Buttercream Bump Off

Cupcake Bakery Mystery, Book #2

Jenn McKinlay

5 Stars

Synopsis:

Melanie Cooper and Angie DeLaura’s Fairy Tale Cupcakes bakery is gearing up for Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately someone has iced Baxter Malloy on his first date with Mel’s mother. Now Mom’s a suspect, and Mel and Angie need to find time around frosting to dig into the man’s shady past and discover who served him his just desserts.  (Amazon)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Mel and Angie are like sisters who have gone into business together, owning a bakery shop.  Sometimes they even argue like sisters.  And they are very good at solving mysteries together.  When Mel’s mother’s date is murdered, her mom is a suspect.  They will have to figure out the culprit to save her mom from going to jail.

The writer is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions kept me engaged throughout the entire book.  The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The mystery is well plotted and you will want to collect clues to help you solve it.

I really like this series.  The characters are top-notch, the setting is inviting and the mysteries are intriguing.  I would highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.

Hi. I’m Alice, a thirty-something ex-bodyguard. I live to sleep in, but I rarely get the chance now that I’m living above my small-town’s dinner theater. Forty, foxy, and fond of forensics.
Moving back to my old stopping grounds came with more trouble than I bargained for. I left my investigation agency back in Fort Worth, to start over free from stress.

Two weeks into my retired life, I found myself in a 55+ community—HELLO! Only 43, thank you—and bored out of my mind. I was not cut out for early retirement.

So, I did what any attractive single lady would do—jump as far out of my comfort zone as possible. My mama laughed me out of the kitchen when I told her about my new job as a baker’s assistant, but that was nothing compared to her reaction when I dropped the bomb about the new murder case I was working.

Served up in right in my backyard of all places.

At least it was as far away from the adultery I used to solve. While I had my doubts about taking on the case, the country Sheriff put his full faith in me. Not to mention the deputy that came along with the job—boy was he going to be trouble with a capital T.

Here’s to hoping my keen eye can solve the case before my nerves get the best of me.

Murder in LBJ Cove is the first book in Firedrake Investigations, a midlife P.I. cozy mystery series set in the heart of Texas. Each novel is a clean, snarky mystery, centered around murder, with a sprinkle of romance.

This series is a tie-in to our Hill Country Mysteries series, where you’ll discover Kyrah’s secret: A Fresh Brew (Book 1). (Amazon)

Frances Wynn, the American-born Countess of Harleigh, returns in Dianne Freeman’s charming, lighthearted mystery series set in Victorian England, and finds her wedding day overshadowed by murder . . .

On the eve of her marriage to George Hazelton, Frances has a great deal more on her mind than flowers and seating arrangements. The Connors and the Bainbridges, two families of American robber barons, have taken up residence in London, and their bitter rivalry is spilling over into the highest social circles. At the request of her brother, Alonzo, who is quite taken with Miss Madeline Connor, Frances has invited the Connor family to her wedding. Meanwhile, Frances’s mother has invited Mr. Bainbridge, and Frances fears the wedding may end up being newspaper-worthy for all the wrong reasons.

On the day itself, Frances is relieved to note that Madeline’s father is not among the guests assembled at the church. The reason for his absence, however, turns out to be most unfortunate: Mr. Connor is found murdered in his home. More shocking still, Alonzo is caught at the scene, holding the murder weapon.

Powerful and ruthless, Connor appears to have amassed a wealth of enemies alongside his fortune. Frances and George agree to put their wedding trip on hold to try and clear Alonzo’s name. But there are secrets to sift through, not just in the Bainbridge and Connor families, but also in their own. And with a killer determined to evade discovery at any cost—even if it means taking another life—Frances’s first days as a newlywed will be perilous indeed . . . (Amazon)

The proprietor of a fairy garden and tea shop in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Courtney Kelly has an occasional side gig as a sleuth—with a sprinkling of magical assistance. . . .

Courtney has thrown a few fairy garden parties—for kids. But if a local socialite is willing to dip into her trust fund for an old sorority sister’s fortieth birthday bash, Courtney will be there with bells on. To make the job even more appealing, a famous actress, Farrah Lawson, is flying in for the occasion, and there’s nothing like a celebrity cameo to raise a business’s profile.

Now Courtney has less than two weeks to paint a mural, hang up tinkling windchimes, plan party games, and conjure up all the details. While she works her magic, the hostess and her girlfriends head off for an indulgent spa day—which leads to a fateful facial for Farrah, followed by her mysterious death. Could the kindhearted eyebrow waxer who Farrah berated in public really be the killer, as the police suspect? Courtney thinks otherwise, and with the help of her imaginative sleuth fairy, sets out to dig up the truth behind this puzzling murder . . .

Review:

Another festival, another murder for Mae and her friends to try to solve.  When to winner of Miss Daniel Boone Days is murdered, Mae will have to figure who the culprit is.  Some funny things happened at the festival, including Dottie being at the dunk tank.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and this helped pull me into the story from the very beginning.  You can tell the author knows about southern living and it shines through when you are reading her books.

The mystery was well plotted and there were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider.  I had a pretty good idea of who the killer was but not the why.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well plotted cozy mystery.  If you are looking for a book with great characters. a southern setting and lots of laughs, pick this book up and enjoy.

~Lisa K’s Book Review

When Sarah Blair’s mother participates in a reality show competition for brides in Wheaton, Alabama, things get a little too real as a murderer crashes the wedding party . . .

Sometimes Sarah’s mother, Maybelle, can be higher maintenance than her Siamese cat RahRah. Maybelle and her friend, Mr. George Rogers, have been chosen to be one of five couples competing for a small-town “perfect” wedding and dream honeymoon on a Southern Belles reality show—and guess who has to be chaperone. Even more vexing, the producers have decided to put up the crew and participants at the restaurant/bed and breakfast owned by Sarah’s nemesis Jane Clark.

But when someone turns up dead with Jane kneeling by the body with blood on her hands, she goes from being Sarah’s chief rival to the police’s chief suspect. Neither Sarah nor her twin, Chef Emily Johnson, can stand Jane—still, they don’t think she’s a murderer. The producers vow the show must go on, but to protect their mother and the other contestants, Sarah vows to find the true killer before someone else gets eliminated . . .

5 Stars

Just minutes ago, Winona Higer was crowning the event’s Queen—could the competition have really been that deadly?

But she’s soon recruited to sub for the late Winona and serve as parade float judge, among other duties. As she hears rumors and gossip, and learns of mean pranks and threatening notes, her instincts kick in—despite her boyfriend the cop’s disapproval. Now, between managing a new hire and keeping the tourists filled with fudge, she’s dealing with a case that’s boiling over . . .   (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  It was good to get to spend time with Allie, Jenn, Rex and Mal, Allie’s puppy.  Again Allie stumbles across a dead body, the woman in charge of the festival that the citizens of Mackinac Island are enjoying.  When a second person is murdered Allie feels she has to solve the murders.  Her and Mal are on the case.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions kept me engaged throughout the entire book.   The writing style flows smoothly and it helped to define the characters very clearly by their actions and words.  The mystery was well plotted and it was very hard to solve.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  Check out Allie, Mal and the fudge making.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate. (Goodreads)
