New Releases For The Week Of June 3rd, 2018–Part 3

Here is a list of some of the new releases for the week of June 3rd, 2018.  I am going to divide the list into 3 days because there are so many of them this week. Today is the third and final day of my list for this week.  Hope you find some selections for your weekly reading. Enjoy and happy reading.

London Rules (Slough House) by [Herron, Mick]Ian Fleming. John le Carré. Len Deighton. Mick Herron. The brilliant plotting of Herron’s twice CWA Dagger Award-winning Slough House series of spy novels is matched only by his storytelling gift and an ear for viciously funny political satire.

“Mick Herron is the John le Carré of our generation.” —Val McDermid

At MI5 headquarters Regent’s Park, First Desk Claude Whelan is learning this the hard way. Tasked with protecting a beleaguered prime minister, he’s facing attack from all directions: from the showboating MP who orchestrated the Brexit vote, and now has his sights set on Number Ten; from the showboat’s wife, a tabloid columnist, who’s crucifying Whelan in print; from the PM’s favorite Muslim, who’s about to be elected mayor of the West Midlands, despite the dark secret he’s hiding; and especially from his own deputy, Lady Di Taverner, who’s alert for Claude’s every stumble. Meanwhile, the country’s being rocked by an apparently random string of terror attacks.

Over at Slough House, the MI5 satellite office for outcast and demoted spies, the agents are struggling with personal problems: repressed grief, various addictions, retail paralysis, and the nagging suspicion that their newest colleague is a psychopath. Plus someone is trying to kill Roddy Ho. But collectively, they’re about to rediscover their greatest strength—that of making a bad situation much, much worse.

It’s a good thing Jackson Lamb knows the rules. Because those things aren’t going to break themselves.  (Amazon)

Never Say Pie (Lexy Baker Cozy Mystery Series Book 14) by [Dobbs, Leighann]When the president of the Brook Ridge Falls Senior Center Book Club is found dead, facedown in one of the pies meant for the club’s pie-eating contest, Lexy and her posse of iPad-toting grandmothers take it upon themselves to find the killer. Too bad the only potential clue might be buried inside one of the many pies taken by the police for evidence.

That’s no problem. Lexy, Nans, and the ladies will use their uncanny methods of deduction to ferret out the killer. They waste no time filling their suspect list.

Was it the crusty old author?
The flaky antiques dealer?
The cheating husband with his half-baked grief act?

They all had means, motive, and opportunity and seem to be harboring secrets. But what has Lexy really worried is that someone in her group seems to have a secret of her own.

Just when the case seems impossible to solve, they come across another clue. Will Lexy and her posse realize its hidden meaning before it’s too late?  (Amazon)

Murder of a Silent Man (DCI Cook Thriller Series Book 8) by [Strang, Phillip]A murdered recluse. A property empire. A disinherited family. All the ingredients for murder.

No one gave much credence to the man when he was alive. In fact, most people never knew who he was, although those who had lived in the area for many years recognised the tired-looking and shabbily-dressed man as he shuffled along, regular as clockwork on Thursday’s at seven in the evening to the local off-licence.

It was always the same: a bottle of whisky, premium brand, and a packet of cigarettes. He paid his money over the counter, took hold of his plastic bag containing his purchases, and then walked back down the road with the same rhythmic shuffle. He said not one word to anyone on the street or in the shop.

Apart from the three-storey mansion where he lived, one of the best residences on one of the best streets in London, with its windows permanently shuttered, no one would have regarded him as any other than homeless and destitute. Just a harmless eccentric, until the morning when he was found dead in his front garden.  (Amazon)

Ice Blonde (Angela Richman, Death Investigator Book 3) by [Viets, Elaine]The last thing Chouteau County death investigator Angela Richman wants to do during the holidays is her job. So it’s with some trepidation that she agrees to help the desperate Mr. and Mrs. LaRouche when they show up on her doorstep.

Their daughter Juliet is missing. She was last seen leaving a high school party just before midnight, and they’d like Angela’s help getting their trusted local detectives involved. The officer assigned to the case—Chouteau newcomer Det. Jace Budewitz—is far too blunt and impolite for their liking. And with the weather murderously cold, they can’t bear the thought that their little princess is in the harsh winter wilderness.

Discreetly investigating Juliet’s disappearance, Angela finds herself struggling to break through the silence from the rich teenagers who knew Juliet and their infuriatingly detached parents. She also discovers that their vicious bias against the local working class has cast a shadow over the case.

The more she digs, the less Angela can comprehend the lengths the one percent will go to protect their own. Angela must work quickly as she searches for answers with the acute awareness that Juliet LaRouche edges closer to becoming just a memory… (Amazon)

Detectives' Honeymoon (the Calendar Mysteries) by [Kincaid, Juliet]After resolving the mysteries of MISCHIEF IN MARCH, the third novel in the Calendar Mystery series, the newly wedded Daniel and Minty Price set off on their honeymoon. But they miss the boat to St. Louis, so they hurry to the little cottage they’ve rented in Kansas City in 1900. And there they discover a most shocking surprise. A Harvey Girl and a would-be Sherlock Holmes interfere with their honeymoon plans and soon exactly where the detectives will honeymoon is thrown into doubt, if they have a honeymoon at all. “Detectives’ Honeymoon” picks up the story of Minty Wilcox and Daniel Price in old Kansas City, a place that could get downright deadly a hundred years or so ago, exactly where MISCHIEF IN MARCH leaves off.

Praise for JANUARY JINX
Book 1 of the Calendar Mystery Series
By Juliet Kincaid
The delightful, creative, and charming January Jinx introduces a terrific character in Minty Wilcox, a good old-fashioned cozy mystery persona who will surely be able to carry the planned-for series. It’s Minty who drives the readable narrative, and author Juliet Kincaid keeps the pace steady and fast at the same time for quite a readable experience. The writing is appropriate for the historical setting without ever being gimmicky or archaic . . . The unique setting of 1899 Kansas City is full of flavor that never overwhelms the story and the characters. With a terrific, original, but still comfortable series concept, there are certainly big things afoot for Juliet Kincaid and Minty Wilcox’s Calendar Mysteries.  (Amazon)
