The Missing Hours by [Kavanagh, Emma]“Murderers are rarely who you imagine them to be . . . ”

One moment, Selena Cole is at the playground with her children . . . the next, she has vanished without a trace.

The body of Dominic Newell, a well-respected lawyer, is found on a remote mountain road, blood oozing from the stab wound in his neck.

In the sleepy borderland between England and Wales, sheep outnumber people and serious crimes are rare. Which makes this Tuesday morning, with two calls coming in to the local police station, even more remarkable. Detective Constable Leah Mackay and her brother, Detective Sergeant Finn Hale, begin their respective investigations, but soon find them inextricably linked. And when Selena is found alive and unhurt twenty hours later, the mystery deepens.

Selena’s work consulting on kidnap and ransom cases has brought her into close contact with ruthless criminals and international drug lords. But now, as Selena walks back into her life wearing a blood-spattered sweater, claiming no memory of the preceding hours, Leah can’t be sure if she is a victim, a liar, or a murder suspect.

Leah and Finn delve into each case, untangling the secrets and betrayals—large and small—that can lie just beneath the surface of a life, yet unprepared for where both trails will lead.

With engrossing characters, devilish twists, and evocative prose, The Missing Hours is that rare page-turner—as satisfying and complex as it is unpredictable.  (Amazon)

The Auction at Primrose Cottage (A Cornish Coastpath Mystery Book Book 4) by [Paffett, Jenifer J., Paffett, Jenifer J.]Primrose Cottage has stood on a gently sloping incline overlooking Polperro bay for almost 500 years. During that time, it has had many uses including a quarantine house, a smuggler’s hideout, and a WW2 lookout. Throughout most of its existence, it has been owned by the Trenowen family, and the current owner aims to keep it that way.

Recently though, due to lack of funds, Mrs Kathleen Trenowen has had to put up for auction, a rather important painting of hers. The painting is of the cottage itself, and many think that it’s not even a particularly good painting. It is, nevertheless influential, as it is one of the earliest examples of a Cornish landscape painting, and as such is quite collectible.

However, shortly after the painting was sold at auction, it mysteriously disappeared, stolen from her cottage. At first, suspicion fell on Mrs Trenowen herself, but the investigation proved that the painting was not insured and that she would subsequently not gain from its theft.

Entrance stage left, Pippa Welbury and her lovable scruffy mongrel Benjamin. Pippa is intrigued by the story and having seen how the whole episode had upset Mrs Trenowen, she takes it upon herself to do some investigating.

Against the backdrop of art dealers and the Cornish countryside, can Pippa uncover what happened to ‘The Primrose Cottage’?  (Amazon)

Murder in an Irish Churchyard (An Irish Village Mystery) by [O'Connor, Carlene]The village of Kilbane in County Cork, Ireland, has a new garda—and her first case is a grave matter indeed . . .

It’s official! Siobhán is now Garda O’Sullivan, and her five siblings couldn’t be prouder. While brother James runs Naomi’s Bistro, Siobhán is doing her part to keep the village safe. Of course, Kilbane is pretty quiet compared to a place like Dublin, where Macdara Flannery has gone to be a detective sergeant.

Then one night the local priest summons Siobhán to the church cemetery. There’s a dead man in the graveyard—aboveground. He lies shot on a blanket of freshly fallen snow, hand stretched out toward a nearby headstone. He’s a stranger, but the priest has heard talk of an American tourist in town, searching for his Irish ancestor.

A detective sergeant is dispatched from Dublin to assist with the case, and as fate would have it, it’s Macdara. After his parting, things are awkward between them, but they have to work together. They learn the victim was from Dublin—Dublin, Ohio, that is. And when his family members are located and told of his murder, the plot thickens. Siobhán begins to dig for a motive among the gnarled roots of the family tree. But as long-buried secrets are unearthed, she and Macdara will need to stay two steps ahead of the killer or end up with more than one foot in the grave.  (Amazon)

Nestled in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, the ‘town’ isn’t much — a dozen or less buildings in various stages of disrepair—but it comes with a dedicated pair of caretakers, a menagerie of farm animals, a surprisingly generous trust fund, enough stipulations to make her head spin, and a handsome but maddening attorney to oversee the handling of the estate.

Pawprints and Predicaments

Lucky Paws Petsitting Mystery, Book #3

Bethany Blake

5 Stars

35385156Synopsis:

The Tail Waggin’ Winterfest is the highlight of the season in the famously pet-friendly Pocono Mountains town of Sylvan Creek. But despite attractions like an ice sculpture display, a dogsled race, and gourmet hot chocolate, Daphne Templeton finds herself annoyed by TV producer Lauren Savidge, who’s filming the festivities. She’s critical, controlling, and as chilly as the January air. Daphne would like to tell her to go jump in a lake–and as a matter of fact, that’s exactly what they’re both going to do . . .

It’s the first-ever polar bear plunge in Lake Wallapawakee, and Daphne and Lauren are among the eighty or so people who charge into the frigid water to raise funds for animals in need. Daphne makes it back to shore–with the help of a mysterious St. Bernard–but Lauren is dragged out stone cold dead. Now, with her trusty basset hound Socrates at her side, Daphne intends to assist Detective Jonathan Black in his investigation–whether he wants her to or not . . .

Includes recipes for homemade pet treats!

“Doggone charming from start to finish!” –Cleo Coyle, New   (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed.  I thought all of the characters are engaging and I enjoyed spending time with them.  I really like how Daphne and Moxie are such good friends and they compliment each other well.  Her sister, Piper, and her mom sometimes give Daphne a hard time, but you can tell how much they love her.  And Detective Jonathan Black continues to be the bane of her existence but I think she would date him if the opportunity ever presented itself.

I still continue to think that all of the animals steal the show.  They all have very distinct personalities and we get to meet a new pet named Sebastian, the cheese loving rodent.  I loved the way Daphne was always talking to them and asking their opinions.  Socrates, her basset hound had me laughing out loud.  The animals are as real to me as any of the humans.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The authors is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book I felt like I was visiting Sylvan Creek, watching the celebration first hand.  The mystery is well plotted and fast paced.  There were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through and the mystery was not easy to solve.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted animal cozy mystery. I am already looking forward to reading the next book in the series, I hope the author is a fast writer.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.  I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books for the opportunity to read and review this great book.

35498660Synopsis:

Getting used to life back home in Deer Park, North Carolina, Sydney McCall and her right-hand tabby, Toby, are helping her sister Kat run the local animal shelter. Syd and Kat are all excited about the prospect of the shelter’s newest fundraiser: shopping channel queen Ulla Townsend. Shelter admin Maggie Shayne vehemently refuses to have anything to do with the woman, but the fundraiser ensues as planned. That is, until Ulla turns up dead in the middle of the event.

The cause of death is determined to be an allergic reaction, but Syd and Toby are sniffing out something fishy. When Syd met Ulla, it was clear she was distasteful and rude. And right before the event, Syd spotted some behind-the-scenes drama between Ulla and her manager. As they begin to investigate, they realize there is no shortage of suspects, and Maggie is at the top of the list.

Now Syd and Toby must claw their way to the truth before everything goes paws up at their animal shelter in Death by a Whisker by national bestselling author T. C. LoTempio. (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well developed and well rounded.  Sydney is a likable, hard working woman.  She gets along well with her sister, Kat, and all of the other workers at the animal shelter.  Her roommate Leila is an investigative reporter and they make a good team when it comes to sleuthing.   And that is exactly what they will have to do when another dead body turns up.  Toby, her rescue cat, is also very helpful when it comes to solving crimes.  All of the characters and secondary characters were engaging and I was happy to be able to visit with them again.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.  The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I felt like I was right there, involved in the story personally.  The community that she has created, Deer Park, North Carolina, is a place I would definitely like to visit.

The mystery was well plotted and moved along at a nice pace.  There were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through, and enough twists and turns that it was not an easy mystery to solve.

I would recommend this well crafted cozy mystery to anyone who likes animals with their mysteries.  The characters are great, the setting is great, the mystery is great and the book is great.  I am already looking forward to the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in the hopes of receiving a honest review.  I would like to thank NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the opportunity to read and review this great book.

T.C. LoTempioBorn in New York City, T. C. LoTempio is the national bestselling author of Meow If It’s Murder, the first in the Nick and Nora Mystery series.

She has been a staff reporter at the young adult magazine Susabella Passengers and Friends for more than a decade.

While Toni LoTempio does not commit – or solve – murders in real life, she has no trouble doing it on paper.

Her lifelong love of mysteries began early on when she was introduced to her first Nancy Drew mystery at age 10 – The Secret in the Old Attic. She lists among her favorite mystery/suspense writers Erle Stanley Gardner, Mary Higgins Clark and James Patterson, as well as EJ Copperman, Steve Hockensmith, Victoria Laurie, Ali Brandon, Rita Mae Brown, Miranda James and Sofie Kelly to name only a few!

Toni is also passionate about her love for animals, as demonstrated with her four cats: Trixie, Princess, Maxx and, of course, ROCCO, who not only provided the inspiration for the character of Nick the cat in the Nick and Nora mystery series, but who also writes his own blog and does charity work for Nathan Fillion’s charity, Kids Need to Read!

Toni’s also devoted to miniseries like The Thorn Birds, Dancing with the Stars, reruns of Murder She Wrote and Castle (of course!).

She (and ROCCO, albeit he’s uncredited) pen the Nick and Nora mystery series from Berkley Prime Crime.

Review of Killer Cravings

36667340

Synopsis:

Bringing up baby–Bringing down a killer An over the top, good-time cozy mystery While staking out a cheating husband, Kate can’t help but to indulge the cravings from her newest pregnancy. Little does she know the owner of the bakery has her eyes on Jim, Kate’s beloved husband. Things turn deadly as Kate’s cravings take over. It’s up to Kate to keep her Family Life on track while solving another deadly whodunit! (Goodreads)

Review:

Kate is a great character and I enjoyed getting to know her.  She has a lot on her plate: a 6 month old daughter, a husband, training to become a PI and she is pregnant again.  That is a lot for anyone to handle and keep their sanity.  And between pregnancy brain and her cravings, Kate is barely hanging on to hers.  Some of Kate’s thoughts and actions were very funny and realistic.  I also enjoyed getting to know her husband Jim, you could tell how much he loved Kate. All of the secondary characters added a lot to the story and I felt that they all combined to make a great cast of characters.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book I felt like I was right there, sitting in on stake outs and watching all of the action taking place.  The mystery was carried on well throughout the book and there were enough twists and turns to keep it interesting and difficult to solve.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted humorous cozy.  This is the sixth book in the series and I did not feel lost at all, I felt like I knew what was going on.

Death of an Honest Man (A Hamish Macbeth Mystery) by [Beaton, M. C.]Sergeant Hamish Macbeth–Scotland’s most quick-witted but unambitious policeman–returns in M.C. Beaton’s new mystery in her New York Times bestselling series.

Nobody loves an honest man, or that was what police sergeant Hamish Macbeth tried to tell newcomer Paul English. Paul had moved to a house in Cnothan, a sour village on Hamish’s beat.

He attended church in Lochdubh. He told the minister, Mr. Wellington, that his sermons were boring. He told tweedy Mrs. Wellington that she was too fat and in these days of increasing obesity it was her duty to show a good example. Angela Brody was told her detective stories were pap for the masses and it was time she wrote literature instead. He accused Hamish of having dyed his fiery red hair. He told Jessie Currie–who repeated all the last words of her twin sister–that she needed psychiatric help.

“I speak as I find,” he bragged. Voices saying, “I could kill that man,” could be heard from Lochdubh to Cnothan.

And someone did.

Now Hamish is faced with a bewildering array of suspects. And he’s lost the services of his clumsy policeman, Charlie, who has resigned from the force after Chief Inspector Blair berated Charlie one too many times, and the policeman threw Blair into the loch. Can Hamish find the killer on his own?  (Amazon)

With her B&B now adjacent to a crime scene, it looks as if Piper’s dream of reviving the business might be done for. Between the haunted house vibe of the ancient Victorian property and the creepy antics of Mrs. Harris, the crazy old lady living in the attic, can things get any worse?

Propelled into the middle of the dangerous murder investigation, Piper soon makes it her mission to clear away the clouds of suspicion surrounding her B&B and shine the light of day on long-held secrets that some of the island’s inhabitants would rather keep buried.  But the killer is only one step behind her, and if Piper doesn’t think fast, the only thing she’ll be getting to the bottom of is a shallow grave.

And rob it.

As Lacey waits for Baby Luzzi to make his or her appearance, she’s decided to cool her jets on the whole “chasing criminals” lifestyle at her husband’s insistence. Caught in the middle of a bank heist, Lacey’s priceless wedding ring is now in the hands of three ladies known to the media as the Femme Fatale. The thieves might have gotten away with three heists across the Twin Cities to date, but one hitch they didn’t count on was a pregnant lady scorned. Lacey Luzzi’s hormones are on the fritz, her sugar habits are out of control, and her tears are flowing freely. This time, the robbers picked on the wrong gal.

With a due date approaching rapidly, Lacey and Meg are bound and determined to recover Lacey’s ring and put this case behind them…before she’s delivering more than guilty criminals on the job.

Lacey Luzzi: Sugared is a full-length, humorous cozy mystery with a strong female protagonist in the spirit of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum, albeit one working for the wrong side of the law…

Note: This book can be read as a standalone, though it is part of a larger series and not all plot lines are resolved in a single book. It is rated a strong PG-13 for sarcasm and mild language. No graphic gore or sex.  (Amazon)
