney. Plunged into an explosive role she never anticipated, Avery finds that Justice Wynn had been secretly researching one of the most controversial cases before the court—a proposed merger between an American biotech company and an Indian genetics firm, which promises to unleash breathtaking results in the medical field. She also discovers that Wynn suspected a dangerously related conspiracy that infiltrates the highest power corridors of Washington.

As political wrangling ensues in Washington to potentially replace the ailing judge whose life and survival Avery controls, she begins to unravel a carefully constructed, chesslike sequence of clues left behind by Wynn. She comes to see that Wynn had a much more personal stake in the controversial case and realizes his complex puzzle will lead her directly into harm’s way in order to find the truth. While Justice Sleeps is a cunningly crafted, sophisticated novel, layered with myriad twists and a vibrant cast of characters. Drawing on her astute inside knowledge of the court and political landscape, Stacey Abrams shows herself to be not only a force for good in politics and voter fairness but also a major new talent in suspense fiction.
