Introducing the Miss Fits, ordinary women who do extra-ordinary things!

Every holiday season, Kiki Lowenstein plans 12 days of classes, her Holiday Craft Extravaganza. And every year, it nearly kills her.

This year is no exception. As the holiday season approaches, Kiki over-schedules herself and winds up running herself ragged. To make life even more stressful, she must fend off a stalker, a man determined to possess the object of his affection. But that’s only one problem.

Kiki’s ace full-time employee, Clancy, has HUGE decisions to make. How do you put aside your hurt and disappointment when you’ve been betrayed? Why should you upend your whole life because of another person’s mistake? Is it selfish to think of yourself first? As Clancy ponders questions, Kiki stands on the sidelines, knowing this is not her choice to make. And yet…Kiki feels Clancy’s agony.

Meanwhile, both of Kiki’s older kids are having problems with teachers. Kiki wonders, “At what point does being an involved parent tip over into being a helicopter parent?” There’s also a staff shortage that leaves Kiki in the lurch, both at home and at the store. Kiki might have found an answer to that dilemma when a mysterious woman applies for a job. Her name is Nona, and she claims to be an old friend of an old friend. But is she?

Nona seems too good to be true. Sadly, that might be the least of Kiki’s problems with the woman. Because Nona isn’t what she seems to be. Nona is a Miss Fit. (Amazon)

Spotlight On The Ginseng Conspiracy

On her way to attend a Halloween Ball, Kay Driscoll, a newcomer to town, witnesses the murder of a local professor. When the official coroner’s report rules the cause of death to be accidental and the community accepts the judgement, Kay decides to uncover the truth for herself. Through her personal investigations, Kay exposes a complex conspiracy, woven deep within the thriving local ginseng industry, that involves some of the more prominent figures and families of Sudbury Falls.

With her new friends, the free-spirited herbalist Deirdre and the untamed modern woman Elizabeth, Kay discusses new clues over tea and pastries at Sweet Marissa’s Patisserie, their crime-fighting headquarters. As Kay gets closer to the heart of the conspiracy, additional murders happen in quick succession. Before long, Kay learns that the villains are gunning for her, too. Phil, her musically talented but preoccupied husband, determined to keep her safe, withholds from her the one thing she needs most: the truth. (Goodreads)

The Ginseng Conspiracy (A Kay Driscoll Mystery Book 1) by [Susan Bernhardt]

When Kay Driscoll is heading to The Halloween Ball, she notices some people wearing hooded robes and wonders why they are wearing them.  She decides to follow them into an abandoned building, wondering if they are having a pre-Ball party.  What she sees makes her realize that the only type of party this may be is a “killer” party.  When she is almost discovered,  she runs away and narrowly escapes getting caught.  She does not know what to make of what she witnessed, and after she finds a dead body with her two best friends, she knows there is a murder to be solved.  The death is ruled an accidental drowning, but Kay knows better.  Kay and her two friends, Deirdre and Elizabeth, begin their own investigation into the murder.  When more dead bodies turn up, they know that they must be very careful before they end up deceased as well.

There is so much that I like about this book.  I think that the characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional.  I really enjoy the fact that Kay is an older woman with a family.  So many of the cozies I read have younger main characters and many do not have families.  Although the characters in these books are still relatable to me, Kay and her friends seem even more realistic and very engaging.  Her friends have quirky personalities and the three of them together meshed perfectly.  Kay’s husband seemed a little clueless most of the time but you could tell that he loves Kay.  I feel like they are friends I have known for a long time and I was catching up on their lives.  I think the author did a great job with these characters, especially since this is the first book in the series and I just met them.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I felt like I was right there watching all the action, instead of just reading about it.  The descriptions of the food, the Masquerade Ball and the setting in general are well done and never became repetitive or boring.

The mystery is carried on well throughout the book.  There are enough twists and turns to keep Kay and the reader guessing the whole time.  There is plenty of suspense and tension and I could not turn the pages fast enough.  There are a few times where my jaw dropped open while reading and I did not want to turn the page because I was worried about what was about to happen.  I think the ending is much more realistic than many other cozies I have read.  A lot of the times, the protagonist puts herself in grave danger at the end and someone else needs to rescue her.  That was not necessarily the case with this book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well plotted cozy mystery.  The second book, Murder Under The Tree, has already been released.  Do yourself a favor and grab both of these books and enjoy.  You will be happy that you did.

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Tessa and Gabby find themselves involved in another murder.  This time it is a person that not many people like.  The prime suspect is a good friend so Tessa and Gabby need to find the real culprit before he gets put away.  Tessa and Gabby will do whatever they have to do to make sure justice is served.

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning.  I wanted to keep reading so I could find out what was going to happen and what would happen in Tessa’s love life.  The mystery was well plotted and I did not figure it out until it was revealed at the end.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I enjoyed this book so much and I cannot wait to read the next one.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Poisoned Pen Press, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Spilled Milk

Barks and Beans Cafe Cozy Mystery, Book #4

Heather Day Gilbert

5 Stars

Welcome to the Barks & Beans Cafe, a quaint place where folks pet shelter dogs while enjoying a cup of java…and where murder sometimes pays a visit.

The fall flea market has arrived in Macy’s small mountain town, and she’s taking a day off work to check out the local wares. As she and her Great Dane, Coal, wander through the booths, Macy’s more than a little taken aback to discover that her enigmatic tattooed barista, Kylie, is selling antique weapons at the event.

She’s even more shocked when Coal sniffs out a dead body…and the man appears to have been struck down by one of Kylie’s swords.

As rumors begin to circulate, the Barks & Beans Cafe also takes a hit. Customers are reluctant to order their mochas from a murderess. Macy stands by her employee, but even she believes there’s a whole lot more to Kylie’s history than the woman lets on. To make matters worse, Macy’s brother Bo is out of the country, leaving the cafe’s future in her hands.

And then her ex-husband Jake shows up, begging to make amends.

With the past rearing its ugly head, Macy has to ignore Jake’s distractions, appease the angst of her nervous customers, and convince Kylie to trust her, all before an elusive killer strikes again.

Join siblings Macy and Bo Hatfield as they sniff out crimes in their hometown…with plenty of dogs along for the ride! The Barks & Beans Cafe cozy mystery series features a small town, an amateur sleuth, and no swearing or graphic scenes. (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  The Barks and Beans Cafe is doing well and Macy’s life is going pretty well.  She goes to a flea market and sees her barista there selling antique weapons, she did not know she was so knowledgeable about them.  When she and Cole find a dead body with one of the barista’s knives nearby Macy knows she has to find out who really killed him because she knows that her barista did not do it.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through most of the book I could picture things in my mind’s eye  as they were happening.  The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The mystery is well plotted and there were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider.  You need all your detective skills to solve this one.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Dead? No, nothing is what it seems.

The woman is Michaela Fenton, an army veteran turned FBI agent trying to find her twin brother, who might be mixed up with some dangerous people. Most of them would rather die than betray their terrifying leader, who has burrowed his influence deep into the nearby border town, a backwater that has seen better days. The mysterious Dendoncker rules from the shadows, out of sight and under the radar, keeping his dealings in the dark.

He would know the fate of Fenton’s brother.

Reacher is good at finding people who don’t want to be found, so he offers to help, despite feeling that Fenton is keeping secrets of her own. But a life hangs in the balance. The first in a thrilling new series from Emmy Award-winning TV Host and Journalist Tamron Hall, As The Wicked Watch follows a reporter as she unravels the disturbing mystery around the deaths of two Black girls; the work of a serial killer terrorizing Chicago.

When crime reporter Jordan Manning leaves her hometown in Texas to take a job at a television station in Chicago, she’s one step closer to her dream: a coveted anchor chair on a national network.

Jordan is smart and aggressive, with unabashed star-power, and often the only woman of color in the newsroom. Her signature? Arriving first on the scene—in impractical designer stilettos. Armed with a master’s degree in forensic science and impeccable instincts, Jordan has been able to balance her dueling motivations: breaking every big story—and giving a voice to the voiceless.

From her time in Texas, she’s covered the vilest of human behaviors but nothing has prepared her for Chicago. Jordan is that rare breed of a journalist who can navigate a crime scene as well as she can a newsroom—often noticing what others tend to miss. Again and again, she is called to cover the murders of Black women, many of them sexually assaulted, most brutalized, and all of them quickly forgotten.

All until Masey James—the story that Jordan just can’t shake, despite all efforts. A 15-year-old girl whose body was found in an abandoned lot, Masey has come to represent for Jordan all of the frustration and anger that her job often forces her to repress. Putting the rest of her work and her (fraying) personal life aside, Jordan does everything she can to give the story the coverage it desperately requires, and that Black children rarely receive.

Jordan is convinced that there’s a serial killer on the loose and he’s hiding in plain sight. (Amazon)

Colleen Cambridge’s charming and inventive new historical series introduces an unforgettable heroine in Phyllida Bright, fictional housekeeper for none other than famed mystery novelist Agatha Christie. When a dead body is found during a house party at the home of Agatha Christie and her husband Max Mallowan, it’s up to famous author’s head of household, Phyllida Bright, to investigate…

Tucked away among Devon’s rolling green hills, Mallowan Hall combines the best of English tradition with the modern conveniences of 1930. Housekeeper Phyllida Bright, as efficient as she is personable, manages the large household with an iron fist in her very elegant glove. In one respect, however, Mallowan Hall stands far apart from other picturesque country houses . . .

The manor is home to archaeologist Max Mallowan and his famous wife, Agatha Christie. Phyllida is both loyal to and protective of the crime writer, who is as much friend as employer. An aficionado of detective fiction, Phyllida has yet to find a gentleman in real life half as fascinating as Mrs. Agatha’s Belgian hero, Hercule Poirot. But though accustomed to murder and its methods as frequent topics of conversation, Phyllida is unprepared for the sight of a very real, very dead body on the library floor . . .

A former Army nurse, Phyllida reacts with practical common sense—and a great deal of curiosity. It soon becomes clear that the victim arrived at Mallowan Hall under false pretenses during a weekend party. Now, Phyllida not only has a houseful of demanding guests on her hands—along with a distracted, anxious staff—but hordes of reporters camping outside. When another dead body is discovered—this time, one of her housemaids—Phyllida decides to follow in M. Poirot’s footsteps to determine which of the Mallowans’ guests is the killer. With help from the village’s handsome physician, Dr. Bhatt, Mr. Dobble, the butler, along with other household staff, Phyllida  assembles the clues. Yet, she is all too aware that the killer must still be close at hand and poised to strike again. And only Phyllida’s wits will prevent her own story from coming to an abrupt end . . .(Amazon)

Down the Hatch: An Agatha Raisin Mystery (Agatha Raisin Mysteries Book 32) by [M. C. Beaton, R.W. Green]

Beloved New York Times bestseller M. C. Beaton’s cranky, crafty Agatha Raisin—now the star of a hit T.V. show—is back on the case again in Down the Hatch.

Private detective Agatha Raisin, having recently taken up power-walking, is striding along a path in Mircester Park during her lunch break when she hears a cry for help. Rushing over, she finds an elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. Swinburn, in the middle of the green—with the body of an old man lying at their feet.

The man, who the coroner determines died by poisoning, was known as “the Admiral,” a gardener notorious for his heavy drinking, and Chief Inspector Wilkes writes the death off as an accident caused by the consumption of weedkiller stored in a rum bottle. Agatha is not convinced that anyone would mistake weedkiller for rum but carries on with her work at Raisin Investigations, until she receives an anonymous tip that the Admiral’s death was no accident.

Local gossip points to the Swinburns themselves as the killers, spurred by a feud at the club where they, as well as the Admiral, were members. Distraught at this accusation, they turn to Agatha to clear their name, and she takes the case—despite the warnings of Chief Inspector Wilkes.

Agatha encounters one suspicious character after another, becoming further enmeshed in the Admiral’s own dark and shady past. And when she’s run off the road, narrowly escaping with her life, and then another attack occurs, it becomes clear that someone doesn’t want the case closed—and will stop at nothing to prevent Agatha from solving it. Hypnosis Is for Hacks (An Eleanor Wilde Mystery Book 4) by [Tamara Berry]

Eleanor Wilde has traded a career as a sham medium for a (relatively) respectable life in a small English town, providing the locals with herbal remedies and elixirs. But on a trip to the seaside town of Brighton, her past comes calling—and so does a killer . . .

Though Eleanor is delighted that her brother, Liam, is visiting her in England, she must reluctantly agree that her quiet village lacks something when it comes to sightseeing—namely: sights. True, there’s nearby Castle Hartford, belonging to the family of Ellie’s boyfriend, Nicholas. But even Nicholas’s mother is eager to ditch sleepy, sweltering Sussex for a vacation in Brighton, taking Ellie and a relieved Liam with her. Yet hopes of a breezy seaside holiday quickly turn stormy, in every sense . . .

The ominous change in weather is accompanied by the reappearance of Ellie’s former partner-in-crime, Armand Lamont. Back when Ellie earned a living as a phony medium, Armand’s hypnosis skills helped the pair persuade many gullible marks to hand over their savings. Ellie assumes that Armand has resurfaced with blackmail in mind, but before she can figure out his angle, she and Liam witness a man being pushed from a boat by two shadowy figures who then vanish into midair.

Phantoms? Demons? Though Ellie doesn’t believe in either, the recovered body is real enough, as is a string of thefts plaguing their luxury hotel. Ellie has a theory, and it requires inviting Nicholas to join them under a fake identity. Their evolving relationship is as complex as this case, and Ellie’s authentic supernatural abilities too are developing in surprising ways. But as for whether the outcome will be good or bad, not even her witchy powers can say . . . (Amazon)

Review of Southern Fried

Southern Fried
Kenni Lowry Mystery, Book #2
Tonya Kappes
5 Stars

Synopsis:

In the South, it’s better when the food is fried and the secrets kept buried…

After the dead body of a beloved Cottonwood resident is found tangled up in an electric fence, Sheriff Kenni Lowry has a hunch that somethin’ ain’t right. Her investigation heats up with a fierce cook-off competition, a euchre game where the intel is sweeter than the brownies, and a decades old family recipe that may just be the proof in the pudding.

The icing on the cake: Kenni is fighting an attraction to her recently sworn-in deputy sheriff, and election season is hot on her tail. When the killer comes after who she holds most dear, even her poppa’s ghostly guidance might not be enough to keep her and her own out of the frying pan. (Goodreads)

Review:

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book I felt like I was right there watching all the action take place and eavesdropping in on many conversations. I was pulled into the story and the setting right from the first page and taken for a ride through the whole book.

The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional. Kenni is a tough woman who happens to be the sheriff of Cottonwood. Being a female sheriff is not always easy but if anyone can do it, Kenni can. And having the help of her grandfather’s ghost, Poppa, makes things a little easier. She also enjoys having her deputy sheriff, Finn, help, both as a coworker and perhaps as a love interest. All of the characters were down to earth and people that I would like to spend more time with.

The mysteries were carried on well throughout the entire book. There were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through that it was difficult to figure out the killer on my own. I did not figure it out until it was revealed at the end.

This is the second book in the series and the second book that I have read and enjoyed. The characters, especially Poppa, the small town setting and the ease of the writing style make this book, and series, a must read.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley and Henery Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Southern Fried (Kenni Lowry Mystery Book 2) by [Tonya Kappes]

Review of A Brush With Murder

Synopsis:

A quiet lakeside town in western New York state is the new home of Manhattan artist Chloe Abbington and the backdrop for murder in this series debut by Bailee Abbott.

For Chloe Abbington, the transition from fine art painter in New York City to painting-event business owner in charming Whisper Cove is more than a little jarring. But when poison-pen journalist Fiona Gimble writes a viciously negative review of the newly opened Paint Your Shop, Chloe learns that critics are the same everywhere. And when she finds Fiona’s body behind her shop with a painting knife in her neck, Chloe realizes that this picture-perfect town offers anything but peace and quiet.

Suddenly, bustling Artisan Alley is a crime scene, and Chloe is the prime suspect. Her sister and business partner, Izzie, isn’t much help–she’s busy running the shop, and besides, she has secrets of her own. As shrewd Detective Barrett tries to paint her into a corner, Chloe soon finds that Fiona had plenty of enemies. The Whisper Cove Gazette columnist wielded her pen like a sword, slicing and dicing just about every shop owner in the lakeside town.

With the help of her affectionate canine buddy, Max, Chloe sets out to prove that she’s been framed for Fiona’s murder. But she’d better learn the fine art of detection quickly, before the real killer paints the town red again. Otherwise, she may end up trading in her paint smock for an orange jumpsuit…or a green burial plot. (Amazon)

Review:

The characters are well developed and well rounded.   Chloe loves

her family and will do anything to help them.  When her sister, Izzie, opens a painting event business, Chloe plans to help her get it off the ground.  But before the business can really take off, someone is found dead with a painting knife in their neck.  Now they have to find the real murderer, because they are persons of interest.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and it kept me engaged throughout the book.  The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick read.  The mystery is well plotted and you will have to sleuth along with Chloe to figure out the culprit.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I thought this book was good and I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Crooked Lane Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Fixin’ To Die

A Kenni Lowry Mystery, Book #1

Tonya Kappes

5 Stars

29563197

Synopsis:

Kenni Lowry likes to think the zero crime rate in Cottonwood, Kentucky is due to her being sheriff, but she quickly discovers the ghost of her grandfather, the town’s previous sheriff, has been scaring off any would-be criminals since she was elected. When the town’s most beloved doctor is found murdered on the very same day as a jewelry store robbery, and a mysterious symbol ties the crime scenes together, Kenni must satisfy her hankerin’ for justice by nabbing the culprits.

With the help of her Poppa, a lone deputy, and an annoyingly cute, too-big-for-his-britches State Reserve officer, Kenni must solve both cases and prove to the whole town, and herself, that she’s worth her salt before time runs out. (Goodreads)

Review:

This is such a good book and I really enjoyed it.  Cozy ghost paranormals are some of my favorites books to read, and this one is as good as any that I have read.  It has all of the elements that I look for in this type of book:  great characters, small town setting, a lovable ghost and a mystery to solve.  What more could a reader ask for?

The characters are well developed and well rounded.  Kenni is a hard working tough women who is trying to prove to her small town that she is “man enough” to be the sheriff.  She is following in her grandfather’s footsteps, a man she loved deeply and misses terribly.  When there is a murder and a robbery committed on the same, she has her hands full, but is determined to solve both cases.  She gets help from Finn Vincent, an officer on loan from the State Reserve because Kenni is down one deputy due to retirement.  The fact that he is handsome angers her because she finds herself attracted to him.  But she refuses to let that fact distract her from solving the mysteries.  Poppa, Kenni’s grandfather, was my favorite character and I can see why she misses him so much.

The author is very talented in creating the small town setting.  Cottonwood, Kentucky, is full of busy bodies and quirky characters.  Gossip runs wild and everybody wants to offer advice and know each other’s business.  I think it would be a fun place to visit.

There are two mysteries to solve and they were carried on well throughout the book  There are enough suspects, clues and twists and turns to keep the reader guessing.  I was not positive who the culprit was until is was revealed, which is how I like it.

I would recommend this book to any reader who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  If you enjoy ghostly paranormal cozies, this is a must read book.  I am hoping that this book is the start of a new series because I want to spend more time with Kenni and Poppa.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.  I would like to thank NetGalley and Henery Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.
