Action-adventure from USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Amy Vansant – a novel packed with thrills, fun, romance and heartfelt family intrigue.

Life was supposed to start feeling like a permanent vacation.

After years on the run from a vengeful killer, Shee McQueen is home at her father’s beach hotel. The Loggerhead Inn doubles as a retreat for sunburned tourists and a haven for recovering ex-military — men and women who help right wrongs for people in need of their particular skills.

Unless…

…or her first job for her father has ended in a double homicide…

…or that her very presence is driving the hotel’s regulars to prove their worth by starting dangerous covert missions of their own…

Wait. It couldn’t be a botched kidnapping is started looking more like the work of a deranged serial killer?

Hm.

Maybe hold the tanning lotion.

This might take a minute.

The Girl Who Was Forgotten is the second explosive mystery-thriller in the Shee McQueen series, but can be read as a standalone. While the book has all the pulse-pounding action of a thriller, language, romance and violence is rated PG.

Turning forty isn’t as exciting as most people think. There are no fireworks or surprise parties, and I definitely didn’t get hitched overnight. Been there, got the divorce papers to prove it. Nope, none of that.

Instead, I somehow opened a portal into the 90’s and chased my cat through it.

And that set off a whirlwind.

The one thing my birth mom tried to save me from has caught up with me. I’m the next time-traveling witch assassin.

Don’t get excited. The job comes with a lot of learning curves, mishaps, and having to actually assassinate people.

Oh, but don’t worry, the people I have to hunt down deserve their karma.

And at least I have a pixie guide through all this, a little dragon named Fred.

The French Folly: Cozy Mystery (Justine French Mysteries Book 2) by [Myrtle Morse, Ruby Loren]

Some things are too good to be true.

Like winning a house in a raffle and expecting it to be free of any skeletons in the closet.

Or in this case… beneath the floorboards.

When Justine French takes a tumble in her new house, she discovers that the original property owners are still in residence. Bones and a few shreds of clothing are all that remains of the couple who went missing thirty years ago. The police are happy to finally be able to close the missing persons case, but they aren’t as keen to solve the mystery of how and why the previous owners ended up beneath the floorboards.

Justine has a few ideas about that.

For starters, there’s her next-door neighbour who’s been blasting music in an effort to get her to move straight back out again. As an expert in psychology, Justine knows that anti-social behaviour can escalate quickly. For once, there’s a good reason to be curtain twitching to keep an eye on her neighbours.

After all, you never know when the music might morph into murder.

And Justine has no desire to become the next bones beneath her floor.

A funny and uplifting cozy mystery series set in rural France. If you love quirky British sleuths, laugh out loud drama, and clever crimes, you will love the Justine French Mysteries. Start reading today! (Amazon)

But then another corpse is discovered, buried in the nearby sand, and it becomes clear that the killing spree concerns more than just the young lady’s personal money trouble. With the authorities distracted by lurid details, it’s up to Rachel and her furry friend to uncover the subtleties containing the solution to the puzzle.

A prototypical early “cat mystery,” written before the subgenre became a staple of cozy mystery fiction, The Cat Saw Murder is an entertaining and endlessly surprising whodunit with a focus on felines. Reissued for the first time in over half a decade, the book, written pseudonymously by the author better known for her hardboiled and suspense novels, is the first in the long-running Rachel Murdock series.

The Asylum Aberration (A Charlie Rhodes Cozy Mystery Book 9) by [Amanda M. Lee]

Charlie Rhodes has spent her entire life wondering who she is, why she was abandoned as a child, and what’s behind the magical powers she can wield in the blink of an eye.
She’s finally getting her answers.
Now that she’s been reunited with her birth mother and brother, the search is on for her father. He’s supposed to be somewhere in Boston … but where? He’s fallen out of touch and finding him is virtually impossible.
Thankfully for Charlie, the Legacy Foundation’s next assignment is in a suburb of the very city where she lives, which means there’s plenty of time to find her father and solve the mystery of a haunted former hospital that’s apparently eating construction workers on a regular basis.
Heavenstone Asylum was considered the height of sophistication in psychiatric circles back in the day. In the years since the facility closed, the main doctor’s legacy has been tarnished by horror stories of treatments gone wrong and disappearing patients.
The second Charlie walks into the building, she recognizes that the past is hardly buried within the walls. There are tortured souls at every turn, and it’s her job to help them.
Heavenstone’s history makes for interesting reading but the harder Charlie digs, the more horrifying the story. Somehow she needs to uncover the truth … and survive the ghosts long enough to free them.
It’s going to take everything she’s got to see things through until the end.
All Charlie wants are answers. She’s going to get them. Surviving long enough to do anything with them is another story.
It’s about to be the Legacy Foundation’s finest hour … or is it? (Amazon)

Review of Killer Cupcakes

Synopsis:

Things are going great for Lexy Baker. She’s finally opened her dream bakery, gotten rid of her cheating boyfriend and settled into her grandmother’s house with her perky dog Sprinkles at her side.

But her blissful life doesn’t last long. When her ex boyfriend is found poisoned with cupcakes from her bakery, Lexy finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation headed up by her hunky neighbor detective Jack Perillo.

With the help of a gang of iPad toting, would-be detective grandmothers, Lexy decides to take it upon herself to find the real murderer in order to clear her name and get her bakery back in business.

As things heat up on the murder trail, in the kitchen and between Lexy and the hunky detective, it’s a race against time to put the real murderer behind bars and get back to baking.

Will Lexy get her man?  (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Lexy is busy keeping her bakery up and running and enjoying her time with Sprinkles, her dog.  When her ex-boyfriend is poisoned and one of her cupcakes is the murder weapon, she definitely has a problem.  She will need the help from the grandmothers from the Brook Ridge Retirement Center, including her own, to try and solve this mystery.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning.  The mystery was well plotted and not easily solved. With the twists and turns, I could not decide who the culprit was until it was revealed at the end.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I cannot wait to read the next book to see what Lexy is involved in.

Mail Carrier Mystery, Book #6

Tonya Kappes

5 Stars

Synopsis:

USA TODAY Bestselling Author Tonya Kappes brings community, friendships, and family together in this heartwarming southern cozy mystery series.

Sugar Creek Gap is a southern small town where everyone puts their differences aside in order to come together for the greater good of the cozy knit community. But when a citizen, Jeff Faulkner, goes missing from the annual Sugar Creek Gap High School fundraiser, the rumor mill starts to turn faster and faster, churning up the past that puts Jeff Faulkner in the spotlight.

Bernadette Butler, a local mail carrier, hears all the gossip swirling around while delivering the mail on route. Hearsay says Jeff ran off because his payment for an old gambling debt came due or he ran off with another woman making both assumptions irrelevant after Rowena, Bernadette’s feline, finds Jeff’s lifeless body.

Heartbroken for Jeff’s family, Bernie knows all too well what it feels like to become a widow and a son fatherless. Bernie can’t help but collect clues with all the gossip flowing faster than she can deliver the mail, putting her smack dab in the middle of the investigation that has more twists and turns than the roads where Bernie drives her mail carrier truck.  (Goodreads)

Synopsis:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Berhis is back on her mail route, at least for the time being.  She is also very busy with her granddaughter, babysitting and spending time loving on her.  When Rowena, Bernie’s cat, finds a dead body, it is time for Bernie and Iris, her best friend, to get back on the sleuthing trail.  With the help of the Front Porch Ladies and Revonda Gail, Bernie is determined to find the killer.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and you will feel like you are right in the middle of Sugar Creek Gap, enjoying some good old southern hospitality.  The mystery was well plotted and there were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider.  There were enough twists and turns that kept me actively engaged until the end.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  Grab this book and take a trip down south.

Solving a murder might raise her spirits. But will it spring her spectral friend from Purgatory?

Mabel Gold still isn’t sure what happened. Traded by her husband for a busty bimbo the same age as their youngest daughter, the feisty sixty-something rejects the retirement community and heads west in a vintage camper. But the RV comes complete with a ghost who needs a good deed to get into Heaven, and cracking open a homicide at their first stop in Savannah could give them both a new lease on life.

Determined to dig up the dirt on the dead wheeler-dealer, Mabel and her phantom companion tackle the crime. But with two rich dudes from Dubai, a Willie Nelson lookalike mobster, and a widow nicknamed The Barracuda all on the suspect list, conjuring up the truth could take a real live miracle.

Can Mabel catch the killer before she’s the next soul crashing the Pearly Gates?

Wheeler-Dealer is the high-spirited first book in the hilarious Ghost & the Camper kooky mystery series. If you like golden-girl sleuths, zany characters, and sardonic humor, then you’ll love Rita Moreau’s witty whodunit.

Book Review: John Green's Turtles All the Way Down is a Page Turner – The Pel Mel

This was a very good debut to the series.  It has quirky characters, a good mystery and a ghost, which I love.

Mabel has been traded in for a younger model by her husband.  She has five children and a few grandchildren.  She has seen a lot, but none of that has prepared her for her next adventure.   She buys a vintage camper and decides to hit the road with her friend Lily and her husband.  They are going to take the summer and see what the United States has to offer.  They will not be alone on their journey, they will also have a ghost traveling with them.  A ghost that only Mabel can see.  And when someone gets killed, Mabel will need all the help she can get.

The characters are well developed and well rounded.  They are a quirky group of people, and at times, they are very funny.  Mabel and Lily are great friends and they have each other’s back. They will have to try and figure out what happened and who is responsible.   The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning.  The mystery was well plotted and not easily solved, which is the way I like it.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I am looking forward to see what the next adventure Mabel and Irma have.

New Releases For The Week Of May 23rd, 2021–Part 4

Broomsticks and Pink Gumdrops: A Paranormal Cozy Mystery (A Witch's Cove Mystery Book 12) by [Vella Day]

Finding a dead body in the wall of our new candy shop was strange enough, but then someone from the past returns carrying a pink ribbon I’d left on my very strange Christmas trip to Ohio.

As a founding member of The Pink Iguana Sleuths of Witch’s Cove, I thought I’d seen it all, but I was wrong. When the sheriff’s department files this as a cold case, my curiosity gets the best of me. What else is new? It also didn’t help that my talking pink iguana is insisting that I look into it.

When a corpse is fairly warm, it’s easy to come up with who wanted this person dead. Motives are everywhere, but not this time. We didn’t even know the identity of the skeleton. I shuddered to think what kind of killer hid a body in the wall of a store? A very bad one, for sure.

Regardless of how hard it will be, Jaxson, Iggy, and I are up for the challenge. I couldn’t help but wonder why an FBI agent from the past was sent to us, though. To help? Or hinder? (Amazon)

Treasure and Treason: A crazy cat thinks he's a dragon, and people keep ending up dead! (Scottish Fold Sleuth Book 2) by [Kelty Kells]

Cursed treasure, a cat who thinks he’s a dragon, and unexplained deaths—oh my!

Look, being followed around by a cat wouldn’t normally be a bad thing. Actually, I’d be pretty flattered. This cat, though, isn’t like your typical kitty. Nope. He’s absolutely convinced that he’s a dragon, and worse yet, because he thinks I have a piece of his hoard, he won’t leave me alone!

I’m talking night yowling outside my window, trying to trip me on the sidewalk, and overall just being a jerk.

Okay, so maybe he doesn’t mean it, but still! Talk about frustrating.

Worse yet, it seems this cat attracts trouble. And I mean trouble. Like the people-ending-up-dead kind of trouble–more specifically, dead in my apartment surrounded by bullet casings.

I may not be the smartest girl on the planet, but even I know this looks real bad. Now I’ve got to figure out who killed this woman and why she was killed in my home—all while avoiding the police in the process.

That’s right, folks. I’m officially on the run, thanks to this crazy kitty. Hopefully I can get out of this one alive. (Amazon)

Carried to the Grave and Other Stories (A Food Lovers’ Village Mystery Book 6) by [Leslie Budewitz]

In her Food Lovers’ Village Mysteries, Agatha Award-winning author Leslie Budewitz introduces us to Jewel Bay, a tight-knit Montana community that thrives on tourism and farm-to-table fare. Featuring Erin Murphy, beloved proprietor of the Merc—a century-old general store converted into a local foods market—each book brings us closer to the folks who call Jewel Bay home, and the cunning culprits in their midst.

In this delicious new collection of five short stories and one novella, she takes us further into the heart of Jewel Bay—from the playhouse to the Merc, from funerals to food festivals—with equal parts humor, suspense, and compassion, and no shortage of murder to spice up the menu . . .

In Carried to the Grave, a long-hidden family secret refuses to be put to rest.

Jewel Bay’s community food festival serves up the perfect opportunity for a devious killer with an appetite for murder in Pot Luck.

In The Christmas Stranger, a small gesture by a mysterious man turns out to change lives . . . and much more.

A romantic getaway to a secluded beach town in Mexico provides a deadly remedy for a couple’s trouble at home in A Death in Yelapa.

As the local playhouse opens for the season, it’s curtains for a stage manager with a secret in Put on a Dying Face.

And in An Unholy Death, when Kate and Paddy Murphy open Murphy’s Mercantile in 1910, they know making a go of it in rough-and-tumble Montana will be hard work, but for a local preacher, it’s murder.

Review of Arsenic and Adobo

Synopsis:

The first book in a new culinary cozy series full of sharp humor and delectable dishes—one that might just be killer….

When Lila Macapagal moves back home to recover from a horrible breakup, her life seems to be following all the typical rom-com tropes. She’s tasked with saving her Tita Rosie’s failing restaurant, and she has to deal with a group of matchmaking aunties who shower her with love and judgment. But when a notoriously nasty food critic (who happens to be her ex-boyfriend) drops dead moments after a confrontation with Lila, her life quickly swerves from a Nora Ephron romp to an Agatha Christie case.

With the cops treating her like she’s the one and only suspect, and the shady landlord looking to finally kick the Macapagal family out and resell the storefront, Lila’s left with no choice but to conduct her own investigation. Armed with the nosy auntie network, her barista best bud, and her trusted Dachshund, Longanisa, Lila takes on this tasty, twisted case and soon finds her own neck on the chopping block…  (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  Lila is a strong woman who has been dealt a bad hand.  When she finds out that her Tita Rosa’s restaurant is having financial difficulties, she has to go back home to try and fix things and make it right.  But that gets complicated because a nasty food critic (who happens to be her ex) drops dead at the restaurant.  Of course, she is a person of interest so she has to find the real culprit before she goes to jail for life.  She will have help from her best friend, Adeena, and her trusty Dachshund, Longansia.  And of course, her aunts and family.  With all of them in her corner, what could possibly go wrong?

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story very quickly.  The mystery was well plotted and there were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery.  I will definitely give the next book in the series a try and see what happens to Lila next.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Berkeley Publishing Group, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
