Review:

The characters were well rounded and well developed.  I liked all of the characters that I met and am looking forward to spending more time with them in future books.  I really enjoyed the fact that the characters were a mixture of ages: some were senior citizens and some were millennials.  It was kind of heartwarming to see the younger people caring for and being concerned with the welfare of the older ones.

The author did a great job in creating the setting: an assisted living retail community of the Kinsey Falls.  I was really intrigued by this concept and thought it was a great idea. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through most of the book I felt like I was right there, walking in the knitting shop and seeing all the beautiful colors and textures.  It pulled me into the story right from the beginning.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted women’s fiction. This was a feel good story and I am looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Grace Abraham Publishing, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Probable Claws: A Mrs. Murphy Mystery by [Brown, Rita Mae]Rita Mae Brown and her feline co-author Sneaky Pie Brown return to Albemarle County, Virgina, as tangled mysteries past and present converge in the bestselling Mrs. Murphy series.

“As feline collaborators go, you couldn’t ask for better than Sneaky Pie Brown.”—The New York Times Book Review

With the New Year just around the corner, winter has transformed the cozy Blue Ridge Mountain community of Crozet, Virginia, into a living snow globe. It’s the perfect setting for Mary Minor “Harry” Haristeen to build a new work shed designed by her dear friend, local architect Gary Gardner. But the natural serenity is shattered when out of the blue, right in front of Harry and Deputy Cynthia Cooper, and in broad daylight, Gary is shot to death by a masked motorcyclist.

Outraged by the brazen murder, Harry begins to burrow into her friend’s past—and unearths a pattern of destructive greed reaching far back into Virginia’s post-Revolutionary history. When Harry finds incriminating evidence, the killer strikes again.

Heedless of her own safety, Harry follows a trail of clues to a construction site in Richmond, where the discovery of mysterious remains has recently halted work. Aided as always by her loyal, if opinionated, companions, crime-solving cats Mrs. Murphy and Pewter, and Tee Tucker the Corgi, Harry hunts for a link between the decades-old dead, the recently violently deceased—and ancient secrets that underlie everything. And while other deaths are narrowly averted in a flurry of fur, the killer remains at large—ever more desperate and dangerous. The deep-rooted legacy of corruption that’s been exposed can never be buried again. But if Harry keeps pursuing the terrible truth, she may be digging her own grave.  (Amazon)

Finding Answers (A Rescue Alaska Mystery Book 2) by [Daley, Kathi]He watched the boy skipping rocks across the clear, still, water. From the cover of dense forest he listened to the childish squeals of delight as the flat hard surface of the stone met the firm unyielding force of the lake. Each hop resulted in an ever widening web of rings, each ring, larger, yet less intense than that which came before. Life, he mused, was like those rings. The further you traveled from the point of origin, the wider your reach, but the less intense the effect. He’d spent a lifetime struggling to make his mark in the larger rings, but now, he’d decided, was time to avenge the iniquities of his past, and claim the inner ring as his own.

Rescue Alaska is the eighth series by USA Today Bestselling Author Kathi Daley. It is a fast moving mystery series with a paranormal twist.

Rescue Alaska is a small town in northern Alaska where visitors come to hike and ski. Harmony Carson is a lifelong resident who volunteers as a member of the local search and rescue team. Harmony has a unique gift which she often considers a curse. She is able to ‘see’ the individuals she is meant to help rescue, and more often than not she can feel their fear and their pain as well. When she isn’t aiding in a rescue, Harmony works at Neverland – the bar owned by her brother in law Jake, and volunteers at the local animal shelter. Harmony lives in a rustic cabin with six dogs, four cats, six kittens, eight rabbits, and a blind mule named Homer.

In the second book in the series, Jake and Harmony are in the process of training a new search and rescue dog when they get a call that a four year old boy has gone missing from the cabin his family rented while on vacation. They join the search and rescue team, along with the local police, in the hope of finding the child before it is too late. Along the way they discover the freshly dumped body of an important member of the community. The police are stumped as to why this popular town resident would have been murdered, until a second community member goes missing and a disturbing pattern begins to emerge.  (Amazon)

Review of The Fur-tive Wedding Fiend

The Fur-tive Wedding Fiend

Beatrice Young Cozy Cat Mystery, Book #14

Alannah Rogers

5 Stars

The Fur-tive Wedding Fiend (Beatrice Young Cozy Cat Mystery Book 14) by [Rogers, Alannah]Synopsis:

It’s supposed to be the happiest time in 64-year-old Beatrice Young’s life—she’s finally planning a wedding to marry the man of her dreams. But when a shocking surprise shows up at her bridal shower, she knows a heinous villain is determined to ruin everything.

As the amateur sleuth scrambles to send out invitations, choose the perfect dress, and design the menu, her enemy is one step behind, spoiling every single moment in the most fiendish ways possible. Thankfully, Beatrice’s best friend the sheriff is hot on the case as well as maid of honor-zilla Zoe, who won’t let ANYTHING stand in the way of the bride’s happiness.

In the end, the stalker’s fatal weakness might be the perfect opportunity for Beatrice’s four crime-fighting cats to save the day and turn a nuptial nightmare into wedding bliss.

This is the fourteenth book in the Beatrice Young cozy cat mystery series. It can be read as a standalone but is extra delightful when enjoyed in sequence. This novella is a clean mystery with no graphic violence, sex, or swearing.  (Amazon)

Review:

The characters are well developed and well rounded.  I liked the fact that Beatrice was an older protagonist, more mature and sensible. That did not prevent her from getting involved in trouble but she handled that trouble more level-headed.  I enjoyed getting to spend time with her and her friends. And you have to love her cats and their crime solving activities.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and drew me into the story right from the beginning. The mystery is well plotted and not easily solved, which is fine with me.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  And if you are a cat lover, then you really should check it out.

Review of Beaches, Bungalows and Burglaries

Beaches, Bungalows, and Burglaries

A Camper and Criminals Cozy Mystery, Book #1

Tonya Kappes

5 Stars

39827834Synopsis:

Welcome to Normal, Kentucky~ where nothing is normal. A Campers and Criminal Mystery Series is another brainchild of USA Today Bestselling Author Tonya Kappes. If you love her quirky southern characters and small town charm with a mystery to solve, you’re going to love her new cozy mystery series!

Mae West, a far cry from the Hollywood actress, has been thrown for a loop. Her plush lifestyle in the big city of New York comes to a screeching halt after the FBI raids her mansion and arrests her husband, Paul West, for a Ponzi scheme that rips people out of millions of dollars.

Mae finds herself homeless, friendless, and penniless. All hope isn’t lost. . .the only thing Mae got to keep that the government didn’t seize is a tourist camp ground, Happy Trails, in Normal, Kentucky and an RV to live in. One problem, Mae’s idea of camping has room service.

By the look of the brochure, Happy Trails has plush Kentucky Bluegrass, a crystal clear lake, a beach chair with her name on it and thoughts of how much money it could bring her after she sells it. Mae figures she’ll take a couple weeks vacation with her toes dipped in the lake. Things aren’t always as they appear. The Kentucky Bluegrass is nothing but dirt and the crystal clue lake is murky with green slime on top.

Mae quickly find out that Happy Trails and the citizens of Normal were also victims of Paul’s schemes, making her lower than tha lake scum in the residents’ eyes. Mae doesn’t think things could get much worse, but as luck would have it, Paul West has escaped from prison and is found dead, murdered, floating in the Happy Trails mucky green lake.

Mae is the number one suspect on Detective Hank Sharp’s short list. After all, Mae has the perfect motive as a kept wife who has been scorned to ashes, embarrassed to death, and seeking revenge.

Time is running out for Mae to prove that she’s innocent and nothing like her husband. If only she could get someone to believe her and talk Detective Sharp into looking at other residents who’ve lost all their savings to Paul’s Ponzie scheme before the curtain is closed on this Hollywood namesake. (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded, well developed and three dimensional.  Although Mae led a pampered life before her husband’s crimes came to light, she is made of strong stuff.  She may be down but she is not out. She is willing to do whatever it takes to make things right with the people that her husband scammed.  I really enjoyed getting to know the Laundry Club girls, especially Queenie. They were all quirky characters and were very funny. And there is even a potential romantic interest for Mae.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and while I was reading I could picture in my mind the campground in all of it’s disrepair.  Her descriptions and characters pulled me in right from the beginning and took me on a great ride.

The mystery was well plotted and moved along at a steady pace.  There were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through and I was surprised at who the culprit was. I like when that happens.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  In fact, all of the series that I have read by this author I have greatly enjoyed.  I am looking forward to reading the next book when it is published.

No adult scenes, but a bit of language, although not much. The most objectionable may be “feck,” which my main character uses.
(Although my Irish friends tell me this isn’t really cursing!) I’d say it’s PG 13.

It can be read as a standalone.

about-the-book

Former pharmaceutical researcher Maggie O’Malley is losing sleep. Her boyfriend Constantine’s aunt is a multitasking sleepwalker who, in addition to wandering her stately home, prepares meals, folds laundry and, one winter night, stumbles across her husband with his throat slit.

It’s a rude and gruesome awakening that’s upsetting to Aunt Polly. And interesting to the police.

Maggie and Constantine work to uncover who killed the cosmetic surgery mogul and why. As they dig into the lives of those who knew him best, they discover that the truth is only skin deep and doctoring perception is a treatment with deadly side effects.

A gripping page-turner with more twists than a surgeon’s suture, 39 Winks is a tale of lies, betrayals and greed that will keep you up at night. And looking over your shoulder.

In short, my kind of read! 39 Winks is another prime example of Valenti’s skill in weaving together complex threads into an entertaining and fully engaging story.
~Reading is My SuperPower

Twists and turns kept me guessing and I was surprised by the amazing ending. This book would make a wonderful television movie.

When did you know that you wanted to be an author?  What things, if any, influenced that decision?

I wanted to be an author as soon as I learned how to read. My goal was to replicate the experiences I had as a reader. It wasn’t until I began to write for a living that I had the courage to pursue that dream. I felt that I could use the writer’s tools I had accumulated over the years to write the kind of books that I love to read: those that are entertaining, engaging and keep me turning the page.

With so many cozies being written today, what makes your books stand out from the crowd?

My books actually aren’t cozies. They are traditional mysteries with thriller elements. Because the Maggie O’Malley Mysteries deal with the world of pharmaceuticals and feature unique premises, witty characters and page-turning plots, they tend to stand out. In fact, my debut mystery, Protocol, was nominated for both an Agatha and Lefty for best first novel.

Do you work from an outline or plot or do you just see where the characters take you?

I’m a dyed-in-the-wool plotter. I need to map everything in out in order to clearly see where I’m headed. However, I’m always open to my characters’ free will and am willing to follow where they lead me, even if it’s down a rabbit hole.

Do you read your reviews?  Do you respond to them, good or bad?  Do you do anything special to get those reviews?

I occasionally read reviews, but rarely respond to them. I believe that after my book has been released, it belongs to the readers. I go on a few blog tours, but mostly let reviews accumulate organically.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I would tell my younger self to be more fearless, to see “what if” as an invitation rather than a warning.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in someone buying your book(s)?   Who designs your book covers?

I think book covers are immensely important. People do judge books by their covers, and it makes good sense. Covers offer a glimpse of what lies beneath. My wonderful publisher, Henery Press, designs my covers, and I love them!

Please give us an insight into your main characters.  What do you think makes them special?

Maggie O’Malley is perfectly imperfect. Although smart and driven, she’s shy, awkward and doesn’t know her own strength until she’s forced to test it. I think this not only makes her real, but also relatable. I think many of us have a little Maggie inside of us.

What have you learned about yourselves since becoming an author?

I’ve learned that I can multitask in a way I never imagined. I’ve become quite the juggler, promoting my first book, finalizing my second, writing my third, all while working and caring for my family. It’s an incredible challenge for which I’m very grateful.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

I write full-time, but only part-time as a novelist. 🙂 When I’m not writing mysteries, I work as an advertising copywriter. I guess you could say that when I’m not writing, I’m writing!

What do your plans for future projects include?

I’m currently working on the next Maggie O’Malley Mystery, and I love where it’s going. I can’t wait to share it with the world!

What do you think the hardest part of writing is?  What is the easiest?

I think the most difficult part of writing is navigating through the middle of the book. I have a clear idea of where I’ve come from and where I’m going, but it can be a challenge to keep the momentum up between the big moments that bookend a novel. On the other hand, character development and dialogue come easily for me.

What type of books do you like to read?  Who are some of your favorite authors?

I love mysteries and thrillers of all kinds. Some of my favorite authors include Harlan Coben, Lisa Gardner, Karin Slaughter and Tana French.

What is the one thing you would like your readers to know about you?

I would like to tell readers, “I write for you.” I’m a huge reader and have the utmost respect for my audience!

Do you have anything specific you would like to say to your readers?

If you’ve read my books, thank you so much! There are so many wonderful authors out there, and your support means the world to me.

The story is lighthearted with just the right touch of humor. There is friendship, family, intrigue, love, fire, monsters, mystery and magic . . . Full Moons, Dunes, and Macaroons will have you riveted to see how the group’s latest adventure will play out.
~The Avid Reader

The plotline was wonderful. It was complex, well thought out, and there were plenty of red herrings as far as whodunit.
~Valerie’s Musings

I really loved this story, it was time to see some closure in Imogen’s love life and discovering a little bit more about her brother, be prepared for a few twists!

The big day has finally arrived, and Imogen, Iggy and the bakers head to the Fire Kingdom for Hank and Shaday’s wedding. Imogen is totally fine with it—or so she keeps telling herself.

Even the murder of a famous wedding guest can’t stop the impending nuptials. So when Imogen’s repressed feelings magically ruin her baking and she’s banned from the kitchen, she sets herself to finding the killer.

Her search leads her through the desert kingdom’s bustling marketplaces and the maze-like raid, to discover underground movements, shady characters, and more secrets about the people around her than she thought possible. Could the killer be the clever journalist or the rebellious palace maid? Perhaps it’s a member of the royal family.

With the Fire Kingdom’s people churning for change, a mysterious artifact missing from the museum, and a dastardly plot brewing, Imogen begins to feel the heat. When Horace contacts her and makes her a tempting offer, she struggles to choose between him and her new friends.

Imogen’s choice will have enormous consequences over a deadly plot that threatens the people she loves. Will she stop a killer and find a happy ending in the process? Or will an ancient legend come to life and destroy them all?

When did you know that you wanted to be an author?  What things, if any, influenced that decision?

When I was four I had this Dr. Seuss book, “My Book About Me,” where you answered a ton of questions about yourself. And in it I wrote that I wanted to be an author (author was spelled incorrectly). So pretty much since I can remember it’s what I’ve wanted to do. So I’m very excited to finally be doing it!

My Book About Me

With so many cozies being written today, what makes your books stand out from the crowd?

Seashells, Spells & Caramels has a strong fantasy element, with a magical world I’ve spent a lot of time imagining, so I hope the reader’s really able to get lost in it, and just enjoy the adventure. Besides the murder mystery plot, there’s also an important overarching storyline that develops each book and holds a lot of surprises. And I think both the plots and the characters aren’t the ones you typically see. For example, Francis isn’t your typical vampire, and I think a lot of unexpected events happen.

Do you work from an outline or plot or do you just see where the characters take you?

I definitely do a detailed plot. I think this is one of the things that’s helped me finish books. I have several drafts of other stories I’d written previously, but without having outlined them first, they kind of petered out, or I would get stuck and give up. For me, plotting has been really helpful for seeing my books through to the end. But every single book, the characters do surprise me and things change.

Do you read your reviews?  Do you respond to them, good or bad?  Do you do anything special to get those reviews?

I read some of them, but honestly not all of them. I don’t respond because I don’t want anyone to feel like I’m hovering, but if anyone emails me or contacts me via social media, then I definitely thank them.  I’m always happy to hear from readers. I’ve been really fortunate to get a lot of great feedback and support.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I’d tell my younger self that though I had some natural talent, the key to really succeeding at my dream was just persistence. Trying different things, working on skills, reading and just practicing by actually writing. I would also tell myself not to stress so much.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in someone buying your book(s)?   Who designs your book covers?

Definitely! It gives the reader an idea of the genre and what to expect. I actually design the covers for this series myself, and it’s been really fun. I’m not sure if I’ll continue to for my next series though.

Please give us an insight into your main characters.  What do you think makes them special?

I think Imogen’s great because she’s funny and gets funnier when stressed or scared. She’s also generally really positive and adapts to her magical surroundings quickly.

What have you learned about yourselves since becoming an author?

I think the biggest thing is just the confidence I’ve gained. I think publishing my first book was a real hang-up for me for a long time. I’d put a lot of pressure and expectation on it, and after I got it done it was like this weight lifted. And I realized how much I enjoy the whole writing process, even the business side of things. I don’t think there’s anything else in the world I’d be willing to spend so much time and effort on, and still keep coming back for more.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

I still have a part-time job teaching Pilates.

What do your plans for future projects include?

I’ll write another book (maybe 2) in this series and then start another. It’ll be another cozy witch mystery and I have a couple of ideas floating around. I definitely want to do one that’s a little spookier.

What do you think the hardest part of writing is?  What is the easiest?

Honestly, I think motivating and being accountable to myself. I need to get better at staying on top of not only writing tasks, but those related to running a business. While I wouldn’t say any of it’s easy, I really enjoy putting the finishing touches on the book and hitting “publish”.

What type of books do you like to read?  Who are some of your favorite authors?

I love anything fantasy. Sarah J. Maas is one of my favorites who’s writing right now.

What is the one thing you would like your readers to know about you?

Just that I’m so honored and grateful to anyone who reads my books and always love to hear from them!

Do you have anything specific you would like to say to your readers?

Just, thank you! This really has been a lifelong dream. To be writing books that people read and enjoy, still kind of blows my mind. ☺
