In the autumnal chill of Newport, Rhode Island, at the close of the nineteenth century, journalist Emma Cross discovers an instance of cold-blooded murder on the grounds of a mansion . . .

Following the death of her uncle, Cornelius Vanderbilt, in September 1899, a somber Emma is in no mood for one of Newport’s extravagant parties. But to keep Vanderbilt’s reckless son Neily out of trouble, she agrees to accompany him to an Elizabethan fete on the lavish grounds of Wakehurst, the Ochre Point “cottage” modeled after an English palace, owned by Anglophile James Van Alen.

Held in Wakehurst’s English-style gardens, the festivities will include a swordplay demonstration, an archery competition, scenes from Shakespeare’s plays, and even a joust. As Emma wanders the grounds distracted by grief, she overhears a fierce argument between a man and a woman behind a tall hedge. As the joust begins, she’s drawn by the barking of Van Alen’s dogs and finds a man on the ground, an arrow through his chest.

The victim is one of the 400’s most influential members, Judge Clayton Schuyler. Could one of the countless criminals he’d imprisoned over the years have returned to seek revenge—or could one of his own family members have targeted him? With the help of her beau Derrick Andrews and Detective Jesse Whyte, Emma begins to learn the judge was not the straight arrow he appeared to be. As their investigation leads them in ever-widening circles, Emma will have to score a bull’s eye to stop the killer from taking another life . . . (Amazon)

The Fragile Edge (A Jimmy Vega Mystery Book 6) by [Suzanne Chazin]

A sniper attack propels Latino cop Jimmy Vega on a twisting hunt for a predator who stalks the unforgiving landscape of immigrant America. Probing beyond the hardships of the journey north, Suzanne Chazin’s taut and timely novel explores the perils that await the hopeful once they reach their destination—and the price they must pay to survive . . .

Jimmy Vega straddles two worlds – the hardscrabble Bronx where he grew up as the child of a Puerto Rican single mother, and the upscale, mostly white, suburban county where he now serves as a police detective. Yet despite his sense of never belonging, he’s a good and decent cop—even if the multi-million-dollar civil suit he’s facing says otherwise.

His own troubles take a back seat when Vega learns that a court officer has just been shot and killed while transporting a controversial judge across the courthouse lot. Vega quickly surmises that the judge was the real target. She’s earned the ire of alt-right hate groups for going soft on undocumented defendants accused of petty crimes. The sole witness to the sniper’s identity is a Guatemalan girl traveling by bus from the border. And now, she’s vanished—melted into a community fearful of the police. Her days are numbered if Vega can’t get to her before the killer does.

But as Vega and his girlfriend, Adele Figueroa, head of the local outreach center, probe deeper into the shadowy farm community where immigrants toil in horrifying conditions, they tap into a chilling discovery. One that offers Vega a stark choice: keep quiet and be lauded as a hero, knowing he let the real villain go. Or risk everything for an ugly truth no one wants him to find . . . (Amazon)

Railroaded 4 Murder (Sophie Kimball Mystery)
by J.C. Eaton

The authors have penned a great mystery with plenty of suspects. The antics of Harriet and the Booked 4 Murder Book Club members will have you in stitches as their investigation, Operation Agatha takes off.
~Escape With Dollycas Into A Good Book

While planning her wedding, Sophie “Phee” Kimball gets sidetracked by the murder of a model train enthusiast . . .

Phee’s marriage to Marshall Gregory promises to be the wedding of the year in Arizona’s Sun City West—that is, if you ask her mother Harriet. But before she can walk down the aisle, it looks like she has to solve one more murder. At a model train exhibit, Phee, Harriet, and their beloved Chiweenie, Streetman, discover the body of Sun City West’s railroad club president, with an incriminating tap shoe near his lifeless corpse.

Wilbur Maines may have loved model trains but apparently he was not a model husband. There are rumors of affairs with hot-to-trot hobbyists the Choo-Choo Chicks. The police suspect his wife—and Harriet’s friend—Roxanne, who dances with the Rhythm Tappers, but Phee’s mom is convinced they’re on the wrong track. Before the poor woman is railroaded into spending the rest of her life behind bars, Phee, Harriet, and the book club ladies will need to do some fancy footwork, infiltrate the dance group, and find the real culprit before the killer leaves the station . . .

As a matter of fact, Nate wasn’t the one stepping in anything unsavory. I was. And it happened early the next morning, before I was fully awake and my coffee had a chance to kick in. It was Saturday morning and Marshall leaned over the bed and gave me a gentle nudge.

Last night went by way too fast,” he said. “At least I don’t have any out-of-town cases this week unless something comes up. I’ll get those steaks on the grill the minute I get home this afternoon. Lucky you, it’s your Saturday off.”

“Yay. And I plan to snooze for another half hour at least. Then I’ll tackle a few home projects I’ve been putting off.”

“Forget the projects. Try to have a fun day. See you later, hon.”

I closed my eyes, but I was too awake to sleep yet not awake enough to function. I threw a sweatshirt on over my nightshirt and walked into the kitchen to make myself a cup of coffee. I had barely taken the first few sips when the phone rang.

My mother’s voice made my hair stand on edge, like static electricity. “Phee! You’re up. Good. How soon can you get to the Beardsley Rec Center?”

“Please tell me this is a general reference question and not something else. It’s a quarter to eight.”

“Cecilia thinks she might have discovered a dead body in the train exhibit next to the horseshoe tossing area.”

“Then have her call the posse. And what was Cecilia doing by the horseshoe area at this ungodly hour?”

“She goes for her morning walk around Beardsley’s perimeter every day.”

“Like I said, have her call the Sun City West posse.”

“It’s not as easy as you think. Cecilia has, well . . . a reputation with them, so she called me instead. Streetman and I are going over there right now.”

Terrific. A possible dead body and a neurotic Chiweenie. There’s a recipe for disaster. “What did you mean by a ‘reputation with them’?”

“Long story. Last year, during one of Cecilia’s walks, she was positive she saw a dead body by the small berm between the Ramada picnic area and the main building. She was convinced it was a woman with a large, round face and long, brown hair that was somewhat unkempt.”

“And?”

“It turned out to be a large river rock with one of those palm fronds wrapped around it. Those fronds fall off the trees any time there’s a breeze.”

“Oh brother. Was that it?”

“Not exactly. A few months ago, when she was leaving church in the evening, she glanced into the car parked next to her and was adamant there was a dead woman in the back seat. Even went as far as describing the woman’s deep-set wrinkles and scraggly hair.”

“I take it there was no dead body.”

“Nope. It was someone’s scarecrow they bought earlier in the day at one of the local nurseries.”

“Um, it sounds like this is going to be a wasted trip for you and Streetman. Still, if Cecilia is that concerned, she needs to call the posse.”

“Oh, she’s concerned all right. Says she saw an outstretched arm.”

“An outstretched arm? That could be anything! A large tree branch, a pipe, one of those decorative wooden borders—”

“Maybe the third time’s the charm. Maybe Cecilia really did find a body.”

Pancake House Mystery, Book #8

Sarah Fox

5 Stars

Synopsis:

Sarah Fox continues her USA Today bestselling series with a delicious new cozy mystery set around the Flip Side pancake house in the quirky beach town of Wildwood Cove—a treat for fans of culinary cozies by Joanne Fluke.

Murder is on the menu in the latest Pancake House Mystery, as a treasure trove of old letters spurs a killer to take some unsavory action. . . .

This summer, Wildwood Cove is hosting a special event, Wild West Days, to celebrate the town’s storied past. Wildwood Cove’s museum is also getting a new lease of life thanks to a longtime resident’s generous bequest. Several locals, including Marley McKinney-Collins, owner of the Flip Side pancake house, offer to transfer artifacts to the beautiful restored Victorian that will become the museum’s home. But there’s an unappetizing development when a volunteer, Jane Fassbinder, is found dead—bludgeoned with an antique clothes iron.

Marley can never resist a piping hot mystery, and this one seems especially intriguing. Jane had recently unearthed some love letters from the Jack of Diamonds, a notorious thief who plagued Wildwood Cove over a century ago. As more locals meet with dangerous “accidents,” it seems that someone is determined to keep that correspondence buried deep in the past. And unless Marley can sift through the likely suspects, she too could end up being nothing but history. . . .

Includes pancake recipes right from the Flip Side menu!

Praise for Sarah Fox’s Wine and Punishment

“Readers will cheer this brisk, literate addition to the world of small-town cozies.”

Kirkus Reviews

“Hits all the right notes—a unique setting, friends and family, an intriguing mystery, and even the promise of romance.”

—Sofie Ryan, New York Times bestselling author of the Second Chance Cat mysteries.

“Draws readers into the fold of suspects in Shady Creek and doesn’t let go until the culprit is uncovered. There are laugh-out-loud moments, hold-your-breath moments, and moments when you’ll think you have the mystery figured out, but the surprises keep coming!”

USA Today bestselling author Amy M. Reade  (Amazon)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Marley is enjoying getting ready for the Wild West Days, a celebration honoring Wildwood Cove.  But, there is a murder and a hit-n-run

accident and Marley finds herself involved in both.  She will have to rely on her wits and the help of her employees to try and figure it out.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and it took me on a great adventure, one I did not want to end.  The mystery was well plotted and not easily solved.  I had the killer on my radar, along with a couple of other people.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I really like Marley and her friends, they feel like friends.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Review Of A Haunted Homecoming

The Haunted Homecoming

Southern Ghost Hunter Mystery, Book #10

Angie Fox

5 Stars

Synopsis:

Apple cider, bonfires, football, and—ghosts.

It’s homecoming weekend in Sugarland, Tennessee and ghost hunter Verity Long is tickled to see so many souls—living and dead—back in town to celebrate. But not all reunions are happy ones, and when Verity stumbles upon a dead body by the football field, it appears someone has already evened the score.  (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Verity’s mom has come to visit Sugarland for the homecoming festivities.  She is looking forward to seeing her best friend and spending time with her.  Instead, her best friend is found inside the time capsule.  Now Verity, with the help of Frankie, has to figure out who killed her.  And Frankie is dealing with his own problems with Molly, his girlfriend.  Verity has a lot to deal with, I hope she can handle it.

The writing style flows smoothly and it was a quick easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I was taken on a ghostly ride to see what would happen.  The mystery was well plotted and there were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through.

I thought  this book was very good.  I enjoyed getting to know Verity’s mom better and spending more time with Molly.  I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  And I cannot wait to find out the next mystery awaiting Verity.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

The Haunted Homecoming (Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries Book 10) by [Angie Fox]

New Releases For The Week Of August 22nd, 2021–Part 1

The Madness of Crowds: A Novel (Chief Inspector Gamache Novel Book 17) by [Louise Penny]

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache returns to Three Pines in #1 New York Times bestseller Louise Penny’s latest spellbinding novel

You’re a coward.

Time and again, as the New Year approaches, that charge is leveled against Armand Gamache.

It starts innocently enough.

While the residents of the Québec village of Three Pines take advantage of the deep snow to ski and toboggan, to drink hot chocolate in the bistro and share meals together, the Chief Inspector finds his holiday with his family interrupted by a simple request.

He’s asked to provide security for what promises to be a non-event. A visiting Professor of Statistics will be giving a lecture at the nearby university.

While he is perplexed as to why the head of homicide for the Sûreté du Québec would be assigned this task, it sounds easy enough. That is until Gamache starts looking into Professor Abigail Robinson and discovers an agenda so repulsive he begs the university to cancel the lecture.

They refuse, citing academic freedom, and accuse Gamache of censorship and intellectual cowardice. Before long, Professor Robinson’s views start seeping into conversations. Spreading and infecting. So that truth and fact, reality and delusion are so confused it’s near impossible to tell them apart.

Discussions become debates, debates become arguments, which turn into fights. As sides are declared, a madness takes hold.

Abigail Robinson promises that, if they follow her, ça va bien aller. All will be well. But not, Gamache and his team know, for everyone.

When a murder is committed it falls to Armand Gamache, his second-in-command Jean-Guy Beauvoir, and their team to investigate the crime as well as this extraordinary popular delusion.

And the madness of crowds. (Amazon)

Review of Deadly Delivery

Deadly Delivery

A Mail Carrier Cozy Mystery, Book #7

Tonya Kappes

5 Stars

Synopsis:

Welcome to Sugar Creek Gap. It’s a lovely small town. Small towns have their advantages, everyone is together to celebrate the good times and rallies together to comfort during the bad times. It also has its disadvantages, Everyone knows everyone and it’s a hotbed of gossip.

Bernadette gets into an argument with a cantankerous patron of her delivery route. When he winds up dead, Bernadette is the primary suspect, since she brought him biscuits as a peace offering!

With the assistance of her BFF Iris and her neighbor Revonda Gail, she works on clearing her name so she can have more time to spend with her family.  (Amazon)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Iris, Revonda Gail and Bernadette are getting along fine and things are going good.  Until Bernadette gets into an argument with one of her postal customers and he winds up dead.  Bernadette is a suspect and gets put on leave, which gives her plenty of time to look for the killer.  The three of them, along with The Front Porch Ladies, will have to find the culprit.  There are other things happening in Bernadette’s life that she will have to deal with.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive and these descriptions took me on a great Southern adventure.  The mystery was well plotted and I was surprised at who the murderer was.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  Grab your copy and enjoy yourself.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.
