Death and Croissants (A Follet Valley Mystery) by [Ian Moore]

‘A joyous read.’ ALAN CARR

‘A very funny page-turner. Fantastique!’ ADAM KAY, COMEDIAN AUTHOR OF THIS IS GOING TO HURT

‘A writer of immense wit and charm.’ PAUL SINHA, ITV’s THE CHASE

‘Ian is one of my favourite writers; this is hilarious and a great mystery too.’ JANEY GODLEY

THE FIRST NOVEL IN THE ENTHRALLING FOLLET VALLEY SERIES, BY TV/RADIO REGULAR IAN MOORE

Richard is a middle-aged Englishman who runs a B&B in the fictional Val de Follet in the Loire Valley. Nothing ever happens to Richard, and really that’s the way he likes it.

One day, however, one of his older guests disappears, leaving behind a bloody handprint on the wallpaper. Another guest, the exotic Valérie, persuades a reluctant Richard to join her in investigating the disappearance.

Richard remains a dazed passenger in the case until things become really serious and someone murders Ava Gardner, one of his beloved hens… and you don’t mess with a fellow’s hens!

Unputdownable mystery set in rural France, by TV/radio regular and bestselling author Ian Moore – perfect for fans of Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club

Everyone is wanting mort! – praise for Death and Croissants:

Death and Croissants is a far funnier book than a story about a bloody murder has any right to be’. Josh Widdicombe

‘This is like two great books in one, a tricksy whodunnit, and a really, really funny story.’ Jason Manford

‘Good food and a laugh-out-loud mystery. What more could anyone want in these dark times?” Mark Billingham

Death and Croissants is such a relentless rollercoaster ride of laughs and twists, it should come with a height restriction and health warning.’ Matt Forde

‘Sharp, slick and surprising – like the author himself – Death and Croissants is the Loire Valley’s answer to Murder on the Orient Express. I’d marry him tomorrow (Richard, the protagonist; Ian too).’ Cally Beaton

‘Though I disagree with the opinions on muesli and the hen naming system that are in this book, I will let those pass and say that it is funny, pacy and very entertaining! It also has short chapters – I find many modern novels take far too long to get to the next chapter, but there’s no hanging about here’. Robin Ince

‘I like my mysteries like I like my croissants – full of joy and not able to put them down until I’ve finished them! Ian is a master of wit on stage, and he has translated that to the page brilliantly. I loved this book.’ Zoe Lyons

‘I’ve always been a fan of Ian Moore’s stand up so I was really looking forward to reading this book. And it’s exactly what I hoped for. The same beautifully descriptive use of language, the quiet excellence of the storytelling, the understated wit that catches you unawares.’ Ian Stone

‘I’d never connected the words “death” and “croissants” before, but now they’re inextricably linked. It’s a rollicking qui-dunnit with as many twists as the Loire itself’. Stephen Clarke, author of 1000 Years of Annoying the French

‘I love this book: it’s so vivid and bright. I’m instantly in France with a glass of wine in my hand when I pick it up. It’s so funny, so different and like being on holiday and watching a classic film all at once.’ Laura Lexx, Comedian and author of Klopp Actually

‘Just like the Loire’s other great export, Sancerre, Ian Moore’s prose is reassuringly dry, beautifully constructed, and deeply satisfying. Marty Wilson, Australian Comic of the Year (Amazon)

A Murder of Convenience (The Chronicles of Brother Hermitage Book 22) by [Howard of Warwick]

Medieval Crime Comedy continues unabated as Howard of Warwick refuses to be abated.

From the Best-Selling author of this very peculiar genre comes yet more medieval murder with the usual dash of nonsense.

This time, there’s murder in the air; and in the bushes, the castles, the highways and byways. And Brother Hermitage is caught in the middle of the lot; as usual.

Even though he’s expecting a murder to be dropped in his lap at any moment, the arrival of this one and the manner of its delivery take him completely by surprise.
As the tale unravels, a simple murder and an investigation to discover the culprit would be a bit of a relief.

But the Normans seem to be at the bottom of this and their intentions are wholly dishonourable. When the church puts its nose in the mix, Wat the Weaver concludes that they are completely out of their depth.

But there is a victim, or there might be, and action must be taken.

A journey to Nottingham reunites them with some old friends, well, friends-ish, but they seem as confused as everyone else. At least Cwen finds an ally, which gives Wat plenty to worry about.
When the weaver gets drunk and comes up with the most ridiculous suggestion for a murder investigation that any of them have ever heard, it’s clear that things have gone downhill very quickly.

With very important people showing a great interest in this business, Hermitage has to be very careful with his, “aha”; if he can even come up with one that makes sense.

Who did whatever it is that might have been done?
Will everyone live happily ever after?
Were they living happily to begin with?

Read A Murder of Convenience and there’s a small chance you might find out.

And then there’s the crime of Mrs Grod’s cooking.

Reviews for the previous volume continue a trend

5* Brilliant tale of mayhem and murder
5* Genius, funny, endearing and a proper page turner

Framed and Frosted (Cupcake Catering Mystery Series)
by Kim Davis

I love the plot in Framed and Frosted. Along with a well-crafted mystery, a lot of other things happen in the book. As much as I’d love to divulge those things, I won’t! You’ll have to find them out for yourself.
~Christy’s Cozy Corners

Kim Davis is an awesome storyteller and her books are amazing treats that should not be missed!
~Escape With Dollycas Into A Good Book

This story does pack in a lot of sub-plots . . . they only add to the story and do not detract at all. I was amazed at how the author kept everything flowing smoothly and wove each story succinctly into the major plot.

Book Review: John Green's Turtles All the Way Down is a Page Turner – The Pel Mel

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Emory once again has a mystery to solve, this one being who killed the host of a catering party her sister was working.  Tillie is a hoot and she gets Emory and herself in some funny predicaments. But they are also getting pretty good at figuring out the killer and the culprit should be worried.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions added a lot to my enjoyment.  The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.   The mystery was well plotted and there were enough clues to sift through  and suspects to consider.  I really enjoyed trying to figure out the murderer.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I really love this series and the author’s way of telling a story, and if you have not read this series yet, I suggest you do.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

Mrs. Claus and the Santaland Slayings

Synopsis:

It’s the first Christmas in Santaland for April Claus–but it may also be her last unless she can uncover a villain with a killer Christmas wish. . .

Love is full of surprises–though few compare to realizing that you’re marrying the real-life Santa. April Claus dearly loves her new husband, Nick, but adjusting to life in the North Pole is not all sugarplums and candy canes. Especially when a cantankerous elf named Giblet Hollyberry is killed–felled by a black widow spider in his stocking–shortly after publicly arguing with Nick.

Christmastown is hardly a hotbed of crime, aside from mishaps caused by too much eggnog, but April disagrees with Constable Crinkle’s verdict of accidental death. As April sets out to find the culprit, it’ll mean putting the future of Christmas on the line–and hoping her own name isn’t on a lethal naughty list . . . (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well developed and well rounded.  It was nice to meet April and Nick, but I would have preferred to meet them under different circumstances. There were a lot of characters to meet, and at times I got a little confused who was who. That is only my opinion and others may not agree with me. April has her hands full trying to find the killer of an unfriendly elf so that her husband does not take the blame.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning.  The writing style flows smoothly  and the book is an easy read.  The mystery was well plotted and although I figured out the culprit fairly early, it did not detract from my enjoyment.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  And if you like Christmas sprinkled in with your reading, grab this book and enjoy.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Titus Strong finds himself in a once familiar situation—a gathering of the distinguished, wealthy members of the upper class. When he’d moved to this small seaside town, he thought he’d left all of that behind.

The gentlemen have need of a counselor to draw up documents for the establishment of the Whitby Yacht Club, and who better to call upon than the town’s most famous lawyer? It’s a simple task that will bring him a healthy fee to tide him over until he acquires additional clients.

But when one of the rivals for commodore of the club is found murdered in his study, the attorney’s role undergoes a sudden change. Although reluctant, he agrees to employ his skills in defense of one of the members, even though he’s not sure of his innocence.

Is he once again trapped into defending a guilty man? Or is his new client truly blameless?

The only way he’ll find out is to lead his own investigation in a search for the killer. Along with his secretary, Elisabeth Wade, and former Pinkerton Detective Owen Campbell, Titus must once again solve a murder. (Amazon)

My name is Lottie Lemon, and I see dead people. Okay, so I rarely see dead people, mostly I see furry creatures of the dearly departed variety, who have come back from the other side to warn me of their previous owner’s impending doom.

It’s the Fourth of July, the festivities at Honey lake are going full throttle, the sun is hot, and murder is afoot. Not only are Noah and Everett in dire straits with the mob but the three of us have stumbled into a double homicide. And by the looks of it, Carlotta and Charlie’s nemesis might have bitten the big one too. Evie is making her daddy insane with worry when she sets her sights on a college boy, and my mother and her wily boyfriend are walking a tightrope when it comes to the law.The Fourth of July in Honey Hollow is shaping up to be explosive.

Lottie Lemon has a brand new bakery to tend to, a budding romance with perhaps one too many suitors, and she has the supernatural ability to see the dead—which are always harbingers for ominous things to come. Throw in a string of murders, and her insatiable thirst for justice, and you’ll have more chaos than you know what to do with.

Two Minutes Past Midnight: Magic and Mayhem Universe (Midnight Chronicles Book 2) by [Jane Hinchey]

How in the Goddess’s name did I get stuck at the Bewildered Retirement Home in Hexville, Kentucky? One word. Baba Yaga. Actually, that’s two, and it’s a name, not a word, but whatever.

I thought my stint as a magic Bounty Hunter was over, but it appears Baba Yaga has other ideas. I can do as she suggests and investigate the shenanigans going down in the Bewitched Retirement Home where paranormals prep for the supernatural afterlife, or I can find myself enjoying some quality me-time back in the pokey.

Easy choice.

Turns out someone has been planting bodies in Flora, the plant Goddess’s garden, and she’s not happy about it. And who can blame her, although I have to say her hydrangeas are looking incredible!

But Witches aren’t the only residents of Bewildered. Now I’m up to my neck in fury harpies, chaos fairies, slayer elves, and Bog Dragons. And while they may sound terrifying, watching them putter around on mobility scooters and walking frames, I’m hard-pressed to think any one of them is capable of murder. Until they all confess!

Welcome to Twinkerhell, where wands have a life of their own, cauldrons create indiscriminate potions, and storytime takes on a whole new meaning.

Meet magical Bounty Hunter, Midnight, in book two of the Midnight Chronicles and part of the Magic & Mayhem Universe. Full of mystery, romance, and laughs, this book is suitable for lovers of cozy mystery and paranormal women’s fiction. (Amazon)
