Paradise Can Be Murder

Paradise Can Be Murder

A Kay Driscoll Mystery, Book #4

Susan Bernhardt

5 Stars

Kay, Phil, and friends are looking forward to taking their first vacation together on a Caribbean cruise. With their innate curiosity, Kay and company find themselves in the heart of the investigation. Will they find justice for the victim, amidst secrets and deceit, before the cruise comes to an end and the murderer leaves the ship? Time is ticking away.

Meanwhile, a racially charged hate crime back home shakes the community of Sudbury Falls. (Goodreads)

Sometime when you read a book, something clicks and you really connect with it.  I don’t know if is the author’s writing style, the characters, or the setting that the author creates (I think it is probably all of the above), but you really relate to the book.  That is what happened when I read this book (actually when I read all of this author’s books).

The characters are well rounded, well developed and three dimensional.  Kay, Deidre and Elizabeth make quite a threesome.  They all have such different personalities, outlooks on life and beliefs, but they truly care for each other and have each other’s backs.  Janey is back and as outrageous as ever, which keeps everyone on their toes.  But she is also sweet and loves Kay and Phil.  And speaking of Phil, he has couple of surprises for Kay on their cruise.

The writing style flows smoothly defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I felt like I was right there on the cruise with the gang (except  I did not have seasickness, thankfully).  Do not read this book when you are hungry because the author’s description of all the food and drinks will have you craving food.  The mystery was well plotted and moved along at a nice pace.  There were plenty of clues to sift through and enough red herrings thrown in to challenge the most experienced armchair detective.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  Take yourself on a mini vacation and join the cruise, you will have a great time.

But her bodyguard will make their lives very difficult…

A private investigator is kidnapped with the teen heiress he was hired to protect in this thrilling sixth installment of the Sin City Investigation Series.

Working security for a wealthy Indian businessman sounds like easy money to PI Jim Bean. He’s charged with watching the man’s teenage daughter, the stubborn and spirited Zevah Ralen. His task is simple: keep the girl out of trouble during her father’s business trip to Las Vegas.

But trouble strikes as soon as the assignment starts, when a group of kidnappers ambush Zevah outside the mall. Jim barely has time to handcuff himself to her before they’re both knocked out and transported to the kidnappers’ remote cottage hideout.

With no weapons, no backup plan, and nobody coming to save them, Jim knows he can only rely on himself—especially when he learns Zevah’s father has no intention of paying the ransom, afraid the money would encourage the kidnappers to go after his other children.

Now, Jim must escape the cottage, find his way out of the wilderness, and rescue the girl he promised to protect…but as usual with Jim Bean, that is actually just the beginning of the danger and surprises that await him.

In June 1900, reporter Emma Cross discovers the body of a woman in the waters below the Morgans’ mansion, which threatens to send members of Newport’s high society floundering . . .

As a reporter, Emma is used to covering Newport’s social events. But this time she is appearing on the arm of her fiancé, Derrick Andrews, at a small but exclusive gathering of the New York Yacht Club at Beacon Rock, the Grecian-inspired summer “cottage” of Edwin and Elizabeth Morgan. The members—which include cousin and Yacht Club Commodore John Pierpoint Morgan and widow Lucy Carnegie, the first woman to be admitted to the Club—are there to discuss their strategy for the next America’s Cup Challenge, to be held in New York Harbor the following summer.
But it’s Emma who must come up with a strategy when she discovers a woman’s body bobbing against one of the hulls of the boats moored at the base of Beacon Rock. Is it possible she fell from the Newport ferry and was carried by the tide? Or could she have drowned herself or fallen victim to foul play?
After the woman is identified as the missing daughter of a yacht designer, the police—with the exception of Emma’s friend Detective Jesse Whyte—hastily conclude she is a suicide, perhaps to quiet any scandal for the Morgans, since her body was found floating near their property. But Emma suspects the woman was murdered and begins to sort through a who’s who of sportsmen, boat crews, and the Newport elite in search of a stone-cold killer . . . (Amazon)

Could mysterious deaths be diabolical murders? Aggie and Jack are determined to find out.

The Mojo Dojo has opened in Gnarly Peak. But rather than getting their groove on while learning martial arts and meditation skills, its clients seem to be dying at an alarming rate.

Could it be coincidence when bodies start dropping in rather mysterious circumstances? Aggie Sloan, a former K-9 officer, and her slobbering, flatulent, burping, one-eyed Pit Bull, Jack, aren’t convinced, no matter what the local police and Colorado State Patrol have to say about it.

Which brings Aggie and Jack in direct conflict with Gnarly Peak Police Chief, Andrew Kelly (also known as Aggie’s grandfather, Grampy), and Homicide Detective Reid Tremaine (a.k.a. Detective Hottie or Detective Pain-In-The-Buns, depending on the situation) from Colorado State Patrol. Both police agencies are satisfied the deaths result from natural causes and the medical examiner agrees.

Unconvinced, Aggie signs up at the dojo to investigate, but not even Tai Chi can calm her nerves with Jack on his own mission of discovering the dead and nearly dead.

Aggie and Jack will stop at nothing as they go up against friends, family, law enforcement, and even city hall to catch a killer.

If you’re looking for a new cozy mystery series with a beautiful setting, give Whit and Whiskers a try.
~Christy’s Cozy Corners

The mystery is contained in this book, but it’s so much more fun to read book #1 and get to know the characters better. A fun, suspenseful page turner. Yes, there is a cat involved too! I hope a third book will be coming out soon!
~Socrates’ Book Reviews

Take in the wild beauty of Santa Catalina Island with tour guide and eclectic gift shop owner Whitney Dagner. On the itinerary: dramatic Pacific coastlines, diverse marine life, and murder!

Since returning home from mainland California and finding her groove with the family tourism business, Whitney Dagner’s daily routine has become a wonderfully chaotic adventure. She and her nimble kitty, Whiskers, often find themselves at the center of the action on Catalina, from staged treasure hunts to gossipy birdwatchers. But before Whit can get too comfortable in the place where she grew up, a gift shop order leads to a stunning discovery—someone’s dead body . . .

One of Whit’s best boat tour client’s, Leo Franklin was young and newly engaged when he unceremoniously took his own life. Only it doesn’t seem like that’s what really happened—not after the suspicious activity displayed by his family’s old rivals at the scene of his death. As a bitter, generations-long feud between Leo’s kin and the local Ahern clan comes to a head, Whit and her police diver not-so-ex-boyfriend must lead a dangerous investigation into years of scandal and bad blood to figure out who’s innocent . . . and who’s covering a killer’s tracks.

After writing plays for her friends to act out as a kid, bad poetry in high school, and her high school Alma Mater song, GABBY ALLAN finally found her true passion—cozy mysteries. Being able to share her world with readers, one laugh at a time, and touch people’s hearts with her down-to-earth characters makes for the best job ever. This California girl now lives with her husband, daughter, and two insane dogs in Central Pennsylvania where she is hard at work on her next novel.

I’m so excited to be a stop on the blog tour for author Nicole Asselin and her new book Concession Stand Crimes. It is the second book in her The Ballpark Mysteries. it was a good book.

MADELINE BOUCHER is still reeling from her first few weeks of working for her family’s Independent League Baseball Team, the Abington Armadillos. She found a dead body and survived a kidnapping before finally clearing her brother of a murder. She didn’t think anything could be as dramatic as that, but she was wrong.

Her parents have given her more responsibility in running ballpark events in the hopes that they could retire and leave the team in her hands. Her brother is moving on to the big leagues, so this is her time to shine. Her first task? Deal with a concession stand kerfuffle. Redmond Brewery heiress, Alaska Redmond, storms her way into the ballpark making demands.

The next day, the son of the concession’s manager finds Redmond’s body in one of the beer stands along the ballpark concourse. Again, Madeline finds herself immersed in an investigation. While the suspects start piling up, including a promising young player on the team, Madeline knows she must get involved. With the help of Davis, her new love interest and head of the security department, she delves deeper into the death of the heiress.

Trying to run team events, solve a murder, and have a normal life take their toll as Madeline comes to depend on those in her baseball-loving community, including Bronia, her old family friend who runs a garden center and helps her make sense of things. She even chances a psychic for advice while at a Salem Warlock’s away game. Will anyone help her untangle the mess of suspects including the victim’s family?

Can she clear the name of the Abington Armadillos and start focusing on the season?

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Madeline has been given more responsibilities with the minor league team, the Abington Armadillos.  But before she has a chance to do very much, another body  is found.  Now she has to be involved with finding the  murderer along with all of her other duties.  With the help of her family and friends she will have to figure out the culprit.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The author is talented in her descriptive writing and that helped pull me into the story from the very beginning.  The mystery was well plotted and I was not sure who the killer was until it was revealed at the end.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I really enjoyed this book because it involved something that I love–baseball.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

Nicole Asselin spent her formative high school years in the middle of Pennsylvania but always identified with her New England roots. Nicole’s family is originally from Connecticut, and her Grandpa Asselin introduced her to the Red Sox nation where she has been a member for her whole life and her Grandma Asselin introduced her to the world of mystery novels. Now those two loves are combined into her new Ballpark Mystery series.

Nicole graduated from Curry College in Milton Mass with a degree in English/Creative Writing, minoring in Dance in 2004. She also attended George Mason University and received a Master’s in Arts Management. She worked in the Government sector for over ten years before transitioning to Healthcare. Now working just outside of Boston as a Technical Writer, she lives on the South Shore of Massachusetts with her three cats Julia, Jacques, and Madeline (no relation to the main character of her book).

Dial M For Mousse

Dial M For Mousse
Emergency Dessert Squad Mystery, Book #3
Laura Bradford
5 Stars

Murder takes the cake in an irresistible Emergency Dessert Squad mystery from the national bestselling author of The Silence of the Flans.
The Emergency Dessert Squad business is booming, with owner and baker Winnie Johnson working overtime to satisfy the emergency cravings of Silver Lake, Ohio. Her latest order, a plate of motivational desserts for an artists’ retreat, is just what she needs to keep her mind off her own relationship woes.
But Winnie’s problems seem like trifles when she discovers the body of retreat owner Sally Dearfield mere inches away from five oh-so-eccentric and viable suspects. Now, this baking detective must uncover the inspiration behind Sally’s murder before another creative genius is iced.

The characters are well developed and well rounded. Winnie is a hard worker who loves her job, running the Emergency Dessert Squad. She loves to create desserts for people who are in need of a pick-me up, a celebration or just because. She also loves her naming sessions with her best friend Renee and all of her elderly neighbors and friends. Some of the dessert names that they come up with are so clever and funny.

The author is very talented in her character development and in her descriptive writing. Through much of the book I felt like I was right there, watching all of the action taking place and listening in on conversations. The writing style flows smoothly, the pace moves along at a great speed and the book is an easy read.

The mystery was well plotted and kept me guessing until the end. With enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through, it was a mystery not easily solved.

I would recommend this book and series to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy. The premise of the book is unique, the characters are lovable and the mystery is first rate. What’s not to like?

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Mixed media and mixed messages…

When I take time off from my day job to help my friend Margaret with a mosaic at her steampunk-themed tearoom, I never expect to get embroiled in another murder investigation.

Make that two murder investigations. As my bestie PJ would say, “Are you kidding me?”

Worse, the investigations are hitting a little close to home: PJ’s beloved cousin Del has, um, less-than-cordial relationships with both victims and is emerging as the prime suspect.

Although I have no trouble envisioning how to marry photographs, ribbons, and paints into a harmonious whole, I can’t wrap my head around these conflicting facts and feelings. Could my instincts be so wrong? Could PJ’s bearded cinnamon roll of a cousin really be a cold-blooded killer? The evidence says yes, but my intuition says no.

Why isn’t distinguishing truth from lies as easy as separating buttons from beads? If I mention my suspicions to PJ, it could destroy our friendship. But if Del is guilty, PJ could be the next victim.

Uh uh. Nope. Over my dead body.

Although, at the rate things are going? Maybe that’s a poor choice of words…

Mixed Media is the second in the Crafty Sleuth humorous cozy mysteries, featuring edge-of-forty, plus-sized African American mechanical engineer Tash Van Buren—aka the Craft Whisperer—and her best friend, PJ Purdy. Count on creative crafts, fabulous fashion, and brisk banter—embellished with a pinch of mild profanity and peril. (Amazon)
