Murder at Sea Captain’s Inn (A Book Magic Mystery)
by Melissa Bourbon

MURDER AT SEA CAPTAIN’S INN provides an intriguing multilayered mystery. The Lost Colony, the Lane family curse, family relationships, and mysterious connections converge creating an intensely captivating story.
~Cozy Up With Kathy

There are several layers to this mystery and the magical power of bibliomancy became one of the best parts of the story . . . This is the first book I’ve read in the series and really loved it!
~Books To The Ceiling

Full of plenty of clues while still keeping you guessing until the end. The use of bibliomancy is a nice touch as well as the adorable deaf dog Sailor.
~Books a Plenty Book Reviews

Ms. Bourbon writes in a way that makes the reader captivated and completely part of the story. I love this story and the characters.
~Baroness’ Book Trove

The magical realism elements (the family curse, the bibliomancy) are so intriguing to me and keep me fully engaged in the read. Add in whispers about the Lost Colony, like Murder at Sea Captain’s Inn does, and I’m even giddier.

Generation after generation of Lane women die in childbirth, while the sea claims the men.

Pippin Lane Hawthorne’s grand opening of Sea Captain’s Inn is tainted when a scholar studying the Lost Colony of Roanoke is brutally murdered. Like the black crow that hangs around the old house, could the untimely death be a harbinger of dark things to come?

When her twin brother, Grey, begins bucking the curse by risking his life in the waters of the Outer Banks, Pippin lives in terror that he’ll be the next Lane male to be swallowed by the sea. Now she must use her gift of bibliomancy to save her brother, solve the murder, and end a two thousand year old pact.

Review Of The Moonshine Shack Murder

The Moonshine Shack Murder

A Southern Homebrew Mystery, Book #1

Diane Kelly

5 Stars

Synopsis:

In this intoxicating new cozy mystery series, the future for modern-day moonshiner Hattie Hayes looks bright–until death darkens the doorstep of her Moonshine Shack.

The Hayes family has made moonshine in Chattanooga since the days of Prohibition, and Hattie is happy to continue the tradition, serving up fun, fruity flavors in mason jars for locals and tourists alike. All signs indicate her new ‘shine shop will be a smashing success. What’s more, mounted police officer Marlon Landers has taken a shine to Hattie. For the first time ever, the stars seemed to have aligned in both her work and romantic life. But when a body ends up on her store’s doorstep alongside a broken jar of her Firefly Moonshine, it just might be lights out for her fledgling business.

The homicide detective can’t seem to identify the person who killed the owner of a nearby bar. The only witness is Hattie’s longhaired gray cat, and Smoky isn’t talking. When the detective learns that the victim and Hattie had a heated exchange shortly before his murder, she becomes her prime suspect.

Lest Hattie end up behind bars like her bootlegging great-grandfather a century before, she must distill the evidence herself and serve the killer a swift shot of justice.  (Amazon)

Reveiw:

This is the first book in a new series and I thought it was quite good.

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  I really enjoyed getting to meet Hattie, her grandfather and her girlfriends.  She has been busy getting her moonshine shop ready to open and praying it will be successful.  When someone is killed outside Hattie’s shop, things begin to go south.  Hattie is considered a person of interest and knows she has to find the killer before she gets thrown in jail.  She will need all the help she can get.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning.  The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The mystery is well plotted and there were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider and the mystery was not easily solved.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I cannot wait to see what adventure awaits Hattie next.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Berkeley Publishing Group, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Review of Lost And Found

Lost And Found

Resort At Castaway Bay

Kathi Daley

5 Stars

Synopsis:

Sydney Whitmore, a forensic psychologist living in San Francisco, moves home to Shipwreck Island, and the resort owned and operated by her family, after tragedy strikes leaving her struggling for a way to make sense of things. After finding out about the assault of an old friend, which has left him comatose, she renews her relationship with Ezra Reinhold, a reclusive billionaire who enjoys poking around in cold cases and has the means to hire the best people to find the answers no one else has been able to.

In book 2 in the series Syd is asked to help a man regain his memories after showing up a decade after he went missing with no memory of where he’d been since disappearing from his home when he was eight. Meanwhile, she continues to look for answers relating to Riley’s attack, which seems an impossible task, until Kelly invites her to a meeting with Ezra’s group who all pitch in to offer insight.

Bonus Material: Text and photos for Emily by the Sea and Emily’s Kitchen contributed by Christy Turner  (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Sydney is enjoying spending time with her family and having a working vacation.  She has to try and help a teenage boy remember what happened to him ten years ago and where he has been this whole time.  And she is also trying to figure out what happened to her friend, Riley, that led to him getting attacked and being in a coma.  And she wants to spend time with her sister and have some fun.  She will be very busy.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and took me on a great journey.  I really enjoyed the fact that although there are mysteries involved, Sydney did not go chasing after any bad guys and did not take unnecessary chances. This is unlike most of the cozies I read.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well written cozy mystery.  I am looking forward to spending more time with Sydney and her family.

Family or fame?

When his newborns are stolen, he turns to Slade Kelly, an unorthodox private investigator, to find them. It’s a race against time to find the girls before they’re sold to the highest bidder.

Glamour Ghoul: A Lady of the Lake School for Girls Cozy Mystery (The Vega Bloodmire Wicked Witch Mystery Series Book 11) by [Sarina Dorie]

Wicked witches. Murder. Mystery.

When a serial killer of werewolves is on the loose, who are you going to call?

Not only is Vega Bloodmire a teacher at the most prestigious magical boarding school for witches, and a powerful witch, but she also has a curse for getting herself into situations where she has to solve mysteries—even when she should be minding her own business. She thrives when she is able to use skilled and powerful magic, crush her enemies, and destroy those who would harm her students and those she loves.

She is less comfortable being a good role model, consoling with hugs and kind words, and being “nice.” As is often the case, Vega has found herself in a most uncomfortable situation, putting her skills to the test. She is now guardian to a fifteen-year-old girl with cancer. When her charge insists on taking care of an injured puppy, it is only one of many problems Vega faces at the close of a school year.

When a connection is made between a victim who died after being shot with silver bullets and the puppy’s wound, Vega suspects someone is on the hunt for werewolves and shifters. As a shifter herself, Vega understands the stigma of being unable to control magical transformations and the way society shuns those who are different.

In order to pay for her charge’s medical treatment, Vega decides to hunt a poacher and acquire all his silver bullets. If she happens to do something “nice” for the betterment of Witchkin society and gets rid of a werewolf serial killer in the process, she isn’t opposed to the idea—so long as no one tries to thank her for being selfless and good.

Can Vega discover who has been killing werewolves before another victim dies?

This book starts with Vega Bloodmire’s life before working at Womby’s School for Wayward Witches when she was a new and inexperienced teacher at Lady of the Lake School for Girls. GLAMOUR GHOUL is the 11th book in the series of mysteries taking place at a magical academy, but these whodunnits are fine to be read in any order.

A Good Day for Chardonnay: A Novel (Sunshine Vicram Book 2) by [Darynda Jones]

Running a small-town police force in the mountains of New Mexico should be a smooth, carefree kind of job. Sadly, full-time Sheriff—and even fuller-time coffee guzzler—Sunshine Vicram, didn’t get that memo.

All Sunshine really wants is one easy-going day. You know, the kind that starts with coffee and a donut (or three) and ends with take-out pizza and a glass of chardonnay (or seven). Turns out, that’s about as easy as switching to decaf. (What kind of people do that? And who hurt them?)

Before she can say iced mocha latte, Sunny’s got a bar fight gone bad, a teenage daughter hunting a serial killer and, oh yes, the still unresolved mystery of her own abduction years prior. All evidence points to a local distiller, a dangerous bad boy named Levi Ravinder, but Sun knows he’s not the villain of her story. Still, perhaps beneath it all, he possesses the keys to her disappearance. At the very least, beneath it all, he possesses a serious set of abs. She’s seen it. Once. Accidentally.

Between policing a town her hunky chief deputy calls four cents short of a nickel, that pesky crush she has on Levi which seems to grow exponentially every day, and an irascible raccoon that just doesn’t know when to quit, Sunny’s life is about to rocket to a whole new level of crazy.

Yep, definitely a good day for chardonnay.

Dead as a Duck (A Washington Whodunit)
by Colleen J Shogan

There are plenty of twists and subplots throughout that keep the story fresh and mystery front and center. I love when I can get lost in the minutia of small town living and let the puzzle take a back seat to a really good tale.

Praise for the Series

“The mystery is perplexing—for Kit and company, and for me—and well done. I was impressed by the complexity of the murder plot. I enjoyed the political theme, and all the details about lobbyists.” —Jane Reads

“To someone who has mastered that uniquely Washington skill of bobbling two cell phones and a glass of wine without spilling a drop, solving a murder is practically child’s play.” —HillRag

“A solid choice for political junkies and readers of Maggie Sefton, Fred Hunter, and Mike Lawson.” —Library Journal

“The fourth volume in author Colleen J. Shogan’s simply outstanding ‘Washington Whodunit’ series, K Street Killing is a consistently entertaining read with many an unexpected twist and turn by a true master of the genre.” —Midwest Book Review

A Cozy Mystery That’s a Real Hit!

First they warned Jocelyn Johnson.

Then they ticketed Jocelyn Johnson.

Then someone murdered Jocelyn Johnson.

And Cara Mia Delgatto was looking for a lost ball when found Jocelyn “JJ” Johnson face down in a sand trap. Gave a whole new meaning to “take a drop.”

It wasn’t a surprise. The neighbors hated JJ for the reckless way she drove her golf cart. Sure, she lived on the grounds of a swanky golf club, and yes, she had tons of money, but JJ ruined flowerbeds, terrorized grandkids, and made a nuisance of herself.

Except…except…she’s quiet now. Lying there in the dirt at Hole #6. Someone bashed in JJ’s head. (Who would risk ruining an expensive Homna golf club like that?)

Cara doesn’t want to get involved. But when Gerta Hunsickler is named the prime suspect, and Gerta’s husband is so angry at his wife that he’s starting divorce proceedings, Cara can’t sit on her hands. She knows what it’s like to be unfairly accused. So she promises to take a swing at it and see if she can hit a long drive down the fairway of justice!

Meanwhile, back at The Treasure Chest, Cara’s friends are busy creating fabulous and fun Mother’s Day gifts. There are two brides-to-be working for Cara, and their two mothers-in-law-to-be have decided not to play nice. Can you say, “Mama’s boy” ten times really fast? I thought you could.

If you love warm-hearted, clean books, that feature female amateur sleuths, fur babies, family, and friends, you’ll love this charming DIY/recycling/upcycling series set on the Southeast Coast of Florida.

“Our best friend, our next-door neighbor, and ourselves with just a touch of the outrageous.” That’s how RT Book Review describes Joanna’s protagonist, Kiki Lowenstein. The truth is that’s a pretty good description of Joanna Campbell Slan as well.

Joanna is a New York Times Bestselling, USA Today Bestselling, and Amazon Bestselling author as well as a woman prone to frequent bursts of crafting frenzy, leaving her with burns from her hot glue gun and paint on her clothes. And the mess? Let’s not even go there.

Otherwise, Joanna’s a productive author with more than 80 written projects to her credit. Her non-fiction work includes how to books, a college textbook for public speakers, and books of personal essays (think Chicken Soup for the Soul).

Currently, she writes five fiction series: The Kiki Lowenstein Mystery Series (Agatha Award Finalist, contemporary, St. Louis setting, crafting), the Cara Mia Delgatto Mystery Series (contemporary, Florida setting, DIY, and recycling), the Jane Eyre Chronicles (Daphne du Maurier Award Winner, 1830s England, based on Charlotte Brontë’s classic), the Sherlock Holmes Fantasy Thrillers (late 1800s, based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s books), and the Zen Cozy Mystery Series (launch 2021).

A former TV talk show host, college teacher, and public relations specialist, Joanna was one of the early Chicken Soup for the Soul contributors. She won a Silver Anvil for her work on the original FarmAid concert to benefit farmers.

In her ongoing quest never to see snow again, Joanna lives with her husband and their Havanese puppy, Jax, on an island off the coast of Florida. You can email her at jcslan@joannaslan.com or visit her website at https://linktr.ee/jcslan
